Console exclusives on PC

If every game was on every system, what would be the point of having different systems in the first place? Without multiple systems you don't get competition and without competition you get stagnation and regression.

Stagnation and regression are still happening. In technical department at least.

Seems to be the start of a new trend this gen that big third party exclusives are also on pc.

FF14
Street Fighter 5
Ryse
Dead Rising 3
Rise of Tomb Raider

Is there more and how do you feel about it?

TitanFall
Eve Valkyrie

And there are some indie 'console exclusives' on PC aswell:

No Man's Sky
Below
Volume
The Witness
SOMA
Ori and the Blind Forest

I don't have a gaming PC but I've always thought third parties should release all their games on PC. It's a huge market and a new source of revenue, especially when you consider the rising development costs.

Funny how the PC is probably the most progressive platform (including gameplay) between the bunch

I would love to have old console exclusives on pc.

I mean, why can't we have old Halos, Uncharteds, etc. on pc?

They would keep selling and selling (Steam sales), especially when a new chapter gets released on consoles.

I'd rather have a world where Sony, Nintendo and Ms are all just publishing everything on pc, of course.

I feel great, I am able to play great games at a higher resolution/more fps, use stuff like DSR or gedosato, have fully customizables controls(in good ports).

Every 3rd party exclusive should be released simultaneously for PC if the budget allows it.

I think it's fantastic.
If console warriors want to pretend PC doesn't matter, and PC players get a bunch of games i'm totally okay with that, I quite like playing games and not being made to purchase a $400+ console to play them is great.

That goes both ways and in fact would sound even more important coming from a console user that wants to play a PC exclusive.

But then again its hard to find a game not being released on console anymore.

Well, you can watch any DVD or Blu-Ray on any TV set... or am I wrong? and there are countless manufacturers offering different kinds of features...

What if you could only watch Sony Pictures movies on a Sony set?

This breeds the "One platform to rule them all' idea which would actually be a terrible thing.

Why decrease options and competition?

If your game is coming to more than one platform, then it's not "exclusive" at all - even if the other platform happens to be PC.

Although as someone who plays games almost entirely on PC these days, I can't really complain about this apparent loophole.

I have no evidence on this.

But it seems that the "long tail" is bigger on PC than on consoles.
Console games are very dependent on "day 1 sales", while PC games remain alive longer.

Also, due to being ignored by gaming media for so long, most PC games live or die with mouth to mouth recommendations instead of needing the gaming media hype to sell.

I feel like we had 5 times as many of those in 2014 as we had in 2013. If there would be even more I'd have no idea what to do with them!

It was good for old school RPGs for sure and there is definitely an increase overall; Divinity: OS and Wasteland 2 are great games. I guess I am thinking more in terms of big budget AAA games or at least, high production value, large scope titles. Elite and Star Citizen have the potential to be my dream space games, but even with one releasing soon, neither look close to being realised.

Maybe I'm just greedy!

Why decrease options and competition?

Having every game on every platform would increase options for the consumer and ultimately competition from hardware makers should be for making the best hardware. Buying a proprietary box to play locked down games is becoming a weirder concept every year, especially as everything has gotten more standardized (all the consoles have basically the same controller at this point among other things).

Why decrease options and competition?

It's not "one platform".

It's actually one standard, an open platform that offers more options for consumers and more space and visibility for devs.

Exclusives hurt everyone, even first-party ones.

This trend is a result of two things: a, The big and ever-growing popularity of the PC among gamers which makes its exclusion through moneyhatting a rather expensive proposition for the moneyhatters and b, the fact that console makers don't see the PC as immediate competition so they don't feel like paying to exclude it is necessary. I expect b to change pretty fast if Valve successfully relaunches the Steam Machines or if console makers realize that they are bleeding customers towards PC.

