EXCLUSIVE: Warner Bros is trying to ready its DC Comics stalwart Superman to soar again on the Big Screen, and the studio has turned to Chris Nolan to mentor development of the movie. Our insiders say that the brains behind rebooted Batman has been asked to play a "godfather" role and ensure The Man Of Steel gets off the ground after a 3 1/2-year hiatus. Nolan's leadership of the project can set it in the right direction with the critics and the fans, not to mention at the box office. Besides, Nolan is considered something of a god at Warner Bros and has a strong relationship with the studio after the success of Batman Begins and The Dark Knight. Though he wasn’t obligated to do so, he gave the studio first crack at his spec script Inception, and Warner Bros was able to buy it before other studios even got a sniff. While Nolan completes that Leonardo DiCaprio-starrer for a July 16th release, he's also hatched an idea for Warner Bros' third Batman installment. Now his brother and frequent collaborator Jonah Nolan, and David Goyer who co-wrote Batman Begins and penned the story for The Dark Knight, are off scripting it. (See 'FlashForward' Showrunner Exits For Features).

Let us emphasize that Superman 3.0 is in the early stages of development. And we doubt Nolan would direct. This wouldn't be a sequel to Superman Returns but a completely fresh franchise. As one of our insiders reassures: “It would definitely not be a followup to Superman Returns." Nolan coming on board follows a hiatus period for Superman after that 2006 reboot as the studio tried to figure out whether or not to make a sequel to that version starring Brandon Routh directed by Bryan Singer. As recently as this summer, Warner Bros was still contemplating how to proceed. We were told that "Bryan or Brandon are not completely out of it yet. But Warner Bros doesn't have a handle yet on it, either. [Producer] Jon Peters is trying to make something happen since he stands to benefit financially. But they [the studio] need to hear a great story that makes sense." Another insider explained to us, "We know what we don't want to do. But we don't know what we want to do. We learned a lot from the last movie, and we want to get it right this time."

I'm both freaking excited and cautious over Batman 3.

I think he set the bar a tad bit too high by throwing in The Joker and Two Face into the second film. Now when he goes to the inevitable Riddler or somebody else it will just feel like a down-grade. I'm assuming the authorities and people will also be the 'villains' of the third film though.

Also Superman doesn't need the dark and gritty treatment, he just needs a good movie again. The first one with Reeves was good, and I liked the second one too. Bryan Singer's stupid ass tried to replicate it for our time and it just doesn't work that way. Bring us a kick ass Superman, but also not too dark or anything.

Sucks that Singer fucked the franchise, because Routh can't play Superman anymore. He's a good Supes.

Nolan "mentoring" it? Hmm...

Superman return shit on every thing that was superman.......

This is what did it for me...............

Superman has a kid............:lol :lol :lol :lol :lol :lol :lol

and he's has to talk to his baby mama to see his child.....

I don't see what's wrong with making an SR sequel. If they know what they did wrong, why don't they just try to fix that and make a great movie? SR itself was essentially a reboot, and I don't like the idea of following it with another reboot.

i cant wait for the flood of superman avatars on neogaf in a few years when this gets rolling, the hype will be unreal w/nolan on board :lol

SR killed the franchise.

WB needs to get working on a Superman movie RIGHT NOW, before those rights issues crop up again.

It'll start heating up soon.

I could take or leave Singer, but I thought Routh was a good Clark/Superman. Give him another crack at it.

They'll rush it to market and will fuck it up, again.

Honestly, I would say fuck rebooting Superman. It's a dumb idea. Instead Nolan should complete Batman 3, and then go straight into World's Finest. Everyone knows who Superman is, you don't need a movie to "build up" to it or anything. Just make it. From there you can continue Superman movies using the same tone set in that movie, plus having both Batman and Superman on screen in the same movie will definitely give it much more exposure and popularity than a Superman "reboot" would alone.

Come on WB, do the right thing!

The airplane scene in Returns was fucking badass. Why couldn't the rest of the film had been like that? (I'm not asking for all action, Norton's Hulk put me to sleep by doing that).

I wonder who they would pick for director. My money's on Blomkamp or the guy that's making the Alien prequel.

Because other than Routh, the castng was a disaster.

Can we get a real actress for Lois Lane this time, please?

Bah...I want someone to kill Clark's parents to have him go ape shit the whole movie. Badguy superman is the best.

Returns failed, not only that it has multiple things that it put into existence that would bog down sequel attempts.
I for one am glad that they are forgetting the "Supes had a kid" gimmick, as well as the Lois is married.
The whole Supes left earth and went all emo could be worked with, but the rest are deal breakers.

Agreed. In fact most of the cast was pretty good

Too bad they were given shit to work with. How that crap made it into the script is beyond me(superman is a stalker now? really? and he has a kid? wait its a sequel to a movie that already had a sequel??)

I want a 70 minute superman returns review now:lol

After watching Season 4 of Dexter, I think Routh's girlfriend would have been a very good Lois...hell she even played a reporter on Dexter. :lol

Am I the only one who would actually like to see Burton's Superman?

The ideas and concept art just sounded so batshit insane. And it was at the least a hell of a lot more interesting than what Singer did with it.

Also Nic Cage as Superman and Johnny Depp as Luthor :D That would have been entertaining.

Nothing against the Donner Superman films, but I think it's time for a fresh interpretation.

With Goyer scripting the movie again, I wouldn't leap to conclusions with villains. He really wants to use villains that are not mainstream. He's the one that convinced Nolan to use Scarecrow in Batman Begins.

Oh man I hope they reboot superman to high school, that would be so cool!
I look forward to Batman 3 and letting another villain besides the joker for change get AAA treatment.

Nah it was going to be Nic Cage :lol Johnny Depp was going to be Luthor, and they hadn't cast Brainiac yet.

The concept art was boss, and it was definitely not going to be some pussy ass 'realistic' Superman

Superman Lives

Well his batman is better than Nolan's batman....

I think it's pretty close actually. I like Keaton's Batman and Bale's Wayne.

The look of both films are unique. I think it's much closer than the fanboys would want it to be. In terms of sequels though I think TDK is better than Returns, but then I heard Burton was strongarmed by the studio for the second one.

Terrible picture of her.

She's too sexual looking to play Louis. However, she really surprised me with her acting skills in Dexter.
