Black Myth: Wukong comes to Xbox August 20th 2025

While I won't condemn people for their suspicions, as another user pointed out, Aug 20th does seem to hold some significance to the dev team or publisher. I don't believe a deal was in place. In saying that, the optics of the announcement is suspect and it also led me to initially question if there was some sort of exclusivity deal. Someone entertaining this notion doesn't mean "they don't know anything about the industry" as some users have suggested.

Just to keep the theory crafting going, all three assertions can be true at the same time, those being an exclusivity agreement in place, issues with Series S port, and that Aug 20th is important to the team. The fact that this date is significant does not outright debunk anything. I'm not aware of any communication from the dev team nor Sony on the matter that would conclusively put the matter to bed.

Ehhh, kinda lost interest after finding out it's a souls like and not a character action game.

Also, a year of exclusivity. Launching as soon as the year is over.

#slimyplatformthings

It's actually not that much souls like at all imo and feels more like a ninja gaiden with a twist.

I finished the game 3 times, it's an absolute blast. Try it.

Well, at least I hope the game launches well-optimized on Xbox with that "curious" extra year. On PS5, it received a ton of post-launch patches that improved the experience.

Oh yeah, the game that was so much hyped on, and was eventually not that original (at least for me). I'm glad I didn't follow the hype (which happened so many times in my life I am embarassed)

Wukong is not even remotely like this. Everyone else has reported it was a timed exclusive but some random dev/person on twitter said, "nah its the series x optimization"
You would think if it was even actually about optimization, they would have at least sent out a presser or something being like "hey, we are still at it, updates soon"- Its literally been radio silence for months.
That's the other way round actually, the devs said "we need more time to optimise Xbox version" (it was on their website)

PC and PS5 users can enjoy the full game starting August 20, 2024. We are currently optimizing the Xbox Series X|S version to meet our quality standards, so it won't release simultaneously with the other platforms. We apologize for the delay and aim to minimize the wait for Xbox users. We will announce the release date as soon as it meets our quality standards.

And then Microsoft PR said "we don't comment on deals with other companies", Paul Tassi and Jez said "well here's your proof there is a deal"
"As we have said before, we're excited for the launch of Black Myth Wukong on Xbox Series X|S and are working with Game Science to bring the game to our platforms. We'd prefer not to comment on the deals made by our partners with other platform holders but we can confirm that the delay is not due to Xbox platform limitations that have been raised to us."

And then one of the devs blamed the Series S

Yocar goes on to state that the "10G shared memory" that is used by the Xbox Series S made releasing the game on the system impossible "without a few years of optimization experience". That pretty much rules out all the talk about back-handed PlayStation deals, and confirms what many already believed, being that the Series S is once again causing major headaches for a developer.

Exactly one year later? Hmm, think I may be eating crow on this one.

same. especially after playing in on PC at 1080p. medium settings and 720p upscaling = 5-5.gb gb vram usage

not even kidding. consoles games don't need much "regular" RAM as they do on PC so I'm not going to delve into that. on PC, you have a lot of duplicate data between RAM and VRAM due to how things works on PC (something consoles don't have to worry about because there's one big memory pool). worst case scenario it should need like 2 GB CPU data and that would still be be within Series S memory budgets actually. look at any random AAA game and you will see bloated RAM usage that does not make sense with how much memory they're working with on all consoles

you can even get the game working properly while the game uses a total of 7 gb memory in total (which still has the duplicate data bloated RAM usage on PC)

this game would be able to work on Series S day 1 without even any "optimizations". i won't believe otherwise

It's just a coincidence, calma calma, these things happen.

Antoine Griezmann's three children all share the same birthday: April 8th. His daughter Mia was born on April 8, 2016, his son Amaro on April 8, 2019, and his daughter Alba on April 8, 2021.

He exclusively bangs his wife and she exclusively ovulates one time a year.

Every conspiracy was actually right lol. The hidden deal after multiplat releases announced. No comment from Sony or the studio. No marketing because Nvidia had it just like I said. Making journalists and MS look like liars for a year. Unbelievable. So many people on here were so offended that MS basically just told the truth politely but didn't officially comment on a partner's deal with someone else.
Ain't that the truth 👏

Crazy how people who end up in cults think everything is a conspiracy.

one year exclusivity deals RARELY result in games coming out exactly 365 days later. In fact if a contract stipulated 365 days, the game likely would have come out a day later.

