Civilization V |OT| of Losing My Religion, And I Feel Fine...

Definitely does sound like your graphics card is over heating, getting screen artefacts is a big indicator of this. Try running some temp monitoring program whilst playing the game, preferably something that can log to file if you're going to crash before you can check, something simple like GPUZ will do the job.

God I was hoping it wouldn't be a case of overheating, but thanks for the tip, I'll try that.

Ugh, first time Civ player and Steam user here, and I've been running into game-freezes almost 50% of the time. I hope someone can shed some light on what I'm doing wrong as I've failed on correctly googling a solution.

I'm playing on a brand new Asus RoG G73jh - i7 720 - 1GB ATI 5870 - 8GB ram

Started steam, updated my drivers, and fired up the game for the first time. Cranked all the video settings high to test how my computer would perform.

The first game I tried was on a huge map (as suggested by my long time civ-fan friend).

The issue: after playing for a few minutes, during which everything was going on smoothly, some graphical anomalies started appearing, like weird tearing effects in parts/tiles/buttons when highlighted, then the screen started flickering, seconds later the screen went black, and the sound was stuck on a high pitched effect. Obviously, I couldn't do anything about it other than hard rebooting my machine.

Next try: went with default video settings, loaded up my save on the huge map and started playing. A couple of minutes later: same thing thing happened, only this time it wasn't a dark screen but horizontally striped with all shades of gray, just to annoy me more I presume.

I've read many online accounts about issues with the game and yet most were crashes to windows, which isn't what I'm facing here.

Some of the more popular solutions that were suggested:
- Skipping the intro video to avoid the game crashing on upon start up and during the video (haven't had a problem with this)
- Playing the game in DX9 mode (I've tried many demanding X10 and 11 games without any problems)
- Avoiding huge maps as they more susceptible to running into game-breaking bugs (understandable, and hopefully will be fixed soon)
- Lowering the resolution (was 1080) or playing in windowed mode. (again, haven't had any problems with that resolution when playing demanding games).

I have no problems with trying any of these fixes, but since my machine isn't that outdated and was purchased merely 4 months ago, the most important thing I'd like to know is how common this particular issue I'm facing is, and whether it's on my end (hardware or driver issue) or a game bug that is hopefully going to be addressed int the future?

Obviously I'm hoping for the latter, if this is caused by my machine's shortcomings I'm gonna be heartbroken.

Edit: Sorry for all the rambling, hopefully some of this made sense and could inspire someone to offer some much needed help. I'd really appreciate it.

No-one can play huge maps and marathon time in this game without endless end-of-turn times and other glitches. It's happening to the most powerful PC's on the market today. It's horribly coded and optimised at this point, not to mention all the other game breaking bugs that it still has.

Have they released a patch for this game? I bought it a while back and I was able to go into lobbies/create games but when I try to launch, the game freezes.

Before getting too caught up in if it's a hardware issue:

http://forums.2kgames.com/showthread.php?87763-DX10-11-graphics-freeze-DX9-works-ok

There's an 11 page thread of people having game freezes (including myself) when playing in DX10/11 mode. DX9 mode works fine, it's a game issue, assuming this is what's happening to you.

You mentioned you'd be willing to try playing in DX9 mode, you should try and at least see if it freezes there also, if it doesn't it's probably the above issue.

I'm not very experienced in what's acceptable and what's not in terms of GPU temps, are these numbers too bad? this is what I got when I tried running the game with GPUZ in the background (and yes, it froze again).

Code:
        Date , GPU Core Clock [MHz] , GPU Memory Clock [MHz] , GPU Temperature [°C] , Fan Speed [%] , GPU Load [%] , Fan Speed [RPM] , GPU Temp. #1 [°C] , GPU Temp. #2 [°C] , GPU Temp. #3 [°C] , VDDC [V] ,

Ahhhh, that's good to know. That link made my day, thanks man.

