Meanwhile we got Star Wars Outlaws, TLOU2, Interstellar, Flintlock, Dustborn, Forspoken, Returnal, Fable, Unknown 9 Awakening, Witcher 4, Lost Records, Goodbye Volcano High, Horizon… probably lots more.

Up until CDs, cost of making the games was more, a lot more, than the actual costs to develop. It was by far the biggest risk. You also needed a significant lead time and had to guess what you needed. Too many copies, the game was a money pit. Too few, leave money on the table and it takes a long time to fill that demand.

This actually led to a mini-slump in 1995 as the customers were rapidly transitioning to 32-bit and a lot of companies screwed up on their 16-bit game orders.
