Want to know why a lot of young people cannot have a single income family, why both parents have to work? At then end of 2024, 43 million Americans owe 1.6 trillion dollars in federal student loans.

https://www.cnbc.com/2025/03/17/average-student-debt-balance-in-every-state.html
It's way beyond just student loans. Young people can't afford the rising costs of everything and it has been that way for quite some time. People without student loans also find it difficult.

I would also look to, "Will my degree get me a job to help pay off my student loans?"

Note: I am using "you" in the following not as a personal attack but using "you" as just a generality.

My thought is this, and I might be biased since I have a kid in college, I just graduated myself, with another kid who will be going in 4 years. If you are going to go to college, make sure you are going for the right reasons. It is your responsibility to pay off that loan, not the government's, not the tax payers', you. Can't find a job with your degree? Work something else until you can. Did you plan well when getting your degree? Well that is also on you. No one put a gun to your head saying got to college. Did you have to go to that $36k per year school when you could have went to community college the first 2 years to knock out the bs classes?

I am not trying to sound cold or mean but these people knew what they were signing up for and it is their responsibility to plan and pay accordingly.

Just be a chill person 🤷‍♂️
Exactly. lol

Never had trouble on my end. Probably because I dont instigate trouble. The last time I even got a ticket was a parking ticket 10 years ago. And I got it voided as he made a mistake due to the street having hourly restrictions signs so far apart most people wouldnt notice. The last legit ticket I got was another parking ticket which was my fault as I tried to do one of those park on the street for free for an hour assuming no cop would come by. Nope, they came and ticketed my car.

Woopee. No other hassles. Even during those times the city would do weekend road stops at midnight where everyone gets checked to make sure the driver isnt drunk, clear sailing. and has every time I went over the border to the US by car or plane. And no issues going over seas either. Just have everything ready, dont do anything stupid, and dont fight back any cops or security guys.

It's not hard to stay out of trouble..... well, just make sure youre quick enough to avoid parking tickets! lol

Youre right. After the left started doxxing them years ago hoping people go after them and their fam at home. As always two can play the same game.
See, the thing is, police show up ready to enforce laws and use violence. So they do have to protect their identity because they are gonna do it, over and over, which makes htem a target.

But the 'protesters', they are there to 'peacefully assemble and voice their opinion", so why the mask? Why? Because they ALSO showed up ready to do violence. They know, AHEAD OF TIME, that shit is gonna get physical so they come prepared with their masks. Making it harder to prove that it's the same group of professional rioters showing up across the country is a fringe benefit as well.

Mad cuz u can't ever look this good

22 going on 72! :P

Weird how Biden deported more Mexicans than Trump and you didn't have all these retards jumping in front of ICE cars
That's because they were still given due process and their time in court to plead their case for amnesty. Trump went away from the legal bounds and went with bombastic displays of force which make people uneasy as they go around in unmarked cars with masks, no identification and ignoring previous laws that were put in place about how to handle immigrants within that specific legal framework.

i think the Jimmy is an overreaction, definitely should have cancelled The View ages ago.

Apparently the latest reddit protest of the week is cancelling your disney+ subscription and citing the Jimmy thing as the reason lol. Sure, disney is going to care about the hundreds of cancellations

Only hoping for one outcome here 🙏

Probably got told.

Similar to people following trends, so do companies. And when it comes to corporate direction, any touchy situations might last.... until one or two take the plunge. Then the other companies follow suit.

Exact same thing happens regarding pricing (follow the category leader and wait till they make the first move), back to the office work schedules, and for the past year a big 180 on company policies on woke, dei. If this was 2021, there is zero chance any company would care about Kirk dying and firing people who said something dumb on social media. But in 2025 they will. Different gov and company mindset now.

Was just listening to Ben Shapiro's show this morning and I 100% agree with his take re. Jimmy Kimmel, there's a clip ^

TL;DW happy the show is gone, however the government/FCC should not be threatening networks because

- the other side will sure as hell do the same when they're the ones in power

- just on principle that the government shouldn't be telling the networks what they can/can't say

- now this muddied the waters and created the appearance of Trump administration silencing his media critics, which Dems are capitalizing on

He also criticized Trump for gloating and calling for Fallon/Meyers to be canceled.

