You continue to discount the Amazon sales chart. You initially responded that Amazon is not indicative of the rest of the market for hardware sales. Where did you get this information? You've not been able to back anything up about that statement. Most likely you made it up. If you can't prove otherwise drop that nonsense. Demand is demand. Sales is demand. The Series S is charting very high on Amazon SALES charts. Those are sales (i.e. demand).

It does sound like the Series S's success is affecting you. You've spent a lot of time responding to my messages trying to downplay its success. If it doesn't change your life why do you continue to respond?

NPD stated Series outsold PS5. Are you doubting that now?

Are you just trolling me now? LOL! Like come on man. You are the only person that seems to think I'm "downplaying" the success of the Xbox Series S. My only beef with people like you are the author of the arctile is we don't actually know "HOW" successful the XSS was in the month of November. And again you pointing to Amazon is further proof you don't understand how retail sales work on a larger level. Amazon sales charts gives us a small glimpse of what's happening, but it doesn't show the whole picture.

And NPD said that the Xbox Series "family" consoles outsold the PS5, not the "S" version by itself. How can you not understand the difference?
Just came back from our local WalMart and the Xbox display case was filled with Series S about 15 in total

With 2 days before Christmas
wonder how many will actually sell as last minute gifts at this point

I'm sorry, but doesn't this sound awfully weird to some of you guys? 15 Series S consoles in one local Walmart, 2 days before Christmas. Unless MS is making three times as many Series S consoles, relative to Series X consoles; I don't see how doesn't speak to a difference in demand (between it and the XSX and PS5).

Unless..........the stock dudes just put them on the floor an hour before HeisenbergFX4 HeisenbergFX4 got to his local Walmart.

I too thought it was a lot for one WalMart who has had the Series S in and out of stock for months now but usually just 3 or 4 in the display case, this time is was the only thing in the Xbox display case

Thought I would check with my friend who oversees several area Game Stops and he said too they have quite a few in stores but they are moving them fairly well and stock is coming in much faster than the XSX or PS5

For commodities, maybe. They don't have the name brand flour so you're forced to buy the store brand or you don't eat. Or you're allergic to the medicine your doctor wants to prescribe so you have to use something not quite as effective to treat your illness.

Nobody is forced to buy XSS because they can't find XSX or PS5. Nobody ever died from lack of video game consoles that I'm aware of.
Well ...you can wait one, two years to play Halo or you can play Halo now ... you want to play Halo on a "next gen" console and you can only play it on the console that is avaible .... but .. its not medicine, so you are right , you can wait forever and play it on XsX or ps5 in the future

We may not know, but doesn't the NPD know (they just don't release those numbers). And we do know that the Series S outsold the PS5 in November, per the NPD (sans numbers). So do you not trust the NPD? You keep saying Amazon is not indicative of the market, you keep discounting the NPD, but you have NOTHING to back up anything you've said. No, the NPD does not give a full picture. No, Amazon does not give a full picture. You add together the data (FACTS) we have to piece together the puzzle as best you can. And doing that we know the XSS outsold the PS5 in November and is selling enough to chart fairly high with the largest retailer in the US. It's really that simple, but you continue to rule this out or discount it or try to move the talking points. And it's funny if you've actually been doing this for decades, as you claim. You just don't seem to have a very good grasp on the market, like at all.

And now you want to rely on the NPD, but claim instead that Microsoft magically got a shit load of supply of the Series X and that is what outsold the PS5 in November. But tell me, who was selling these Series X consoles? When were they being sold? I monitor these sites that track the consoles in stock and the XSX was never in stock for more than a minute, maybe a couple of times in November. Use some critical thinking. MS did not all of a sudden get a huge supply dump in November when Sony has been out producing them for over a year. It makes no sense. Again, critical thinking!!

Yeah....maybe Microsoft is legitimately making the Series S the led platform of the two going forwared if you're measuring it by which one they are making and shipping more of. Or maybe it's just temporary.

