Canadian Dollar discussion thread

I see discussion about our plummeting dollar polluting a lot of other threads, especially Canada-related news threads, so let's have a central place to discuss and complain about our rapidly depreciating dollar.

It just hit an 11 year low. We're back into the 76-cent USD range, with no signs it'll reverse any time soon.

Immediate effects?

More expensive games:

(new console releases were usually $60 not so long ago)

And more!

Any sweet plans to deal with the new reality? Personally I've cut out buying games at launch. Prices always fall at least a bit after a few months (if not a LOT), even Nintendo games. I've also been trying to eat more local produce that Americans don't really import so much, like squash, potatoes, etc.

I went and preordered most of the games I'll be getting this year during Amazon's E3 sale in order to make their prices more reasonable. I won't be getting much outside of that.

this would be great for tourism but first you would have to find someone who wants to go to canada.

let american citizens start buying medicine without prescriptions?

Sigh. This has dramatically affected business where I work. Foods and goods that would've normally sold-through weekly are now not. We have to send a lot more goods back for credit because they're reaching near-expiration dates from sitting on the shelf for so long. People are way more cautious with their money now.

Best of all, everyone gets angry at our employees because they think we're raising prices for shits and giggles when in reality we're barely breaking even because of the low dollar.

This will actually be my second trip this summer to Canada (going to Montreal this weekend). I didn't want to go just because the exchange rate is better, but it helps. We had the same thing happen in NYC back when the dollar was weak against the euro...had a lot more European tourists visiting a few years back.

I've been traveling to the United States from Canada twice a year for the last few years. Gen Con next week is my last trip for a while.

Have already cancelled one trip to Seattle I was planning for an NFL weekend in the fall

That's the only impact on me thus far apart from the rising video game costs. Have pre-ordered 25 games between Futureshop (RIP) and Amazon, so won't be purchasing anything outside of those at reduced prices

My wife lives in Winnipeg and I live in Fargo, this certainly helps me make more contribution to rent & bills up there!

Hopefully it doesn't last, but I can't say this isn't pushing me to visit Canada in the next 5 years. I've always wanted to!

I will be heading to NYC this summer like I always do but won't be doing much in the way of shopping. Prices are already jacked at ballparks and the exchange rate stings.

Was just in Vancouver a couple of weeks ago. Sure the exchange rate is nice but even with it, things seemed like they were just as expensive as here in LA.

More expensive food:

Also note this is over a 15 year period. If you annualize this increase in costs you get the following average annual increase of each of these. Most are pretty reasonable with beef and bread being the really high ones, a big portion of that beef increase would've been this year alone as cattle prices have gone crazy.

Fresh or frozen beef - 5.3%
Fresh or frozen pork - 3.1%
Other meat - 3.2%
Fresh or frozen chicken - 3.3%
Other poultry - 1.7%
Ham and bacon - 2.8%
Other processed meat - 3.3%
Fresh or frozen fish - 2.2%
Canned/preserved fish - 1.9%
Seafood/marine products - 1.2%
Fresh milk - 2.6%
Butter - 2.5%
Cheese - 2.2%
Eggs - 3.6%
Bread, rolls and buns - 4.9%

I'm going to look like such a genius when gas prices come down, having bought a truck as my sole vehicle.
If they don't, then oil is going back up and our dollar will get better. Everything is coming up milhouse regardless!

Any savings from price cuts on aging hardware will be offset by the crappy dollar. Pooh.

Boned myself by passing on video card and QHD monitor deals from last fall/winter. Wait for the Rx 300 I said. Prices will drop and deals will be had I said.

Imagine if you were earning an American wage.

It's like getting a 25% raise for doing absolutely nothing in a scant 2 years.

Absolutely bonkers.

Good time to be a U.S. consumer. What should I import from Canadia? No bagged milk.
Buy Assassin's Creed and visit Cirque Du Soleil. Maybe stop by Tim's and order a double-double. Give Bieber and Alex Trebek a high-five.

What's the most scenic place in Canada if I wanted to take advantage of my USD? I like fall colors.

Yup quite insane. I'm glad most of my money is in USD since last year, and now pretty much all of it.

My work's parent organization is American. Our salaries are in Canadian dollars, but bonuses and awards are in US dollars. Getting a bonus is always nice, but now it's really, really nice.