You might guess which side of the political spectrum I fall on based on my posting in this thread (and reading it non-stop since last week), and even I felt a little squishy about Kimmel's removal and how it might have been impacted by Trump's FCC appointee. It's bad optics and can/will be used as justification if a conservative voice is (yet again) silenced in the future.

Also--not a big fan of Shapiro, personally, but I agree with the points outlined.

It's almost like they want to show everyone that people illegally entering the country are not welcome.

But I got a message that were getting too off-topic in here (I barely posted!?) so I'm out
Peace Out Goodbye GIF

But the FCC never actually did anything, so it's mostly an "empty threat" and it would have ABSOLUTELY gone to court had ABC wanted to fight it. That they caved immediately tells you that they wanted Kimmel gone and that the threats to pull the show were far more concerning. Kimmel giving a backhanded "mea culpa" would have worked as well, but he saw the cancellation writing on the wall as well. I'm sure he would have liked to do a victory lap before signing off but it is what it is.

I agree that the FCC guy just needs to STFU, but that's true for most admin types these days. They seem OBSESSED with social media, probably fishing for internet fame to use as a springboard for their next job. They all need to impose a mandatory "once a week" info digest session rather than this constant stream of hot takes.

The problem is that people who are legal citizens are also being captured by ice and not being released and held along with people with passports from other countries who are here for vacation. Ice is doing a far worse job then they have in the past and they have been given money they don't need nor deserve. All it looks like is Yosemite Sam bullshit to any sane person.

Yeah there's a lot I disagree with but I really appreciate his perspective. Whenever there's some big Trump controversy (which is practically every day) I'll listen to Shapiro to hear what's the best argument in favor of it from the right. Or to see if he disagrees with it, since he isn't afraid to directly disagree with the president and the MAGA world.

Like, I really don't give a crap what fucking Whoopi Goldberg thinks about something Trump did because she hates everything he does. But if Ben doesn't like it, he usually has a good reason.

I previously posted this guy's reaction to the death of Charlie Kirk, but I found this speech he just made at a campus to be relevant as well:

Unfortunately, I doubt it's going to be what some people want to hear on either side at this point in time. I do appreciate the thought, in any event, because that's what a civilized society should do. For the record, the guy is a historian (and a pastor), politically conservative but non-Trumpian.

All good advise. The only thing I will add/ respond to from it is this. I knew exactly what I wanted to do and what degree I wanted. I went to community college for 2 years, knocking out all of the general courses and following the strict transfer requirements for the university I intended to transfer to. I did not get an associates. Just the necessary classes for transfer plus additional general courses that would transfer. All with the intent that when I transferred, I would ONLY have to take the specialty classes for my major. I was a full time student, the entirety of the time.
After transferring and even doing summer classes, It still took me another 3 years to meet all requirements for graduation.
After figuring out all my debt, with the extra time spent at the university, I would have been better off just starting freshman year at the university.
I'm not unique with this experience either. I have spoken to many people with similar experiences.
In general, transferring schools adds time to graduate and that needs to be calculated into the decision.

( I didn't go to a super expensive university and it was in state)

A lot of office environments still dont even allow jeans. Never mind ultra casual stuff like coming in wearing sandals, halter tops, cut off jeans and shirts etc... Every office I've worked at doesn't even allow tshirts. Shirts must have a collar.
While I understand the importance and timing of dressing appropriately, if you come to any tech job in WA state dressed daily in a suit, you are either the VP heading to a meeting with clients or it is your own personal choice. Jeans and a tee is the bar.

Even Lyin' Ted Cruz doesn't like it.

Sen. Ted Cruz on his podcast Friday admonished Federal Communications Commission Chair Brendan Carr for demanding ABC suspend Jimmy Kimmel's late night show over comments regarding Charlie Kirk — calling Carr's actions "dangerous as hell" and "right out of 'Goodfellas.'"

"If the government gets in the business of saying, 'We don't like what you, the media, have said; we're going to ban you from the airwaves if you don't say what we like' — that will end up bad for conservatives," said the Texas Republican.

