COMICS! |OT| October 2015. ...Are just something we do while the patch downloads.

Doesn't have to be. I stopped reading comics for years (DC was my go to) around the same time the Grant Morrison rebranded JLA, and Young Justice was introduced. So really anything between then and now (minus Kingdom Come, which I have)

Just finished the latest ASM, some thoughts
-Dan Slott does seem to have a better plan for the series now, I starting to think that the last volume was just a filler Slott had to put together knowing that it would have to end again.
-Final pages were good,
someone collecting villains probably leading to a Sinister Six is always a good thing
-Some classic Spider-Man team up banter in this, feels good
-I completely agree with all the Iron Man comparisons but that's not a bad thing
-Only thing missing was more Peter Parker life in this issue

There are no anime girls in that book :( . couldnt you have gotten another figma or statue?

Grant Morrison is kind of like anime so it works out for me.

Had the biggest smile when I saw what was under the dust jacket. What a great spread! Gonna reread this after I finish Batman Inc I think.

I'm like two pages into this week's Batman and Robin Eternal and I just don't get Red Hood now. Is he supposed to be cool?

Is this what kids find cool now? Am I now uncool? Have I lost touch with today's youth?

So because I am a completely insane person, I have been marathoning through the entire Ultimate universe. Going into this, I knew a lot of it was going to be garbage, but what the hell.

It actually started out not that bad. I love Ultimate Spider-man. Ultimates volume 1 (and to a lesser extent volume 2) were really good. Early Ultimate Fantastic Four was pretty good through the Bendis/Millar/Ellis issues. Xmen was average. There were some interesting ideas, mixed in with some pretty stupid stuff. Really the only thing that I outright hated was whenever Greg Land would show up with his porn tracing. There was a FF arc and then the Ultimate Powers, which was just the worst.

Now I have finally got to the point where Jeph Loeb has shown up and it is just terrible. I am 3 issues into Ultimates Volume three and everything about this is just non-sense. Everyone is out of character compared to how they were being written up until this point. Stuff just seems to be happening randomly and the dialog/writing just makes me want to never read comics again. Iron Man all of sudden has armor that just looks like he painted his skin, instead of the big bulky armor they had been using up until this point (not sure if that was Loeb or the artist?). And the worst thing is that I am going to have to read Ultimatum after this, which is likely going to be even worse.

If it wasn't for the fact that I sort of want to read the Hickman stuff and see how the story progress for Richards to become the Maker I think I would just stop right now. But instead I will continue to torture myself.

The other thought I though about this was how all of the female characters outfits have regressed the longer the Ultimate universe has gone on (or just lack of consistency). In the early issues, Sue Storm started with a normal outfit, then Land showed up, so every scene with her she apparently decides zipping it up is too much trouble and it is easier to fight villains in her bra. From there her outfit changes every arc based on the art Black Widow actually had a pretty cool outfit that actually seemed to make sense for a shadow operative, although at the end was just wearing a tank top that stopped at the breasts. By the end of volume 2 of the Ultimates, it was getting pretty pathetic. Jennifer Walters is wearing a normal blouse and something surprises here, which naturally causes all of the buttons on her shirt to rip off and her tits fly out.

I guess it was a product of the times (even if it wasn't that long ago) and I was kind of spoiled since I came into comics in the last few years when DC/Marvel was moving away from this.

Read me some new Vertigo tonight. The Twilight Children #1 was quite charming. Loved the heck outta dat Darwyn Cooke art and dem Dave Stewart colors.

Clean Room #1 was sick. Loved it! Simone is just so good at getting me to care. And we have a woman of colour for our hero, wut wut! A really intriguing first issue. Loved the
demon/monster
stuff..!

I didn't even know what the hell it was about going in. All I knew was Simone + Vertigo, so what the heck? Ended up really enjoying it. Still seems like it's going to be a bit more spooky than her usual work, but I'm interested in seeing where it goes. There are
definite Scientology parallels going on here, and I liked when the founder showed up at the end with her Addams family clique

I'm sorry.

You didn't get to Ultimatum yet, did you? Brace yourself.

It is coming up very quickly. Based on Loeb's Ultimates volume 3, I am going to very possibly gouge my eyes out before I finish it.

But to speak of much better comics, I am really happy Ant-Man started up again. I have really enjoyed Spencer's run on it. Superior Foes was one of my favorites and this captures a lot of the same tones.

Amazing Spider-Man has been good as well, which surprised me as I have not been a fan of Slott's work with the character before this.

Yeah, the ending was rad! We figured it would tie into the
accident at the beginning. Wasnt surprised about that... Seeing Klaus on that shelf. Oh-! My favorite part is when Astrid-as-a-kid asks about Daddy's face of snakes over a black page.
That was chill-inducing goodness.

Damn, maybe I ought to read Ant-Man. I didn't like the preview. But comicsgaf seems to love this title and I adored Superior Foes.