I didn't discount the NPD at all actually. What are you talking about. I asked you where did NPD say the Xbox Series S model sold more units than the PS5 for the month of November.

I've LITERALLY NEVER seen a PS5 in stores in my entire life! And it sells out within minutes worldwide, yet it's one of the fastest selling consoles of all time. So just because "YOU" personally don't see the XSX in stock doesn't mean there isn't stock being sold. We have no reason to believe that the far majority of all Xboxs sold in November were the Series S variant. Not with the numbers that we have. We need more data.

And again, this is why having raw data (like they give in Japan) is best and why I argue FOR it, instead of against it like some others on GAF. I'm more interested in the data, not the narratives.

Wait wait wait. So there is stock for the PS5? You say it is the fastest selling console of all time. So there must have been a ton of PS5's sold in November? And then the Series S still outsold it? Outsold the fastest selling console of all time? And you're saying there is limited demand for the Series S? When it just outsold the PS5? The fastest selling console of all time? Really? Hmm...

You are really all over the place. LOL. It might be time for you to step away because your arguments are falling apart. It's quite funny actually.

I'm talking about for the whole year of 2021. I rarely ever saw stock online and NEVER saw stock in stores. Yet, it sold crazy. So just because something "seems" to never be in stock, doesn't mean it's not selling in huge numbers. You're just having a terrible time keeping up with good logic.

Sorry bro. :-/

Now you're talking bout the whole year of 2021? LOL! Since when? We've all along been talking about November 2021. The article is about the month of November! But now you're talking about the whole year. Yeah, right! You just keep backtracking and backtracking.

I can't believe you've been following sales for decades. I call bs. I have not been following sales for nearly that long and yet I'm stomping you in this discussion. How can you follow video game sales for decades and lack any type of critical thought about the subject matter?

So, all the article is reporting is that the Series S outsold the PS5 in November most likely due to availability. Makes sense. Doesn't say anything about how it is selling comparing to the Series X which would be more interesting and relevant to be honest.

Not sure why people are in a tizzy about this. Sure, it's obvious but they still need to report it.

Edit - Apparently the Series X isn't available either so that answers that.

I have no idea why this thread ran this long. The article isn't controversial at all! Microsoft did have the edge over Sony during the period simply because they were able to manage their supply chain better and have at least Series S stocked and on the shelves for the big holiday season. No one can buy stuff that ain't on stock. I don't know exactly how Series S is easier to manufacture amid the wide spread chip shortage, but MS did manage it, and that's absolutely a key advantage.

Pair that with lower price, game pass, and some big hitters coming out, it's no surprise XSS is doing so well.

Demand for PS5 and XSX is of course still there but that means jack if the units can't be manufactured and stocked. MS just had a plan B with the XSS so credit where credit is due.

Could have put the cringe tag on the article. Theres only one reason ps5 isn’t 2x series right now. Chip shortages.

It doesn't make sense given what he wrote. He should of said the XBox Series consoles outsold the PS5 in November. That's what happened. It wasn't the Xbox Series S by itself and that matters. Selling lies leads people to say what Bulletbrain Bulletbrain said below in the bolded. Unless we believe that 85% of all next-gen Xbox consoles sold were the "S" variant. Which to me would be mind blowing!

One reason this thread ran this long is because the author literally changed the story from the Xbox Series consoles out sold the PS5 in November, to the Xbox Series "S" outsold the PS5 in November. And he changed the story without providing any data of any sort.

The 2nd reason is because the author says "this holiday season". And maybe I missed something, but I thought we were still in the holiday season. Does he have numbers for December?

The 3rd reason is because America doesn't equal the world.

Come on.

People just need to accept that it's an uneven playing field, far far far far more people buy PlayStation, in many more countries, than xbox. That's because xbox rightly tanked during the previous generation.

Accept it. The only console that didn't need to be purchased at hugely inflated scalper prices was so purchased.

The first of the three points is the only valid point. Gamepass wouldn't win the holiday if everyone who wanted a PS5 could get one.