Yes, it appears so. Not too keen on politics related engagement for GAF though.
Nobody asked, but I personally think the way politics are now managed here is excellent. The occasional thread for big topics that otherwise inevitably spill everywhere else. Just for the really big stuff.

I have been wondering for a while that is that front page calculator correct? I was surprised when it used to show that visitor level was roughly same as Era, member ratio radically lower. Now it seems that visitors are roughly double that of Era - awesome if so! The low member ratio is actually a massive positive in my mind, it keeps signal-to-noise ratio much better.

As opposed to revealing their home address, and threatening them and their families?
They are public servants and funded by tax payers. Obviously threats of violence or doxing them is a crime, and should dealt with like all other crimes. There's no need to walk all over the constitution for something the other side could just as easily use to violate your rights - You are OK with Leftists saying they have to violate your rights because they dont want to receive threats or might get doxxed? Please think about what you are saying

It's aligned with the raw stats from analytics yeah. But I don't pay much attention to raw stats these days since the entire internet is being taken over by bots. You can clearly see the traffic bump, at any rate.

re: ice wearing masks

They did this because they *were* getting doxed and threatened. How does that serve the public interest?

If wearing masks wasn't necessary before they assassinated Charlie Kirk and widely celebrated the assassination of Charlie Kirk it surely is now.

Maybe.

But someone wearing business casual or a suit who does equal or better work than you will get the job. Or keep it better. Or have a higher chance of getting hired.

Unless it's a lax job or sector, most companies trust better dressed people because if someone slobs their way in interviews or at work, they wont be trusted as much. If they cant handle dressing nice for work or in front of customers, they probably cant be trusted at all. Even for most retail jobs, they got to put on a decently neat and tidy company branded shirt or uniform of some kind.

That's why for just about every job regarding medical, finance, law, they dress nice and tidy because it gives a sense to the patient or customer they care. You dont see them waltzing in wearing trashy clothes. And from there it goes downhill in a sliding scale. You dont need someone dressing great to be a car mechanic or warehouse guy. But usually, the more important and higher paying job, the better you got to dress.

A lot of office environments still dont even allow jeans. Never mind ultra casual stuff like coming in wearing sandals, halter tops, cut off jeans and shirts etc... Every office I've worked at doesn't even allow tshirts. Shirts must have a collar.
Really not my experience, though I'm in development so maybe it's the environment I'm in. Are you in the states?

Probably.

But don't fuck around and you won't get fucked around either unless you did something stupid. Mob mentality and angry protests or laughing a guy got shot in stage just makes things worse.

It's not hard to stay out of trouble and live a smooth life. And that's even despite having to do everything myself like getting jobs, investing, buying a car, paying off loans etc…. Even all errands are done by me including shoveling the snow and mowing the lawn and doing laundry. Whats so hard? The only thing I got left to do is formally get a will going with an estate lawyer to have that solved. My bro already knows he'll be executor but I need to get on that with the details so he knows exactly what to do when it's time to kick the bucket.

If I really wanted to, I could protest on streets, or do dumb shit at work too causing problems. Why?

Please lock me up with a buncha dames for the next 30 years!!!

Broadcast doesn't have the same blanket "free-speech" protections as other media does. The "air waves" (which are they even a thing, now?) are considered finite and therefore must serve the public interest. (Theoretically, a newspaper can print as many newspapers as it wants--the resources aren't finite, so ...).
An example: A "broadcast" station must give opposing candidates equal time. No exceptions. A newspaper can straight up endorse a candidate.
That's why the FCC was established in the first place--to basically police the airwaves.
It's not a great look, for sure, but just like administrations, the FCC will swing one way to another.

For sure. That's why I said Stern was fined for indecency, profanity etc.

The FCC commissioner didn't speak out and threaten Kimmel over anything of that nature. He spoke out because it was "misinformation" and that in my opinion, is a violation of the first amendment.

Sure, the FCC commissioner apparently only used words, not actions so maybe there isn't actually a case here with Kimmel but he also said he's going to use these same tactics against other broadcasters going forward.

I want to apologize to everyone in this thread. I consider myself left leaning but not ree purple hair left. I think we need to find a middle ground as a country but I have no idea how to do that. Both sides seem very entrenched.

Because sometimes you have to fight for what you think is just?

