You don't think the placement of the controls is an obvious mistake?

Having to buy a pro controller to play 2D games is just wrong when everybody else gets it right. Ergonomics is a big deal for something you are meant to pick up and hold in your hands.

And yes Nintendo fans will say "the 3DS was perfect!!!", but that isn't the point. Nintendo gets those fans by default, it is other gamers they are appearing to be trying to court, so the design is a bit of a disaster in my opinion.

I kind of feel like I need to hold the thing myself before I judge the controls. My initial reaction is that it's less than ideal, but I'm willing to consider that it might be a worthwhile tradeoff for the ability to do two-player gaming on the tablet screen. Or it may suck. I don't know yet.

I think that this thing is already starting to deflating in me.

After seeing the trailer I was hyped AF, but once the heat starts to get down and I can read more information than the few things they wanted to show us in the trailer, It has started to look like another Wii U, good only for Nintendo games.

And the most worrying part is that we don't know the real specs yet...

Pretty much every Nintendo console is only good for Nintendo games

My thread was closed so I'm posting this here:

Now that Nintendo has confirmed the Switch for a March 2017 release, do you expect the Wii U to become scarce (if they've already stopped production) and therefore increase in price? Unless I missed it, the reveal didn't show an optical disc so the console is probably not backward compatible. I guess I'm wondering whether this is the right time to buy a Wii U to catch up on its library. Your thoughts, GAF?

The buttons replacing the dpad means you NEED a pro controller for fighting games. So another Wii U situation for fighters is basically garaunteed. Playing 2D games, especially fighters, with the Switch on the go is going to be garbage.

No, because no one wants the Wii U. It's pretty awful hardware and the best games seem to be coming for the Switch.

Can't say I'm too hyped. I already have a new 3ds and a Wii U. It's not like I would experience something new. I just see another machine to play Nintendo games on that isn't much different from what I already have.

The portable aspect is neat. The stick placement is bad. Not interested in playing 2 players on a small screen with micro controllers.

Edit: No dpad is just awful.

THE Nintendo Switch will get 3rd party support if.
1. It has a large enough install base and
2. Its easy enough to do a low effort port.

So far number 2 is looking very possible. While questions about install base are unknown but sound promising with many Gaffers who didnt buy a Wii U having a positive view of the switch (at this stage)

The wiiu looked like a kids toy. The switch looks much more mature. Big improvement.

About 7 thumbs wide, and 4 thumbs tall.

Did you make this picture? This is really good

Because the clicking sound and feel of two plastic pieces sliding in to fit with each other is a pretty typical "oddly satisfying" experience? Similar to the experience of pulling the protective plastic coating off a screen. What an odd, lighthearted thing to get hung up on.

wasn't getting hung up on it, just legitimately wondered how you came to that conclusion

Nobody wants to hear this right now, but it will never get the third party support that PS4 and XB1 have. There won't be many cross-platform releases.

It's pretty telling that they showed Skyrim, a last-gen port, rather than a game exclusive to this generation.

But the hype train does not tolerate rational thought and critical thinking.
But I want Mass Effect and not have to buy a second console for all my gaming needs :(

I expected this but each gen I pray for a miracle that Nintendo gets its third party support back

Wouldn't surprise me one bit if it's proprietary wank, like with the 3DS where one isn't even included in the package.
I could see them doing that if they're keeping the 3ds charging port, which would be a pain, but not if they're making a new one for this system.

If they'd just go with micro usb then I'd not care one bit even since almost everyone has a couple of those cables laying around.

As someone who stopped using consoles somewhere halfway through last generation I have to say Nintendo does have my attention with this.

Kinda shocked actually how this whole machine looks and was shown off in the trailer. Doesn't even look like a Nintendo product on first sight. Really curious how well this all works out in reality.

not having hardware on which 3rd party devs can run their games is a very obvious, but also typical nintendo mistake that in the end costs them more than they want to admit

Maybe, but I do also understand that there's a point where you just kind of have to realize that it's kind of a lost cause trying to pretend that Nintendo hardware will be a good home to the types of AAA games you're asking for that already have perfectly fine homes on PS/Xbox/PC. Would it be better if there was less of a performance gap to make the platform more inviting? Yeah. But what are they going to do here? Release an expensive tablet that scares off mainstream audiences even more? Focus on making a powerful console box?

Given that the Wii U wasn't truly portable, I don't think sacrificing power for gimmicks was the right call. But seeing as how they wanted to go truly hybrid here, I don't know what the alternative is.

I think wait for black friday, after that do not see a better time to get a deal on a new Wiiu .

Lol Ethernet port... They didn't have that in neither the Wii or Wii U. I had to buy a USB Ethernet POS to get better Smash Bro online pings. I doubt they'll have it in this either.

I know that, but I mentioned the adapter in my post.

To be fair most people want less wires, and most people don't care about having the best pings. Yeah maybe hardcore gamer who plays cod and then buys some KontrolFreek attachments too and sits camping in a corner because of his k/d lol.

I think there's a reason Nintendo have not deemed having ethernet on every console essential.

And while I've recognized that they've not had ethernet ports in their last few consoles, who knows whether it's in the dock or not. Hence why I said "might be" one in the dock.

I just realized Nintendo killed the d-pad unless you have the Pro controller. I still think it's critical to bundle the controller for 3rd party success. Hopefully it's not separate.

This concept was the first thing I thought of when I saw the system. Really close. Well done to whoever made it, I was hoping the system would look something like this.

This is the first time I can recall seeing a fanmade mock up, thinking "I hope it turns out looking like that," and then having my desire come true.

If the Switch becomes a mainstream success the third parties will come, it's as easy as that.
Even the Wii got all of the Call of Duty's that came out during it's lifetime.