EDIT: Um, having said that, the GPU load is constantly 0, it doesn't look like this was going whilst the game was running, unless I'm completely misreading it. I can't really say if 65 is high for a laptop to be idling at, I don't have much experience with gaming laptops.

ugh, I'm gonna try this again. I think I may have pasted the wrong part of the log (it's bigger than what the character limit allows).

Right, I just tried running GPUZ myself (I usually use MSI Afterburner), and it didn't seem to be recording GPU load, as in it didn't go above 0%, although that could be because I'm using a new card and it might not be supported yet. In any case the temperature was recorded fine.

Well, I tried playing another game and it went smoothly for about 20 (which is far more than the previous attempts), and these are the latest number I logged before the game froze :\

Again, if someone could clarify whether those numbers are considered very high and consequently usually result in overheating-related game freezes, I'd appreciate it.

From now until this is somehow solved, I'm gonna play on DX9 mode :\

Under normal circumstances the temp floats around 65c, so I assumed the rise to 88 wasn't that bad. I couldn't be wrong though.

Well no doubt it's getting hot, but maxing out at 90, I'm reluctant now to think that your GPU overheating is the problem, I'm pretty sure 90 is fine for most graphics cards, though I don't know if it's different for mobile cards. If running in Dx9 mode has solved the issue though, then it may well be another issue.

Hollllly shit. As you guys probably know (or at least assume) the devs have been hard at work on the latest patch for Civ 5. It's STILL not done yet but they just gave a new update list of alllllll that's going into the new patch here

Some things that caught my eye in particular

New Building: Circus Maximus (National Wonder for happiness track). (Added 12/3)

New Building: National Treasury (National Wonder for economic track). (Added 12/3)

Unhappiness beyond a certain point breeds rebels within your empire, based on the number of cities a player has. (Added 12/3)

3 new additional Natural Wonders added to gameplay, with accompanying “rarity” code. (Added 12/3)

but there's SOOOO much there both in the "just announced" fixes that are coming, and those that have been previously announced you may or may not have seen. Can't WAIT for the patch and to see what ELSE it will bring!

That is really awesome. Is there any word if Mac is getting these patches tomorrow as well? I know Mac is like, a patch behind, so I was curious.

What kind of macs are you guys running it on? Not sure if my 2 or 3 year old mbp will handle it.

I have a three year old MBP, and it runs fine in early game, but it chugs like fuck once I hit Renaissance and onwards. I live with it because it's a turn based game and still playable, but it hurts. :(

Well first, the new patch isn't even coming yet, they're apparently STILL working on it and adding to it and it has no ETA. Beyond that I pretty much am assuming the mac game will be identical to the PC game as it stands now but that's a total assumption on my part.

Oh, I thought the "Added 12/3" was in regards to when the feature was being added. I totally forgot today was the 3rd and not the 2nd.

Btw, I've been having issues with cash in late game. I'm trying to avoid autocracy for the unit maintenance discount (just because of what I'm TRYING to build), but I'm hemorrhaging cash in late game, and I end up winning merely because I hit utopia project or take out the last civ before I hit zero.

My problem is definitely unit maintenance, and I have a feeling it's related to having a large standing army, but I'm always paranoid of civs steamrolling me unless I amass serious numbers on their borders.

Does anyone know if civs abstain from invading based on numbers, tech, or a combo of both?

No big deal, I'm guessing it won't be too much longer though because the full list is freaking HUGE, there's about 50 items they're adding, tweaking, or totally revamping as it is! And there's MORE coming!

Yeah, it's time I start looking up my card and reports of overheating. Thanks for the help guys.

Not sure if I'm reading this right but that log file seems to be saying your fan speed is only 30% during these periods? You might want to consider getting hold of a utility that will let you manually crank that to 100% while you're playing games. Not sure if SpeedFan does GPU fans but it's probably worth a look.

I have like 36 achievments to go......one of them is the train every unit in the game.........I have no idea what I have yet to train so what the hell do I do lol

Have you played as all the different civs and trained their unique units?