I have a friend at work from Somalia, hardest working dude I know. Works 12 hours shifts almost every single day. We live in a very affluent, very conservative area, and he says he gets pulled over all the time. I would think that's annoying. I drove without a license for almost 2 years because I was too lazy to get a new one after I lost it and never got pulled even once. He says he doesn't mind at all, in fact he is happy to show them his papers and show them he has nothing to hide. Because, in his own words, "in my country they do not stop and ask you questions, they just shoot you in the head"

I understand where he's coming from.

But is it fair to some young black kid who's getting pulled over all the time for his skin color, despite being on his way to school, work, normal stuff? I don't think so. And eventually you catch one of those kids at a bad time and he gets fed up with this perceived injustice, next thing cop loses control of situation and somebody ends up killed. It's hard to tell that black kid "just comply until things get better" when they've been dealing with it their whole life, and I agree, it's not fair. I just wish people could be more sympathetic, I duno, I'm rambling

Those are words not action. When I have time I have to look into what was actually said. As far as I know people are talking about a podcast interview.

It was the ABC affiliates that threatened to not show Kimmel.

My main issue is that he said he's going to use these same tactics against other broadcasters going forward if they don't fold to his verbal threats.

Pretty sure you need like 2 confirmed miracles.
Miracle 1: He could listen to these unhinged loonies for more than 2 seconds without going off on them.
Miracle 2: Probably turned more people back to faith than anyone living today.

His life parallels what we are told about Jesus in a loooot of ways. Wouldn't be the worst guy to Saint.

The US - and the rest of the western world for that matter - really needs to do something to fix the political divide.

It's going all according to the Keikaku so far https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Foundations_of_Geopolitics

The United Kingdom, merely described as an "extraterritorial floating base of the U.S.", should be cut off from the European Union.
Ukraine (except Western Ukraine) should be annexed by Russia
Russia should use its special services within the borders of the United States and Canada to fuel instability and separatism against neoliberal globalist Western hegemony, such as, for instance, provoke "Afro-American racists" to create severe backlash against the rotten political state of affairs in the current present-day system of the United States and Canada. Russia should "introduce geopolitical disorder into internal American activity, encouraging all kinds of separatism and ethnic, social, and racial conflicts, actively supporting all dissident movements – extremist, racist, and sectarian groups, thus destabilizing internal political processes in the U.S. It would also make sense simultaneously to support isolationist tendencies in American politics".

Such a shame that the bomb in his car only killed his deranged daughter. That, right there, is a true fascist.

This is the strategy that Russia and other powers are using against the West and people still believe that US or European problems are "local issues". It's infuriating that the media and politicians fail to acknowledge it.

This to me, it's not against left or right its about dividing the society and yeah you can call it "the outraged leftist saying that" but to me this has more truth than any religious leader.

Calling out someone in your neighbour is not like patrolling the street tho.

The attitude of doing nothing...what do you think they would achieve by being vocal?

Hey guys look, most gay, lesbian and trans are not like these nutjobs.

Normal, well adjusted people already know that, and the right extremists\real racists are not gonna give a fuck about their statement.

So i don't know what you think they are gonna achieve by just saying that they are different from the crazy pack.

And sure as hell no gay or lesbian is gonna patrol the street to stop the dangerous ones because again, it's not their damn job.
Well, someone has to achieve something. The world has told straight white people they aren't allowed to criticise people, they get called nazi and are allowed to be killed by the nutters, and they cheer it.

You don't want the government ruling to stop the radicals because trust me, those laws aren't going to go how you think they will.

You can't expect police to target the trans community in case they may be extreme or not (because race relations in the US are already super great with the Police).

So who should stand up and say something?

You've mentioned why they shouldn't, but your alternative was that the government should... is that really better than people just simply calling out the bad people in their community?

Like i dunno if i was in team Yellow and then I saw on Twitter someone who was team Yellow calling to kill people. I'd very quickly come out and say "yo, that dudes mental, he is not a team Yellow type of person".

Why is that such an insane thing to do?

Honestly, there's no logic in not doing it, the only reasoning to do it is either if you agree with the statement or you are indifferent to the statement which is essentially agree with it.