I think all third party games should come to PC as I'd rather not buy a console for just one or two games. Case in point Sunset Overdrive and Quantum Break although I expect QB to come to PC eventually

Consoles still have a place in the world without exclusives. People didn't buy 10+ million PS4s because of exclusives, it's because the hardware is appealing and cheap (at least $400 is pretty cheap to me) and they can play multiplayer with their friends on the same platform and such.

It's always strange to me when people say consoles would face a doomsday scenario in such a situation. They are out of touch with reality and the common consumer.

Is there more and how do you feel about it?

I suppose the difference for me, is that I never saw gaming to be so fractured and separate by their platforms. I always felt that something as a console exclusive but that was also on the PC, is nothing but a misnomer. It isn't exclusive as I don't see gaming as restricted to separate devices (console / PC / mobile). To me they are all the same.

That being said, by all means let the console platforms bicker and separate PC as a platform from the conversation. If that is what it takes for PC to continue getting games that would otherwise be denied, so be it. I love it!

Exclusives hurt everyone, even first-party ones.
Only if you don't own the console the first party exclusive comes out on.

First party exclusive games are generally better because they get better funding and are developed for a single set of hardware in mind. I would never want a game like Uncharted to be developed for multiple hardware configurations and suffer as a result.

I mean, why can't we have old Halos [...] on pc?

Well, we have (at least the first 2). Interestingly enough, IIRC they can still be played online, which makes PC the only platform where you can still play Halo/Halo 2 online.
Although, of course MCC made the gameplay available on Xbone as well via remakes (I have no idea how much of the original glitches etc. they left).

This is probably going to be the new normal. Third party exclusives largely don't exist anymore. A console will probably never again match something like the PS2 in terms of third-party exclusives because it no longer makes financial sense to only develop for one console, even if it is dominating. It's also much easier to develop multi-platform games now.

Do you think Naughty Dog is a shit developer? Because that is what you are saying.

I remember reading a post a few years ago here on GAF stating that every game should have a PC version sooner or later. At the time I thought that guy was an arsehole for stating that....today I'm that arsehole.

I really wish I knew how to PC...

It's getting worse and worse out here in console land

It really isn't hard and there is an endless wealth of information to help you. It is just an expensive initial down payment that will become a more marginal one over time thanks to much cheaper game prices. That is until you get lured into upgrades!

MCC uses the PC ports which fixed most of the glitches (and introduced some new ones), so whatever was possible in those should be possible in that.

Look at all the CRPGs we got this year alone. When was the last time that happened?

But then again its hard to find a game not being released on console anymore.

You'd have to be completely oblivious to the PC space to believe this.

I think I might start saving up for one then. Maybe it can be my graduation present to myself.

It's just so daunting at first. All these drivers and hardware specs and etc.

Still, as a consumer, you're buying a system you don't actually need just for another software that could run (maybe better) on pc/on other hardware.

And it hurts the developer too: Mario would sell so much on multiple hardware it's crazy just thinking about it.

I know, Nintendo would have to give up the revenue from their hardware; but still, we are consumers and videogamers, we should only care about games.

No it doesn't. Those 'exclusives' wouldn't be funded or made if the platform holder didn't have an interest in pushing their ecosystem out into the market.

Actually yes, they would, once the platform holder realizes the hardware market isn't viable anymore. Ms, Sony and N need to pull a Sega and go third party. xD

Exactly, I mean look at the movie and music industries. There's no longer angry growth or competition because MP3s and VOD work on any machine.

Yes, continue to put words into my mouth. It makes your argument so much more compelling.

Third party games developed for 3, 4, 5, etc different platforms in mind will never have the same production values are pure exclusives.

They can do amazing things mind you, but there will always be a gulf between third party and first party.

True. As long as PC gaming can't offer a low-cost easy to use entry level gaming PC, consoles will have a place in the market. Hopefully the Steam Machines will offer that at some point, assuming of course that Valve will pick up their glacial pace.

FFXIV isn't a console exclusive. MS just doesn't want it.
