I don't know how to feel that Nintendo basically announced their new hardware in a 3 minute online video. I think I like its...directness with no fussing about with grandiose staged events

I assume they'll have more to share later

The unification is the biggest thing for me. One machine for everything Nintendo outputs. No wasted development on separate Mario karts for home and handheld. I hope they have the option to buy just the handheld because if I buy more than one for my kids then I don't need multiple docks etc

Not sure if it was mentioned here, but it seems that Nintendo might be targeting an older more hardcore demographic with Switch judging by the trailer, which they haven't done for at least a decade now.

That means they're competitive with Sony and MS in their market, which is awesome.

Isn't this thing even less powerful than an Xbone?

Given the portability, it's probably going to be more expensive than an OG Xbone or PS4, so I'm struggling to see how it will grab that market.

As someone who absolutely hated the wiiu and that got so burned by it that thought I would never purchase another Nintendo console this looks amazing and really has me pumping.

I will surely wait to see how the support goes this time, but if Nintendo plays their cards right (price and support) they can make a killing.

I wonder if games are allowed to support only tablet mode, could be very big for some pc only games like LOL or wow.

Anyone notice them sliding the screen into a holder that attaches to the headrest in the car?

Seems like an official type of holder for the Switch.

Also there seems to possibly be hidden bumpers of some sort on the inside of the detachable controllers.

Only thing worse than the name is the design of that control interface.

Seriously, what were they thinking going with that rather than sticking with the Wii U layout?

I'm still interested, but I'm not happy about some of the decisions made with the design.

Bummer that everything had been leaked already. I'm more of a home console guy, so I'm not that happy with a hybrid, but I think business wise it's a great concept if they go all in. Until now buying a mobile game has always been a compromise but not anymore.

Considering how it's been trending all day in the news they smashed it

It's all about social media now

Long boring ass conferences are gone now, a three minute video accomplished what a 2hour conference did

current gen multis will be hard to be made in a portable ARM based console.People must realize Nintendo is taking its own path each gen with more strength. And is a path nearer to Apple than to Sony/MS.

Yup. When they said they were holding back the unveiling because they didn't want their competitors to copy them, they were thinking more about inexpensive tablet makers like JXD, GPD, Amazon, etc. than they were Sony and Microsoft.

If they'd unveiled any earlier the web would be drowning in cheap Chinese 7" tablets with slide-on game controls and pre-installed emulators this Christmas.

I hope that this is successful & shakes up the industry a bit. It's already getting redundant & dull with too much focus on power, graphics, shooters, cinematics within games, etc. from Microsoft, Sony & most Western 3rd party publishers & with Microsoft & Sony trying to be more like PC gaming.

At least be successful within Japanese 3rd party publishers.

It's insane to me that people are still managing to be negative about what is literally Wii/DS 2.0. It's going to print money regardless if you think hybrid is a bad idea or not. This is the natural evolution in gaming. Home gaming will be primarily PC/VR, handheld will be Switch.
Why is it the Wii/DS2? This is the game system that your mom, grandpa and little sister are bugging you to buy? I see the analogy from a hardware standpoint, but not from a market one. You really can't say this will print money, yet.

The mini wiimotes are too damn small. The analog stick and buttons are too close together for holding sideways play and it just doesn't look as comfortable to play like that as the wiimote was. I'm sorry but they either need to be bigger or it's a worthless feature that will be too uncomfortable to use.

I myself am excited about the Switch. But for crying out loud, the way you match overly negative hot takes is not to respond with overly positive hot takes based on very little. I can see this potentially catching on. However, given all the volatility in both the home and mobile gaming marketplaces, it's incredibly naive to proclaim that this is the obvious future of gaming. I think this device accomplishes what it wants in a much slicker way than most other devices. But I really don't think it's unfair to suggest that it's not doing anything particularly groundbreaking.

Good observation.

This has probably been said a bunch of times, but the battery life on that screen(likely displaying an HD image)is going to blow chunks, right?