I'm unbelievably excited for this patch, so many of the changes sound really great :D

Anyone still playing this?

New patch is looking great. I think it might be time to boot this up again. ICS is looking to be somewhat addressed due to the happiness limitation of buildings to match population in a city. Also the tweaks to Meritocracy and the forbidden palace mixed with the tweaks to maritime city states seem to address the monotony of victories. Maybe I might actually have to strategize instead of abusing ICS or imposing rules on myself to make it more fun.

Why is strategize flagged as misspelled? Last I checked, it was a real word.

You might as well just post them here:
[AI]

[TACTICAL AI]

* Proper evaluation of which enemy units can reach my units next turn.
* Sorting enemy targets (within a class) by damage.
* Combine bombardment fire from cities with other ranged fire where possible.
* Never target a city for a ranged attack when they are already at (or going to be at) 1 health.
* Have the tactical AI be more aggressive about fortifying units that aren't moving anyways.
* Make all forms of guarding improvements the lowest priority tactical AI moves.
* Don't mark tiles adjacent to enemy at sea as good for flank attacks -- there is no flanking at sea.
* Update to tactical AI pillaging code - now prioritize enemy land resources and trade routes (never regular mines or farms). Always uses the check to make sure AI is not trying to pillage in an enemy dominance zone. Barbarians will still target everything.
* Never use ranged units to provide flank bonuses.
* Reduce chance of AI civs making "suicide" attacks.
* Changes to better protect the capital or any city with an enemy within 5 tiles.

[VICTORY]

* AI will be more aggressive about pursuing Diplo victory (bribing City States) if they are wealthy.
* AI will be more aggressive about building Spaceship parts when going for Science victory.

[CIVS]

* Tweak a few leader settings to be more likely to use their traits.
* Adjust Napoleon to make more likely to go for culture.

[COMBAT/UNITS]

* AI will not use Horse as defenders on hills as much.
* AI will often build more defensive troops.
* AI will more aggressively hunt barbs in the early game.
* Slightly more naval units.
* AI will now build ranged and mobile units more in line with the flavor settings for the team - in general, this means more mobile units.
* AI now builds, deploys, and uses air units more effectively.
* Allow AI to build more units if above Prince.
* AI will be more likely to build and bring siege units in a city attack.
* Better nuke targeting by AI.
* Won't build AA if no air threat.
* Allow AI or automated human explorers to move to edge of sight range and then explore again.

[EXPLORATION/EXPANSION]

* AI will emphasize getting an Ocean going explorer unit when the time comes.
* AI slightly more likely to settle off home continent.
* AI should colonize other continents regularly.
* AI second wave expansion more aggressive.
* Improve the AI's chances of setting up protected bombard attacks.
* Settlers: should handle watery maps better.
* AI will grab goody huts on other land masses.
* AI will grab empty barb camps more often.

[WORKERS/CITY AI]

* Large Cities should be more willing to build happiness and gold buildings.
* Workers prioritize repair builds higher than other builds.
* AI will be more likely to build a wall on any city that was an original capital.
* Builder tasking now calculates yields appropriately during golden ages and weighs tiles according to how much stuff they provide overall as well as their maximum yield of a certain type.
* More likely to build up economy early.
* Multiple worker AI improvements.

[MISC]

Awesum. It was pretty obvious that the mongols were going to be added as they did not exist as a city state. Speaking of which, which other historical nations are conspicuous by their absence that you guys can think of? I would say tons of American ones, like Inca, Maya, Sioux, Apache, etc., as well as the Spanish and Byzantine Empire.

Totally called Spanish and Inca :D

7.49 is a lot more than I was expecting though. Should be about $5 IMO.

The combat AI still seems pretty bad. Genghis Khan just moved two catapults right next to my clearly visible pikemen :lol
You're sure they were visible to his units before he moved them?

They were two spaces away in open terrain and he had a few cavalry running around. I can't say for sure but I'd be very surprised if they weren't visible.