What's more likely is that they're using the same date to commemorate the original release.

For reference look at exclusivity deals with Square Enix and Sony, which came to PC like 11 months later. The same was true of Octopath Traveler going from Switch to PC.

Rise of the Tomb Raider another major exclusive also launched like 11 months later.
You keep digging brother 🤣

Q: Why did it take so long to bring the game to Xbox, and what can I expect now?

A: Bringing Black Myth: Wukong to Xbox Series X|S—and ensuring the experience met our internal quality standards—was no easy feat. Fortunately, we were able to complete this challenging task smoothly within the first year of the game's official release.

If you're an Xbox player who hasn't yet experienced the game on another platform, we're confident it will stand among the finest ARPGs available on Xbox.

deal or no deal, this is great news for emerald boys everywhere.
The game is one of the best of last year, my goty for sentimental (and gameplay) reasons.

Some people pointed out everything related to this game is on August 20th, which is apparently the birthday of the monkey God

UE5 trailer posted on August 20th, 2021

And of course the PC/PS5 release on August 20th, 2024 and now the Xbox release on August 20, 2025.

I suppose the Switch 2 version will release on August 20th, 2026 if ever

EDIT: Phil's words make sense now

As noted by one Reddit post, after translating it from Spanish, Phil Spencer was doing an interview about the game and noted that he "knew" when it would arrive on Xbox. When asked when that was, his response was:

"I can't say it."

It has nothing to do with NG and takes much more inspiration from Souls games,

Never in my life did I hear about a secret timed exclusivity deal with zero marketing involved, but this is too insignificant of a hill to die on so I'm willing to eat crow lol.

What happened to him, though. Haven't seen him in a while.
He died of natural causes a few years after his fame.

Edit: I misremembered lol, he's living in the UAE now.

Don't worry, I'm sure the Series S version will run at 1440p 60fps.
This is the part I want to see lol.

Also, Sony is never shy about these exclusivity deals. I don't see why this one would be any different.

That said it's funny how MS lost both viral games 2 years in a row between this and Baldur's Gate 3.

Yeah....Xbox series S was just poor excuse. Got it last year for my PS5 but I will not support in the future this studio with shady excuses to exclusive deals.

You know what...massive W on Sony if they got an exclusivity deal while doing zero marketing for game they have exclusivity for
They're more likely to be playing Mafia The Old Country or Gears Reloaded when this game comes out. It probably comes and goes without much notice from Xbox players.
I mean we know they ain't buying games on that dying platform....
Creeping Parks And Recreation GIF

Guys... you do know that they wouldn't be allowed to announce the Xbox version, LET ALONE accept pre-orders for it, until the deal runs out, right..?
This is the studio deliberately choosing that release date once again. It has a special meaning for them? I don't know, but @Three's post above shows them using the August 20th date a lot.

Perhaps. It really doesn't matter at this point. Certainly not enough to resurrect a year old argument.

Please explain why and how they're announcing the port before the supposed deal actually runs out.
Because it wasn't a marketing deal, just a one year exclusivity deal. They couldn't keep up the lie that it was because of Series S issues if they announced the clearly suspicious one year to the day delayed launch without it being obviously bullshit. If they announced this date months ago the. Obviously they solved the issue and why not just release it asap? It'd be too obvious there was a delay deal.

So whatever deal they had with Sony didn't preclude them from talking about Xbox or revealing a release date, it was simply a one year delay.

I think at this point there's more evidence to assume there was a delay deal as opposed to the contrary.

Eh....if they were so worried about keeping up the lie then they could have chosen a different date. I don't think we will ever know either way for sure. Like I said, it doesn't matter.

Doesn't explain why they would lie or why this and only this exclusivity deal is "secret".
The wait has nothing to do with a mythical agreement. Their development team clearly has a good project planning time-box for marketing/release. They revealed the game and UE4 build trailer on August 20th 2020, did an UE5 build trailer on August 20th 2021, released the final build August 20th 2024, will release an Xbox Build August 20th 2025. Nothing is special about that date other than Games Science's own schedule.
How you know the were lying? And almost every agreement like this is under NDA…