Not necessarily. Most scalable multiplatform video game engines are and have been made with ARM in mind.

Been wanting a dedicated gaming tablet for ages (I wished Sony would have released a tablet sized vita). Also, noticed that there is what seems to be a fan exhaust at the top. I'm guessing the fan won't be on when detached from dock, but when it plugs in the system is upclocked and the fan turns on to get a performance boost.

This'll be a fun post to quote in a few years I bet.

I just had to try it by inverting my 3DS lol
Cable just gets in the way because of that and you need to put it behind the console and it goes along the bottom anyway.

It's not a dealbreaker, but still a small annoyance that I'd rather not have to deal with.

To each their own though.

Have you tried to play with a handheld laying back on a couch or in bed? That's my small annoyance. Unless your arms never get tired enough to hold it up the whole time, you usually have it resting on you. That means the headphone jack on the bottom is pressing against you. I've had some cords ruined this way. Also the kickstand thing for the Switch wouldn't work if the headphone jack was on the bottom.

Yeah, feel the same way.

I don't know.

It's crazy how Nintendo gave up the only field where they were still somehow strong and double dipping on that WiiU concept, which make me think that Nintendo and Iwata never tried to do something new but were still following the WiiU philosophy with the Switch.

Right now it's a WiiU which you are able to leave the room now.

Nintendo probably realized the market for dedicated handheld system is shrinking and they couldn't possibly compete with Sony and MS in term of the raw horsepower, hence the Switch is the only route Nintendo has left.

I'm curious how Japanese 3DS owners will response to this. I can't imagine anyone playing that huge tablet on the train like they did with the 3DS.

I don't disagree with you, but who's to say that won't happen? Maybe not on a large scale from a brand like Amazon, but those cheap Chinese knockoffs seem to come out of nowhere very quickly.

Edit: Sorry, was thinking Christmas 2017, not 2016. Oops.

There's nothing that would make someone choose a PS4/XB over Nintendo anymore. Enough of the same third party games on Switch.. the ability to undock and play on the go is much more compelling than 4K content 95% of the population can't even properly enjoy.

This thing has serious fad potential. Imagine Switch meet ups similar to the Pokémon GO phenomenon. Very doable now. Multiplayer has been all but forgotten by Sony and MS, Nintendo is bringing multiplayer out of the home. It will be a huge conversation starter, and if prices right I believe it will really take off. Zelda and Splatoon as possible launch titles will be huge.

Especially once Smash and Pokémon are released.

And that'd hurt Nintendo because...?

I dont see the appeal of the gimmick at all. I had a dream last night about an "Ultra Nintendo Entertainment System" more powerful than the Pro and Xbox S. That woulda been cool. If I'm playing triple AAA games outside the house, I'm on my laptop

Yeah, who remembers the Wü?

Edit: Maybe it wasn't the Wü; I can't remember what it was called, but there was something just like the Wii that came outta China right around Wii launch.

I actually think Microsoft would/could be in a position to offer something like this nowadays. With Windows 10, Play Anywhere and the Surface they could easily make a play for this.

I don't think they will unless this is a DS/Wii level phenomenon though.

I think the execution of the idea is pretty well done..but I'm just not interested in a hybrid console at all. IMO it's a waste of money put into a overcomplicated platform, money that I'd much rather Nintendo have used for a higher end GPU inside.

It sucks cause I'm always interested in Nintendo 1st party stuff and have to just go along with whatever the current gimmick is that I don't care about. I think I'm gonna have to pass on this unless it's very competitively priced.

So no touch controls unless you're in portable mode...? That seems limiting.

Has there been any discussion on how closely the final product will look to the prototype(?) in the video?

Looks cheap and plastic-y, really the only aspect I'm not thrilled about.

The removable controllers seems unnecessary to me. How many people are really going to play on an airplane tray table or with friends with half a controller that justifies the extra cost and complexity? If you do that a lot you can just buy a separate controller
