billbil-kun - PS5 Pro: design leak, size close to slim, announcement window in firstr half of Spetember

is there anyway Sony only sells the Pro and phases out the normal PS5 (after temporary discounts to get rid of supply)?

By all indications this may be just as cheap, or nearly so, to make as base PS5

Still don't understand a need for this.....have we seen that many PS5 games that push the current hardware to it's limits? I don't think we have. Will there be some benefit to having a Pro to making current PS5 games run or play better? I was all in on getting a PS4 Pro after having a PS4 and looking back, i can't really see the benefit of me doing so back in the day other than just saying i had the "latest and greatest"
Tons of games underperform or do not hit a stable 60fps on PS5, and have significant cutbacks to visual features when compared to PC. There's a huge need for this. I don't understand the "I don't understand the need for this" rhetoric AT ALL. There are literally dozens of examples of poorly performing performance mode games on PS5.

I'm pretty in tune with all of that, and i don't notice it that often. They're going to have a hard sell on this if that is the route that they are going to go when pushing the need for it.

Nah...this is going to be at least 650€ in Europe. Sony would never kill their generation by having the only console at this price. USA is cool but prices are through the roof already. Imagine only a Pro in stores.

I'm no marketing genius, but I'm pretty sure they will just market it as a higher-end PS5 with proper RT support and AI upscaling, allowing for better visuals, higher fidelity, and / or better performance. And it will sell. We'll see, though. I will buy one, but I am in the enthusiast / early-adopter crowd. Either way, with the success of the PS4P and the current market position of the PS5, I do not see it flopping.

All the Unreal Engine 5 need this. Like the latest example Black Myth. Another example using other engine is Star Wars Outlaws. Look at the resolutions below. 30fps is not even 4k an 60fps 720p to 1080p. So yes.
- Graphics:
- 60 fps Performance: DRS 720p to 1080p
- 40 fps Quality: DRS 936p to 1252p
- 30 fps Quality: 1134p to 1620p
- Above metrics are broadly same for PS5 and SX. They match visual features as well.

yup. the 120fps mode of Apex Legends for example quite literally runs worse than the game perfoms on my Steam Deck, where I get a decently stable 90fps, while the PS5 version regularly drops below 90fps.

and when the 120fps mode launched the PS5 version dropped to 720p in order to stay at near 120fps.

they since increased the lower bounds of the dynamic resolution, which negatively impacted the performance, but in a battle royale image clarity is extremely important.

this however is less of a hardware issue and more of a developer issue (the Series X version runs significantly better in a way no other game does). but of course the PS5 Pro will also help with those; issues that are cause by bad optimisation and/or bad dev choices.

so I am looking forward to playing Apex Legends at hopefully a locked 120fps. and I look forward to dynamic resolutions not dropping below 1080p constantly

I got the launch PS5 with a disc drive. Eventually got a separate HD-BR for Dolby Vision support, haven't popped a disc in since year 1.

Physical buyers are real loud, but Sony gets the telemetry on how often it's used.

imagine paying 700$ for a console..

with that being said. MS like a retard trying to push that 2tb ( they call it special edition but nothing special about it ) for 600$. so I wouldn't be surprised.

but if history is anything to go buy. i would assume its 600$ for the base version and 650$ for the disk version.

I do have a jailbroken PS5 that I have no intention to sell. but if this console provide a worthy upgrade, might buy one of those too

Not sure i'll bite as i did with the PS4 Pro, if the speculations are that it will cost $600, then it's going to be around $800 in here, my PS5 digital cost me around $580 at launch, so it's around 200 bucks extra, and while having a boost to performance is something i very much looking forward to, it will be to expensive to justify for what.. around 2 years of use before the PS6 released.

So with Forbidden west leaving ps premium in September I could see them updating it with raytracing hopefully they've updated the Decima engine to really show off what it can do because that game needs better lighting especially in the desert areas

I was kind of hoping of a bit more design change. Something to make it stand out more that it’s a pro.
It's quite possible the actual console has embellishments / materials that make it stand out, which wouldn't be perceptible from this render. I wouldn't be down on it yet. Differentiation is the name of the game, especially when trying to sell a premium device. I think Sony will do something to help it stand out if the case geometry is truly as similar as is being portrayed here.

Yes - I suspect GG will want to flaunt Decima on the new hardware, so either a big Pro patch or the rumoured HZD Remake or maybe even both.

the Pro most likely needs to support the disc drive. so with that modular drive they basically designed themselves into a corner.

this seem to me like the lower half of the sytem, up to the split in the middle, will be 1 for 1 the exact same shape as the Slim.

it's almost like they used the gap not so much as a design choice to make it look good, but instead used the gap so that the face plates and the disc drive fit on both models, even tho the Pro is slightly bigger.

so that's what I think happened here (I only looked at the drawing and didn't read any info on it mind you)
they just took the slim design, stretched it on the long axis along the center dividing line, and added some fins to make it look ok

Was thinking about getting this day 1 but might pass if it’s digital only. Don’t really want a detachable disc drive.

Not telling you what to do with your money....

however, I find this particular statement to be weird.

There is technically only ONE SKU of PlayStation 5 on the market. And when the pro comes along, there will be two. Both of them support a disc drive attachment. And it even cost about the price of a physical game.
I was under the impression that only the digital pro was certain, if they release the disc pro at launch i have no problem whatsoever.

