Or is it just one of Phil's balls in my throat?

Do you think it reaches the WW number or not?

Nice. The switch is going to end up the greatest selling console of all time.

Sony will no longer have that feather in their cap. Nor do they deserve it since they turned into a commiefornia company.

Was just talking about this with my kid. Given the INCREDIBLE success of the Switch, will the switch2 ever come close? Or is it too similar to the switch and there isn't enough reason to upgrade?

Nintendo is wondering the same thing which is why they are sitting on it until Mario Kart 9 and other megaton bombs are ready. I expect the first two years of Switch 2 to be fucking epic.

It has the potential to sell more because of how many more big third party games Switch 2 will get due to the increase in compute power. The likes of CP2077, ER, RDRII single player wise then Warzone and much better versions of Fortnite and Apex multiplayer wise will help massively too.

Yeah people are really underestimating how much Nintendo's "once per console" releases can push sales. You lead off with Mario Kart and 3D Mario year one, then Animal Crossing and Smash Bros. year 2, then hit with a 3D Zelda in year 3? They'll be pushing 70 million consoles at that point anyways and can cruise the rest of the way.

They'll be hurt by higher price and no COVID boost, so they'll need to offset that with better third party support and new IP.

What a beast, the whole hybrid concept was genius.

Tech wise they are really stretching it though. Switch 2 can't come soon enough. I have barely used my unit in the past couple years.

My favorite console of all time. Made me a lifelong Nintendo fan again and lover of handheld/hybrid console gaming. Switch 2 is going to be an awesome gen. So excited for it 🤩

Still 1 DVD per house.
The point is the PS2 was revolutionary in pushing multimedia content of that level for the first time on a console during the DVD boom. It's not just a "console" as was said in the post I was quoting. It's the fucking PlayStation 2.

Good for the Switch and good for Nintendo. No wonder they don't want to move on to the next one so quickly since it keeps selling haha. And, how/why are people turning this into a console war?

PS2 reached this milestone long ago. The market was different and the market today is different. Switch did not exist then... the PS2 is irrelevant now. Why do ya'll care so much? If Switch has beaten the old record set by PS2, so what?

And they will be hurt by games taking longer to make. They already had some big droughts with Switch.
Their first party investments and growth in number of partner studios should somewhat offset the increase in development times.

They had some slow periods with Switch (H1 2018 and H1 2024) but I'd say the lock down months of 2020 were the only time they had an actual drought. What droughts were you thinking of?

The novelty of the Switch is over, along with the fact that the market is being flooded with handhelds. Sony and Microsoft haven't even thrown their hats in the ring yet. The Switch 2 will be a huge success, but not as big as its predecessor.

honestly that's always been the case, a fair number of these people aren't even really fanboys of the other systems as much as they just hate PlayStation (some of them are former Sega fanboys who blame Sony for 'killing' Dreamcast)

I should have used the term you used, slow periods. That said, even with growth, I still see it being slower but not as slow as it could have been.

So they can't let go of their delusions. Weird.

My prediction is It will surpass 160 million if Nintendo supports it with new Switch titles for a few more years.

Generally they have released roughly 1 game per month on Switch, and I can see them sticking to that schedule with Switch 2 (maybe a little slower).

They are making a huge investment in EPD and growing the number of independent studios they partner with.

This
They'll magically discover another 5 million out of nowhere, lol
And even if they did, Switch's success is already worth more. PS2 was sold for many more years, had no serious competition for many years and had huge price cuts while Switch was stable in price.
