Rebooting Superman already? I thought that's what Superman Returns was. FWIW, I kind of liked it. It was a great demo movie for Blu-ray early and the airplane scene was pretty awesome. The guy they got for Superman was good, Kevin Spacey played himself but did okay, etc. It was nowhere near as godawful as Spidey 3 and emo Spidey.

Superman Returns was a continuation of the Reeve Superman movies.

You know, the more I think about this, anything less than John Hamm in a 30's period Superman movie is going to be disappointing to me.

I like how just the "rumor" (pretty obvious this was leaked on purpose) of Nolan working on Batman 3 and Superman has killed Sony's Spider-Man 3D announcement.

You do realize Nolan will be in post on Inception until about April or May this year right? There is no way to ramp up for B3 and release it in 2011. It will be a June or July 2012 release. Besides, summer 2011 is already pretty jam packed.

What's coming out in 2011?

In July 2012 we're already getting Star Trek 2 and Spider-man (blech, but it'll be big nonetheless.)

Nolan is back for Batman 3
Fuck yeah Batman.

mentoring a Superman reboot
A Superman movie should adapt the first couple of episodes of S:TAS. That'll introduce Brainiac and also have him as the villain by the end of it. Luthor can be in the movie, but just like...an ominous presence.

They can fight later in a sequel where Luthor creates a Brainiac armor from a destroyed Brainiac, that resembles his Apokoliptian armor from the comics.

A Superman movie needs some godly fights. Returns sucked cause Luthor's plan was idiotic, Superman would never leave Earth unless it was protected, he didn't fight anyone and he would never knock someone up like that. Also the Jesus allegories were dumb. And I have to say fuck that period piece talk. The world needs to see how Superman can still be awesome in modern day. It still works in the comics.

I liked John Byrne's rebooted Bizarro from ages ago. It's in the realm of possibility (For a Nolan style world) and is preset for some pretty phenomenal battle scenes. It would include Luthor and actually have some action for a change from the last Superman movie where the best scene was Superman vs. a broken airplane.

Plus in the comic book, Bizarro kept trying to change into Clark Kent so secret identity suspense is built in!:lol

Actually, the one with the guy with the Kryptonite heart was pretty good too

So Chris Nolan is now like WB's Bruce Timm of live-action Batman, huh? Only, coming off of Memento/Insomnia instead of Tiny Toons.

The same Batman in DC Comics is busy solving the horrors of Gotham, while taking on the White Martians in the Justice League.

I have faith in Nolan to make Supes work in his universe faithfully to the character. They ARE opposites and should feel like oil and water together. Its supposed to work that way.

The article mentions it

Seriously, all those reasons suck.

1) He can be complicated, doesn't have to be dark.

IE, Kingdom Come. I'm not really interested in the same old same old Superman. Nolan can give him some flair, without going overboard.

2)That is an awful reasoning. So because Nolan does Batman (who isn't really much of a detective in the Nolan-verse) he'll turn Superman into a detective :lol ?

3)Fucking Amen.

4)Fucking Amen.

5)Already covered.

The person who wrote that article is someone who wakes up and masturbates to Superman daily.

1. Superman isn't a dark hero. No shit.

2. Superman isn't a detective. No shit?

3. They're throwing out current continuity. No shit...it is terrible.

4. Nolan is great on story, but terrible on staying true to its history. No shit...it's a film adaptation.

5. Superman is science fiction. Nolan is real world. This doesn't make any sense. It's shit.

SHIT.

Superman isn't the icon he once was. The idea that EVERY person knows the origin of Superman is foolish as he hasn't been relevant since at least the 90s in major media. I mean he isn't my favorite but I believe he is important and should be handled correctly.

No, Nolan can't do Superman (as we know him). He can reinvent him, but it may end up making the fans crazy.
...this doesn't make any sense either. So Nolan is incapable of OVERSEEING a movie to satisfy fans? I guess you are right. If Krypto isn't in the movie then no sale for me.

Eh......

Superman is still probably the biggest fictional/pop culture icon in history.

I'm sure Nolan will make Superman great, I'm pretty excited to see how much he is involved. But ultimately its on whoever they choose as the director.

I'm pretty fucking happy we're going to see Batman 3 in the near future, so what movie is supposed to come out first.