Just.. xbox owners (of whom i am one) just need to accept that they're going to lose to PlayStation in basically every way besides TFLOP count and a few bigger, but less efficient numbers on their most expensive box and focus on their own pet console rather than throwing pebbles at PlayStation. It's lame.

The OP has basically the entire article copy pasted, and has not been edited since posting. It also says Series S there.

I think the original article author just used Series S as their talking point as a catch-all term. Or, hell, for all we know Series S alone could have outsold the PS5. It's not like NPD or MS are giving out numbers to the public.

Anyone wanting to buy a series x in Ireland, they've on sale on Smyths (home delivery and some stores) for the past few days.

What is the big PlayStation holiday game?
They don’t need any honestly. Just getting a new shiny console with a new library of games is enough for most. Remember the XSX and XSS didn’t have any major first party games for nearly a year which is crazy, yet the console continued to sell at a feverish pace each month. I don’t think the lack of a high profile holiday game will hurt Sony this Christmas and a few major games are just a few months off anyway.

Most people don't give a shit about exclusives anyways.

So NVIDiA should never have released the RTX3060? PC GPUs should only target the high end, flagship buyers? the Steam Deck should not exist?

To be fair, you never said it was good logic.

Actually, the Series S is helping with the next gen switch. Tremendously so. It’ll get people off the xbox ones and One X that you despise so much.

The two biggest, most transformative changes for next gen consoles are the fast CPU and the SSD. Series S matches the flagship consoles in these aspects.

You should really be more concerned about PC gaming holding back multiplatform next gen titles. Because most devs will target SATA SSDs or affordable NVMe drives at best for a long time to come. When they finally move off HDDs.

Take Forspoken. Next gen exclusive on console. Announced to be ‘built from the ground up’ for PS5. Yet targeting a day one PC release and requiring an HDD as minimum requirement.
Don't forget XSS gpu is far beyond anything ps4 pro or Xbox one x has to offer with RDNA 2 features that crushes any last generation system.

If it had a bigger drive or even a Disc drive for my OG XBox/360 collection i would buy one today.
I actually planned to get a Series S as a dedicated Game Pass machine before the consoles launched before switching to Series X as my main console. Still plan on getting a PS5 in 2022/23.

It's worked out pretty well so far.

BusinessInsider is a financial blog. Not written for angry GAFfers. Their target audience don’t live on gaming enthusiast forums. It’s also a well written piece. Why would any sane person mock the article? Or claim it’s a ‘sponsored bit?

I’m sorry, but at this point , this looks like a mental health issue for some of you people.

Basically saying you lied. It’s got a mostly solid 60fps performance mode.
My bad not performance mode i meant quality mode which is less then 30fps

But that's also not true .. Series S has a prety flawless 30 FPS mode with only minor frame pacing issues. Time stamped in the video below, not a single frame drop in their captured segments.

If anything, there looks to be overhead for Series S to run at dynamic 1440p here.

Exactly! Thats why sony has an advantage with exclusives...I wish microsoft didn't make the stupid Series S.
Some of the highest rated games came from MS this year. The XSS did not prevent their creation. The XSS will be a major vector into the Xbox ecosystem those additional customers will support the games of the future. I'm glad MS made the XSS. More options are good for gamers.

who I see worried about the fate of the Xbox games and the s series are just the usual suspects (among other things, obvious fans of the Sony console) .. in the meantime we have seen the game with the best graphics (from a technical point of view of course..I obviously don't want to go into the subjectivity of art direction) on consoles to date and is on Xbox ... Hellblade 2
I think devs will start hitting a wall with the Xbox Series S. I wouldn't be surprised if it's holding up some Xbox releases. Remember what the COD and ID Software developers had to say about its ram

No.

The thread ran this long because some fans of a certain console maker are extremely insecure (we know which one).

I think the Series S is not selling in any country outside the US in any decent amount and MS is sending almost all their Series S stock to the US.

We need to see global sales to get a better picture of the real ratio.
