State of the market
Projected U.S. total spending on video game hardware, content and accessories fell 7% during August 2024 versus a year ago, to $4.1B. A 5% increase in Mobile content spending was offset by declines across other areas.

Hardware
August video game hardware spending dropped 36% when compared to a year ago, to $208 million. All current generation console hardware platforms declined by at least 34% when compared to a year ago, with Switch showing the sharpest year-on-year fall (-41%).

PlayStation 5 again led the month’s hardware market in unit and dollar sales, with Xbox Series ranking 2nd across both measures.
Software
Madden NFL 25 was the best-selling video game of August 2024 - the 25th consecutive year in which a new Madden NFL franchise release was the best-selling title in its release month. This streak began with the release of Madden NFL 2001 in August of 2000.
Mobile
Sensor Tower: Top 10 mobile games by U.S. consumer spend in August and rank change vs July: MONOPOLY GO!, Roblox, Royal Match, Candy Crush Saga, Last War: Survival (+1), Whiteout Survival (+1), Township (+2), Coin Master, Pokémon GO (-4), and Call of Duty Mobile (+2).

“US mobile gaming spend still shows growth compared to the same month last year in August 2024, though the same metric is flat month over month,” said Samuel Aune of Sensor Tower. “We don't see any huge changes in the US top ten in August 2024." "Pokémon GO came down from the highs of Pokémon GO Fest 2024 in July 2024, allowing Last War: Survival, Whiteout Survival, and Township to move up the rankings. Township hit a new peak in monthly US consumer spend in August 2024," said Aune. Aune continued… "Another highlight is MONOPOLY GO!'s fall off in the past few months. While it is still firmly in 1st place in US consumer spend, it has declined about 32% in US consumer spend compared to its peak in March 2024.”
Accessories
Consumer spending on Accessories in August fell 3% when compared to a year ago, to $173M. Growth in the Remote Play Device segment (PlayStation Portal), was offset by a 10% year-on-year decline in Gamepad spending. The PS5 DualSense Wireless Controller in Midnight Black was August’s best-selling accessory in dollar sales, while PlayStation Portal remained the best-seller for 2024 year-to-date.

Headset & headphone spending during the 2024 year-to-date period ending August finished 10% higher than a year ago. The PS5 Pulse Elite Wireless Headset White is the best-selling headset in year-to-date consumer spending.

(Wukong) didn't even show up. I don't know if that's because it wasn't tracked at all (with not even a mention about it) or if it just didn't chart.
It's digital only
Game Science probably not shared data (or even was not approached by Circana for numbers)

I get it, it must help some of yall sleep better at night. Congrats.

But...looking for a game that Sony literally unlaunched is kinda weird.

I put it as a joke but in fairness we never really got a sense as to how well it sold on PlayStation. I assume to crack the top 20 for the month would require only 10,000 units or so, possibly less. Would need to go back and seen from when we used to get units provided for games, just to see what the drop off looks like, but I know once you get out of the top 10 it becomes trivial.

Didnt it do like 90% of it sales in Asia? Wouldnt be suprised if it theres barely any mention of it sales-wise in the west.
It's digital-only and it's a Chinese publisher, so I'm uncertain how much of their data they're sharing with Circana. Even if the game had sold 90% of its copies in Asia, it would have charted.

It's not physical only in that it doesn't have a disc (not in that it isn't sold at retailers). From what I understand the Physical release has digital activation codes but would still be tracked by retailers. What's more strange though is that there wasn't even a mention of the game.

I figured it wasn’t tracks but still expected to see it in the Steam engagement tracker, even if the engagement is US only. I don’t believe they’ve disclosed how they report this metric though, whether they use a panel of gamers or have a data feed from Steam. Seems to be missing something though.

Good PS5 month, although they're not officially cutting prices Sony is starting promotions around the world so sales should get stronger. Also PS5 Pro and the holiday season are coming.

Npd has been absurdly late with this report, so much that we should get the September one in two weeks...if they don't delay it.

It was top downloads on PSN for August in US, so it least digitally it performed very well
It's digital-only
That doesn't matter, though, does it? Even if digital only, it should 100% be ahead of some of the games in those charts.

Physical only on PC with Steam code
Nobody cares about PC physical sales...

Just going off my own anecdotal evidence....I'm in the US:

Launch day, week it was hovering around the 30's, 40's when you set the store to Best Selling on the console.

A few weeks later it was in the damn 90's.

It was a colossal failure. Thats why we saw Sony do something that was rarely to never done before. I'm surprised they didn't just act like they forgot and let it stay on stores.

IF it's sales included.
But Circana remark about "for digital only data that was shared is included" is in place

The physical release as far as I’m aware is only for special editions.
Game Science does not share data to Circana.

it doesn’t even have a proper physical release though. And yeah, it very likely has something to do with the publisher not sharing the data with Circana. Absolutely no way it got outsold by Visions of Mana.
