DC All Access interview Lee/Didio, reveal Dark Knight III origins and new artwork (Newsarama)

So there ya go: Didio wanted Miller to introduce Carrie Kelly into New52 continuity, Miller didn't want to do that but his own thing, and the negotiations snowballed into "The Master Race" with a full exploration of TDKR universe.

Which begs the question: what the f*ck is wrong with Dan Didio, that the idea of shackling New52 continuity with TDKR characters/elements seemed like a good idea to him?
Because TDKR is popular and that helps make money?
Errr isn't Carrie already in the new 52?

She is Damians tutor in Batman and Robin.

Is that actually Carrie or just an homage?

Watching the interview (Didio's segment starts around the 12m20s mark), it sounds like they approached Miller as they were already introducing Carrie in B&R, perhaps with an eye towards Miller doing a project once Carrie's foothold in New52 continuity had been established, and Miller said instead of that he wanted to do something else with Carrie. Then Dan says he'd always been interested in expanding the TDKR universe and that's what the project initially was, then it became The Master Race with all of these side-stories to expand the universe that Didio first wanted.

As for why they approached Miller in the first place, yes it's obvious: Didio and Lee were coming out of Before Watchmen looking to do more projects that capitalize on past successes; Sandman Overture was one, and the other was the Miller project that eventually morphed into The Master Race. The whole process took about two years to coalesce into what we're getting now, which fits the "what's the next Before Watchmen?" narrative.

I can't help the feeling that the answer to "what's the next Before Watchmen?" is that there should never have been a Before Watchmen in the first place.

At least Sandman Overture seems to have turned out good.

always really annoyed me that never went anywhere. she kind of disappeared after damien came back

Yep. I don't even remember if they had Damian meet up with her.

It did lead to that really sad moment of Bruce in the Batman costume cutting audio from Damian to make a voice-mail to play for Carrie. That made me really sad :(

Maybe she'll appear in Batman and Robin Eternal? good as place as any really.

Too many Batman sidekicks. Everyone's got their favorites, and they've all got to come creeping back in eventually. Choking instead of supporting, strangling, crowding out.

Is Cass alive? or are people still forgetting she exists :(

I could cope with Jason being dead, just like Barry he should have stayed in comic purgatory.
Cass is back starting possibly as early as this week, and definitely by week three of B&R Eternal:

All right comicgaf...let's say you get to keep one Batman, one Batgirl and one Robin. Everyone else is dead and stays dead for at least a decade. Who are your picks?

Edit: Messi with the mind reading, wow

Jason as Batman, Jason as Batgirl, and Jason as Robin.

Then Jason can die. The circle of life.

Hmm...

Bruce, Babs, Jason.

Gonna catch some flack for that last one.

Hmmm I think I'm gonna go with Bruce, Cass and Damian. I think Cass and Damian would be fun

Babs is worst Batgirl so put her back in the wheelchair. Damian as Robin and Dick as Batman with Steph as Batgirl.

I'm ok with the side people like Stef being their own heroes. But they need to stick to those characters.

I've kinda liked the thing they're doing with Steph, having her pop up in other Batbooks occasionally. It's been kinda fun. And she's shaping up well in Catwoman too, of course. Feels like they're building towards a solo title at some point.

Yeah. They are doing a decent job with her. I wouldn't mind a book where her and Harper team up. Their eternal bits were good.

They were! They'd play off nicely against each other too, both relative outsiders in a Batfamily-dominated Gotham, but one admiring and one... not so much :p

Is Harper in Batman Eternal a lot? I've only been following the main Batman book and her presence is periphery.

Batman: Bruce
Robin: Damian (as much as I hate the little sh*t, long term he has more potential)
Batgirl: Cass (see above without the hate part)

Let Dick be Nightwing, or Grayson, and let him be separate; the Robin who flew the nest and adopted his own stage, became his own one-man show. Babs became more effective as Oracle than she ever did as Batgirl, and taking up that role doesn't mean she has to sit in a wheelchair again. Jason to me is always going to be that tattered costume in a glass showcase. As Red Hood, he only works as the corrupted one, the Robin who fell from grace into infamy; let Dick be the heroic outsider, not Jason. Tim's position has been usurped by Damian, frankly I'm surprised he even still exists; if I had my way he wouldn't, at least not as a Robin. Steph... let Stephanie be the Spoiler, the wannabe, the not-quite-good-enough-but-still-tries-her-hardest third-party observer to the whole Bat-family dynamic.

And let Bruce be sexy! Snyder said something not too long ago about how the women ogle Grayson and his unmistakable tush and he goes, "hey look over here! Bruce can be sexy too!" and the women don't see it, only now they do because he's got the sexy beard and jeans. I think there's something to that; I thik that to a certain extent Bruce, through broad portrayal and in contrast to other characters, has gotten this rep as an asexual, unapproachable, monolithic engine of justice. And that's not sexy, it's not approachable, it's not relateable, it's not human, and that's the real shame because Batman is human, Bruce is human.

She has a bigger part than the regular batman book. She is in a few issues of it with Stef and Red Hood. She is good in it.

Oh and they are totally making Frankie the new oracle in Batgirl.

Bruce, Steph, TIm

I'm enacting the Johns Accords of Everything Was Better When I Was A Teen

This is tough because the interplay between the three characters would be critical. I love Babs far too much to discard her and since cheating with her as Oracle would seemingly not be allowed I'm forced to have her be Batgirl. Dick is basically required because the two characters have such a history (even in the N52). Which means that there's one spot left to play with and since I want to make it interesting:

Batman: Dick
Batgirl: Babs (Not my top Batgirl choice but my only Babs choice so...)
Robin: Steph and shut up this counts.

That's cool I really like what I've seen of her in Batman and her costume is rad as fuck. Will start my Batman Eternal trade tonight.