Got a good laugh from your reports from the ultimate dark side.

I think the bold was exactly what was going on, with Secret Wars bearing down it looks as if his only choices were to tie into Time Runs Out or do a short filler arc.

I hope the next issue is more Peter too. I want to see how Aunt May is doing, or maybe have Jonah interview him on TV as they trade snide barbs.

Justice League is sooooo gooooood! Godayym that art is sexy. Fabok's art on the previous issues was already fantastic but Manapaul's in this one is just sublime. Plus, Johns is just killing it with the comic book epicness. Think I'll dive into all the one shots spinning out of this.

Also got B&R Eternal #3, although haven't read it yet. Looking forward to it.

As for Marvel I got the Inhuman books. Uncanny was decent, although I did think Black Bolt looked odd. That new(?) Reader character kinda reminds me of 90's Gambit lol, but I dig it.
Kang unleashing dinosaurs and WW1 troops was hilariously awesome.
Kinda annoyed at comixology though cause the synopsis spoils the ending :/. Karnak was terrific. I knew Ellis would mean good things but it still surpassed my expectations. The book is definitely funnier than I excepted. Plus the art is gorgeous.

Oh I forgot there's also Weirdworld to read! All in all, I'd say it is a great week for comics.

I'm in the mood for some podcasts before bed. Can anyone recommend a good comic-related podcast?
I really like Cape Crisis (and all other LaserTime podcasts).
Comic Conspiracy is also a good one.

The book started off with an original sin tie-in and jumped straight into Spider-verse and people had issues with both.

If you liked Superior Foes you'll probably enjoy the writing at the very least. I don't think it's as good as Superior Foes but it has been enjoyable every issue. Beetle also makes an appearance in the first first issue which was great.

I just wish Lieber was on art duties since I really like his art. The current artist is okay but it's really nothing special.

And guys, is ASM actually good now or is everyone pulling my leg? I miss Spider-Man :(

It's good if you like fun.

I do enjoy fun... If it stays consistent then I guess I'll have to check it out.

Also just read Tokyo Ghost #2 and I really enjoyed it. Anyone who had an issue with the bad guy from the last issue will happy to know that it was just a one-off sort of deal. This issue went more into Debbie and Led's backstories and it made me care about them more. We also get some nice plot development going on which is nice. Very interested to see where this cliffhanger leads.

And Sean Murphy's art in this is phenomenal. There's one spread in this issue that was just incredible.

So let's say I haven't read any new 52 justice league but I love Manapuls art and want to try getting into justice league/DCs wider narrative leading to Darkseid war. What books are recommended to read so I am not totally lost. I only read Batfamily DC books and a few edge case books like Black Canary.

Also can someone explain Titans Hunt and what I need to read to read that.

Oy what the hell is going on in Titans Hunt?
So lost

come to gaf to see what the fuck is up with it, find more confused people lol

so from what i understand, in red hood and the outlaws starfire has some flashbacks to an earlier teen titans with dick grayson, herself, speedy, and others, but it's never really elaborated on and never really mentioned outside of that in any dc thing. after reading this issue, from what i understand there was an earlier teen titans than the stuff that red robin's doing now that dick led, but some event happened that made all the members forget about the team and something with titans tower getting taken out by water (?). it's somewhat interesting to see where this is leading to, but it's starting to feel between grayson, batman and robin eternal, the upcoming batgirl cameo, and now this, we're getting too much fucking grayson, and this is coming from someone who fucking loves nightwing.

So since I haven't read much FF nor do I particularly plan to...what was Nathaniel Richards' endgame? Kill his son and sculpt his grandson into some sort of god weapon? Because what little I'm gathering from this storyline via the Atlantis Rising story, that's what his endgame is.

He took over Latveria at some point. Though, he did cause Attilan to essentially take over Atlantis.

I'm confused by his motives.

"Denny was fond of saying “We don’t ask why the Batmobile doesn’t get caught in traffic.” That is apparently the corollary to the Archie Goodwin saying about how the entire DC Universe is an inverted pyramid built on a secret identity that’s a pair of glasses. If you want to tear it apart, you can do so with ease. You’re not nearly as clever or smart as you think you are if you decide to go and nitpick it and tear it down, because there are loose threads everywhere. All that proves is that you’re a killjoy. [Laughs] If you want to take it apart, it’s very easy to do, but that’s not the point. You either accept the world you’re in or you don’t. If you do, you’re going to have a blast. If you don’t, you better find something else to read, because you’re going to be very unhappy."
-Greg Rucka

Well put, although this doesn't apply to all forms of fiction :p

Woah assassin's Creed is getting good reviews

Just as a quick reminder, IGN gave it an 8.2 out of what I would assume is some sort of marketing obligation. It's probably way, way worse. The only time they review shit honestly are comic books and film.