Great news about Batman if true. Now Nolan just has to convince Joseph Gordon Levitt to take over the Joker role and we'll be good to go. Superman I'm less interested in, I actually think they cast the lead role for Returns very well, so I hope they bring Routh back for the next one, even if they shuffle the deck with the franchise.

There is at the very least 5 Disney theme parks with Mickey plastered on every tshirt, go kartt, and corndog. Domestically and Internationally I would say it is hard to beat him and Superman isnt very close IMO.

Jon Hamm as Superman in 30's means that I am going to have to quit 'The Contest'. Hard.
Mario's beaten him

Mickey's the icon of animation
Mario's the icon of games
Superman's the icon of comics

so they all have their places in history

anyways the only way the Nolan involvement will interest me is if they're thinking about unifying DC's modern film worlds

The only thing I hope they keep from Superman Returns is Brandon Routh....though they may be tempted not to in order to further differentiate movies and emphasize that this is a reboot. I think they can ignore the previous movie while still keeping Routh on board. I can't picture a better actor among well known established ones. The Christopher Reeve Superman look is still the best.

With that said, I think it's great that Nolan is overseeing this. I hope they do follow Batman's style and make the Superman movie a little darker/grittier than the campy movies we had before. Superman I/II were awesome for the time but Batman Begins/Dark Knight hit the mark to where DC movies should be right now (there would even be the opportunity for cross overs if they so choose).

Braniac would make the most sense as a major villain, though slightly lesser villains like Metallo would be great for the sake of one on one fighting. Darkseid would be amazing, but they probably couldn't pull him off - and probably better to leave him for further down the line if they get the series in order, though they can certainly leave hints and a setup towards him.

Wtf was Singer thinking with the kid....

mjc said:
I could take or leave Singer, but I thought Routh was a good Clark/Superman. Give him another crack at it.

Agreed.

It was Bosworth who was a HORRID fucking choice as Lane. I would have preferred Teri Hatcher. Lois and Clark was a great show.

SR's BIGGEST problem (and there were quite a few) was the lack of action more than anything.

Batman 3 will rock though.

I think the more Routh has aged over the last 4+ years, the more he looks perfect for the role.

Give him another shot, WB :(

Good point. I always thought he looked a little young in Superman Returns. Hard to believe it's already been 4 years but he should look even better for the part being 30 right now.

I'm not saying he isn't big he is very identifiable. I'm saying most young people don't know much about his story or history.

Routh is not going to be Superman.

I'm still disagreeing with you. Every person on the planet know the whole deal.

Last Son, dying planet, green rocks, Kansas, powers, Lois Lane, yadda yadda yadda.

It'd be great if Nolan finally confirmed this announcement with his own mouth.

Or said anything to the press, ever.

No they don't. In fact I actually asked a kid today (maybe around six) and he had no clue about anything else except for the characters name. He could tell me about Batman, Spiderman and Hulk though with no problem. The Superman franchise just hasn't been relevant fully in years. You had the 90s cartoon and the 00s film which only gained minimal exposure to new audiences.

Dear Nolan bros:

Please get Asylum's script (Batman vs Superman, featuring Luthor and Joker) and make it into the big screen.

Thank you.

I cant wait to create the official thread for this one. I havent been able to troll DM much since....oh wait, Avatar isnt that long ago!

The problems in Superman's current status can only lead us to some conclusions:

1) DC's focus in the past decade or so has been Batman.

2) Comics failing as a medium against newer forms of entertainment

3) Non-comics Superman media (videogames, movie, TV shows, suck or were mediocre). In any event they do not (or rarely) maximize Superman's creative potential.

4) DC doesn't know how to handle their most famous icon for a variety of reasons.

5) Can't even set his comics universe straight (ex: Superboy era/LoSH or no LoSH), though they've been working on that.

6) As DC's Universe grows and evolves less dependent on real-world culture Superman's significance is diminished against other characters.

7) Siegels and Schusters still fighting DC over rights, limiting what DC has been able to do. For what it's worth I support the Siegels/Schusters.

And yes, the Siegel/Schusters case is a huge deal. This is also pressuring WB to make a new movie by 2011 otherwise they can get sued by them again.

Overall though, whether he is known to small children is debatable, but he is a symbol known across the world. If not by children, then adults.