Global inflation is the highest it has been in over 30 years... The United States out of all industrialized nations has handled inflation the best and we still see significant price increases.

The idea that this wasn't going to impact gaming is mindless.

They didn't know Wukong would be a significant hit and they didn't know helldivers 2 would be a significant hit. They also didn't know how well College Football 2025 would do. They also didn't know Concord would be a flop.

That's why it is called a forecast. Their forecast was based on how many base PS5s they thought they would sell and how many PS5 Pros.

The idea that only 1 million pros would sell in the 4 months it will be on the market within this forecast is hilarious. 250k per month across the globe?

What are you going to say when the PS5 Pro is announced with 2GB of storage?

Do you think the upgraded internals have the equivalent cost to an extra gig of storage?

And that's what we're going to see.

You factor in the user upgraded cost and build that into the base price. It's pretty simple. The type of people who are going to buy a PS5 Pro are EXACTLY the people who are likely to buy more storage. Rather than eschew those revenue to other companies, they'll capture that revenue for themselves.

You've hamstrung yourself in denying that it's likely to have 2TB despite the devkit having 2TB. Can you explain why they would increase the size of the storage on the devkit but not the retail model?

We've seen a massive increase in sales ratio towards the digital since the slim was released. The key here is that people thought it wasn't going to happen. In fact people thought there would be a price decrease.

Again, this is nonsense. They want to sell units. They will price it accordingly. Sony isn’t going to shoot them selves in the foot by selling fewer copies just because they want to make an additional $20 per unit on SSD upgrades.

The fact that the Devkit is rumored to have 2TB storage has absolutely nothing to do with the storage of the retail unit. You think the retail PS5 has the same RAM as in the devkit?

You suffer from a findamental misunderstanding of Sony’s plan for the PS5 Pro. They want to keep users in their ecosystem instead of losing them to Steam/PC gaming, and they want to drive increased software sales in their ecosystem as more gamers preferably choose PS for even third party titles.
Meanwhile you can’t see beyond ‘hardware revenue’.

But we can make this interesting by putting a $100 wager on the Storage space. I say 1TB for a base unit, max.

The PS5 design has always been shit...

Who was the genius who thought it was a good idea to have to dismantle the console to put in an SSD?

Phone reception is more important to me than human rights
More than 60m. units have been sold with an “ugly” design. The only thing preventing the system doing better numbers is price, nothing more nothing less.
Imagine knowing the PS5 sold this many consoles...and thinking the design is holding it back, lol

Wtf are Sony doing? PS4 Pro was a niche product and a LOT of people didn't upgrade over the PS4... people already don't like the look of the current PS5 console. If they had designed it to be more visually appealing this thing would have had a chance of selling WAY better than it's going to. Yeah it'll be powerful but people already have one ugly PS console in their house. They must be betting that games like GTA VI are going to help push sales for this thing.
Looking back, there's a thread here on this.

Data as of Jan 2020 Details Disc Retail, Bundled, and Digital Disc and Bundled- SIEA: 11th Jan 2020 SIEE: 12th Jan 2020 SIEJA: 12th Jan 2020 Digital: 19th Jan 2020 PS4: 105.3 million (including 14.3 million PS4 Pro) as of 19th Jan 2020 PSVR: 5.1 million as of 19th Jan 2020

That's 13.6% of PS4 Pros sold and that was at a price point of $400, the same as PS4 launch price.

I can't see PS5 Pro selling for any more than $550 Digital Version, $600 with disc drive and this is assuming the PS5 Pro has 1TB storage and PS5 doesn't get a price cut. If not, it'll sale worst than the PS4 Pro.

Most of these games were also designed for the old gen. Current-gen-only games don't have that issue. Especially first party games.

Just like PS4 pro, I will wait for PS6.
Completely different strategy for me; I didn't buy a PS5; I'm going for a PRO. Next will be PS6 PRO, if it will come out...first 3 years are just cross-gen games for any New Hardware, and very few exclusive, so I will proceed like this ;)

Quickly checking, the Disk add-on is 120€ here. If they release this thing for 600€ and digital only, that'll be 720€ for a pro disk version.

Sound strategy, but I think if there were no pandemic and supply issues, cross-gen would not have been a thing. at least, it would have lasted for only 1 year except for sports games.

At 600 this this thing will have to kick some serious ass for me to do a $3-400 upgrade. I don't even know what a used disc PS5 sells for. Around $300?

Huh, this design does put to rest the question of how would they incorporate the replaceable plates and disc drive in the new design, since the Pro would have to be bigger to accommodate more heat: just make it more vertical by putting some "dark space" in between. This streamlines the process of not needing new plate or disc drive manufacturing; just slide in what you already have.
that is fucking brilliant.

Best way is a PS5 Refresh on 5nm.
Same CPU/GPU/RAM but clocked higher.

The GPU would still be RDNA2 (for BC) but with dual-issue and RDNA3.5 RT/AI hardware, nothing from RDNA4 to keep cost down.

The real improvement would come from AI upscaling and PSSR. That alone makes it a better upgrade than the PS4 Pro vs PS4.

It would cost the same as the normal PS5 ($500), Sony would still only be producing one chip, devs wouldn't need to patch or optimize any games, avoiding any Xbox Series S scenarios and the AI upscaling is system level.

Neah...I'm good. I'm not getting the PRO until I see some actual good games pushing AI/physics /graphics and not the lazy slop we've been served these years. So maybe when GTA 6 drops.