If Nintendo wanted to compete with ps4box one on power they'd have to be a lot more powerful than the competition for it to make any sense and thus have to price themselves way too high for the mainstream.
I'm incredibly excited about the Switch, haven't been this hyped for a Nintendo console since the SNES :)

What if you can attach one with a real dpad on the left?

For what games are you using the dpad? Fight games and VC?

I'm curious what their stance on this is as far as being the successor to the 3ds. I mean at face value this is a handheld with dockable TV output.

I assume this is the replacement to both the 3ds and the wiiu at this point?

Not this time

Enjoy the crow.

God, I am a huge kid at heart and I want the best for Nintendo. I've owned all their systems. But I just can't see this going much better for them than Wii U did. I certainly don't see a Wii craze in the cards.

They are up against two juggernauts with the PS4 and XB1. They have massive leads, huge libraries and tons of support coming with lots of hype for future titles. They have hardware refreshes that will only further the massive power gap between PS4/XB1 and the Switch. The standard version of their consoles will be price competitive. VR is a thing that is just beginning to take form in the market and is offering something truly new and exciting.

What is the Switch really offering me as an average Joe that would compell me to pick it up in addition to or instead of a PS4 or XB1? Nintendo games? If I wanted those I would have bought a Wii U or 3DS. And the new Zelda is on Wii U so the Switch's biggest killer app isn't even exclusive.

Ok, Skyrim and NBA so far is somewhat of an evidence that this machine will have third-party support.

At least this won't seem to be a casual focused bullshit like Wii U originally was.

Ok, I'll be watching this.

People complaining about power do you think Nintendo would be successful going for PS4 level power with Nintendo games. Then Nintendo need to also think about making another handheld which would once again split their teams with exclusive games across 2 devices. Yes maybe more multiplatform games would be able to get ported but would that make a difference. Gamecube got quite a few ports and it didn't do much. As the audience that okays these multiplatform games have already bought a PS4 or XB1 or planning to buy a Slim or 1S for a cheap price with bigger libraries.

Best thing for Nintendo was to go hybrid so they can combine their teams and put major support towards their system while getting some of that Japanese handheld 3 party devs on board.

Unfortunately Nintendo put themselves in a bad situation after N64, GC, after Wii lost its luster, and Wii U failing. This is the only idea that I think has even a slight chance to make them successful. U just hope they have decent amount of software and a good price for the system.

I wonder how Sony and MS are gonna copy this thing if it proves to be successful, or at least gets the hype You just know they are already working on it. Just look at how they copied the Wii. Nintendo was admonished by not showing this at E3 this year but it turned out to be a smart move. They will essential have the market for two years if this proves to be more successful than the Wii U because the other two are already set on thier own courses.

I'm interested. The name seems a bit plain to me but eh what can I do about it. The big surprise from the reveal is that it seems the target audience for this is young adults. Seems a bit different from the Wii/Wii U family approach.

When it comes to third party I'm curious to see how far EA wants to go with NS. They are on the list but if the relationship was strong enough they surely would have shown FIFA in the reveal trailer, right? As much as we like to think EA = Mass Effect, EA is pretty much the FIFA publisher. That could have persuaded a bunch of people right there, even though in the end Nintendo needs to offer the online structure to support a huge fan base and who knows if they are even interested in doing that.

If the Switch becomes a mainstream success the third parties will come, it's as easy as that.
Even the Wii got all of the Call of Duty's that came out during it's lifetime.

It was missing a lot of software. Which I think is kind of the point here just in terms of establishing that Nintendo may just not be best served trying to go out of their way to court third parties. That's not me being a spiteful Nintendo fan and saying "good riddance." Ideally, they'd have better support, and if it's feasible I'd advise doing so. But I just mean that the Gamecube had adequate power but lacked some notable third party releases. The Wii had plenty of commercial success and lacked many notable third party releases. The Wii U lost support even before the full move to PS4/Xbox One.

Again, I'm not saying that they flip Western third parties the bird because they're a special snowflake that doesn't need them. But I just don't know how much it behooves them to try and make more standard hardware in the hopes that third parties will release software on their platform that sells well.

.

I could totally get your point of view until you went and mentioned VR.

VR in it's current form is a fad. It's certainly not going to take the world by storm either.

Any sales performance talk at this stage is pointless, I remember people saying the Wii was dead. Don't you remember the Wii reveal on here?

Time will tell how the Switch does. I don't think it's going to get my family interested the way they were to play bowling and tennis, infact I'd say it's a safe bet that the mainstream won't care as much, but I can see it doing better than the Wii U.

I'm shocked people predict worse sales than the Wii U infact.

I just realized Nintendo killed the d-pad unless you have the Pro controller. I still think it's critical to bundle the controller for 3rd party success. Hopefully it's not separate.

No it isn't. No it isn't! The system has a traditional controller layout as it is. This is the most normal control scheme Nintendo has ever had since the SNES. It has 4 shoulder buttons, two analog sticks, a D-Pad, and 4 face buttons, plus a home button, and a share button. It's exactly the same as every other system now.

You honestly think that because they broke the D-Pad it's gonna make 3rd parties bail? That broken D-Pad really fucks with Sony's 3rd party support doesn't it.

The only thing drawing me in is the use of a normal controller and the games.

Everything about the hardware is uninteresting to me, the tablet will stay docked 100% of the time so I'm paying for a screen for nothing, I'll never use any of the clicking features and the default controller is unfortunate looking so I'll have to buy a pro controller.

So yeah that stuff bums me out, but at least we finally have a console with no forced gimmick wand or tablet controller. I guess that's me being in.

i love portable nintendo gaming for those odd titles, but no way in hell am i paying console price for a portable.. :(

see you in like 5 years maybe.
