I feel at once lucky that I'm going to be working in the US for likely the next 2 years, and also sad for my fellow Canadians. :(

Thanks, Harper.

Gotta repost today's "what financial crisis?" message from the PMO:

Outside of buying crap is this really that horrible? Making Canadian labour cheaper seems like a plus for attracting jobs. Too bad most of the auto industry is leaving Ontario for Mexico.

Does a lot of Canada's food come from the US or something?

Kinda surprised there is a noticeable increase. Of course, I am from the US and have never really noticed getting fucked over by the strength or weakness of the dollar, though that might be due to our massive economy.

We make a lot of our own food but something like half of the food that's imported comes from the US.

Seriously, at this rate I hope there's some heavy, incredibly illegal corruption shit that leaks out and sticks to Harper and he goes to jail just to guarantee that he won't be voted back as PM.

Don't forget the fact that farmers are literally paid to throw away perfectly good food to create artificial demand and keep prices high.

Discretionary spending is going to take a hit as well, since a lot of stuff is imported from overseas namely the US.

The dollar sucks hot shit, and has ruined all my travel plans. And yes I do blame Harper for going all in on oil and not diversifying the economy.

Just one of many many reasons why he needs to go asap.

lowered purchasing power because wages isn't rising should tell you that it affects everyone.

Imagine if you were earning an American wage.

It's like getting a 25% raise for doing absolutely nothing in a scant 2 years.

Absolutely bonkers.

I wish. I get some stock money occasionally in American bucks, but it doesn't make up for lost purchasing power elsewhere.

What's the most scenic place in Canada if I wanted to take advantage of my USD? I like fall colors.

Nova Scotia in the fall is pretty nice. So many maple trees in Halifax all turn to shades of red/orange/yellow.

Theoretically, if we wait enough time for brand new factories to be built, this would benefit low skill factory workers and help increase exports. For most of us? We're getting fucked over. It's like taking a pay cut.

I forgot to mention that if you have any particularly valuable games now is a good time to start selling them. That copy of Earthbound or Suikoden 2 will now fetch an extra 30% after conversion back from USD on ebay.

It hasn't affected me much personally just yet but it is kind of annoying just how expensive videogames are right now. 30% increase is nothing to sneeze at - if you are on a finite budget that means buying 2 games instead of potentially 3 games.

On the plus side, steam is priced in canadian dollars now and sometimes certain games are priced at parity.

This is a real problem for people on a small fixed income though , 100$ of groceries last year is now 140$ of groceries , where do you get that 40$ from ? it's not like a welfare cheque goes up just because the dollar goes down.

Is this a permanent feature now? What is the outlook for oil. Will it bounce back anytime in the next 5ish years?

Also food is unbelievably expensive now. I want to eat healty, but f--k me, it's wallet draining to try.

Doubt it'll hit parity if that is what you're asking. Buy local, it's better for everyone and for your wallet.

Just got my credit card statement from Comixology, a charge for 44.55 on CMX, which I guess lists in American funds, cost me 57.55 Canadian. Was so shocked to see my bill 20 dollars more than I thought it would be. Ugh.

Figured I'd bump this for the new 11 year low, settling into 75cents US.

Oil also still hasn't found a bottom, now at $38 per barrel. Guess we're just going to continue getting dragged down with it.

That's pretty bad when you consider the US Dollar lost about 2% to the Euro today. I can't imagine how bad the Canadian dollar fared vs. the Euro today.

Our funny money's worthless.
Only a matter of time until we're the next Greece and begging the US to invade.

Picked the right time to move to the US. Now that when I'm getting paid in 'murican dollars I'm gonna be rich when/if I move back to Canada. AHAHAHAHAHA BOW TO YOUR AMERICAN CURRENCY OVERLORD!

What's the real reason for the huge price gain of milk, eggs, beef, pork, bread etc. All or the vast majority of it is made in Canada. The dollar should not have that huge of an impact. There has to be other stronger factors affecting price. Also, the Canadian dollar in 2000 was low too. Similar to now was it not? That would prove my point the dollar has little to do with rising food costs.

Edit: I just checked. In 2000 the cdn was at 67 cents. that picture is misleading.

Eggs and dairy are protected industry so other than the drought in the west I can't think of a dollar related reason for them to be increasing.

For everything else, exporting makes more money and California is on fire so food prices are increasing in the US, making food exports especially lucrative.

Edit: Oh you meant the OP pic. Yeah most of that is inflationary, I included it for demonstrative purposes, since food is actually getting more expensive.
