Black Myth: Wukong is the lowest-rated game to get a Game of the Year nomination

Interestingly, the highest-rated nominee for Game of the Year was Super Mario Odyssey in 2017. The lowest, before Black: Myth Wukong, was shared by Control (2019) and A Plague Tale: Requiem (2022), scoring 82. Other closely related scores include Annapurna Interactive's Stray, which achieved a score of 83 in 2022, and Resident Evil Village, which managed 84 points in 2021.

What do you think? Press scores matter or Steam user review are more authentic?

The game has flaws, but I don't think something has to be perfect to be excellent. What matters most is that is that when playing you are not ingesting the same regurgitated slop you had over and over. It feels fresh and wholesome.

Amazing game and comically better than Dragon Age: The Trashguard. More deserving than a DLC too.

I know it won't happen, but I would be so happy to see this game win just to witness the meltdowns of western journos.

it's also one of the most deserving of a win and the low scoring was a fault of the professional gaming press, if anything.

Obviously no comment allowed to the article.

Hope it gets a PS5 Pro patch and a HDR update and then I will be the happiest boy.

Almost as if review scores are dumb as fuck, bordering on irrelevant and not indicative of a game's quality or popularity.

If Stray can get nominated anything can. What an absolute joke and embarrassment to the industry that nomination is and all because it has a cat in it. Replace the cat with a possum, or a rat and see if it would have got the same reception. It's just stupid.

It could have been rated in the 50's and it would have been chosen. Chinese people will use the internet to watch the game awards. The game awards will then be able to tweet that record numbers of viewers watched the event.

It deserves to be one of the nominee, but also Geoff wants that Chinese market audience.

This year TGA will break viewership records just from Chinese audience alone

Geoff's not silly. He knows if even a fraction of the Chinese audience tune in, he breaks viewership records.

Fortunately, he doesn't need to worry about placating them with the GOTY award because he's already baited them in by that point anyway.

the want the Chinese demographic to tune in, so there's that. That would explain why it got chosen over other games that got higher acclaim.

Why was it the lowest rated? Because it wasn't as good as the other games in the list. It's a 7-8/10 game at most, nothing more. It's a derivative game. A good one, but nothing special. The only game in that list that is closest to it in terms of gameplay, Elden ring shadow of the erdtree, demolishes this game in every way.

It is a strange nominee, especially given the stupid rules clarification.

There are plenty of remakes and remasters rated way higher that should have that spot.

Gee, I wonder why it was rated that low hmmm?
It's not a very good game? Combat is so-so and it has a boat load of technical issues on consoles with frankly amateur choices around performance modes. Especially for an action game the choices they made for framerate caps, resolutions, etc? It's downright embarrassing. It probably got nominated because it sold a billion copies in China.

Those same reviewers said combat was great. In fact check out the one posted in this very thread. I get performance issues on consoles but they're not that glaring or downright bad. Relevant because friggin Elden Ring is in the same list with those same exact problems you listed and that got a pass because? Since when did copies meant nominee? 2K, Fifa and COD would get nominated every year if that was the case.

Reviews are subjective, I get that but when I see people who already had a negative agenda on the game far before the game even released use reasons outside the game itself to criticize it on their review, it just muddies the waters even more. At the very least, judge the game on its own merit and I say this as someone who can accept diversity and inclusion in games as long as the game is actually good.

I would've much rather had Silent Hill 2 Remake in its place for all the work they put into that, and for that being the most well received Bloober title yet.

Honestly as curious as I have been about the game, I feel like almost anything else would've been a better replacement.

Ofc Playstation timed exclusives get a free pass at the Game Awards, like Stray (83 MC) before it.
Stray was a stupid game and definitely not a GOTY but it's exactly the sort of thing that the people who write for game sites would like.

You have to know who is voting for these things. It's not "objective."

Scores mean nothing, especially so in the politically charged world we live in, which has been invaded by every aspect of it.
