Cronos: The New Dawn |OT| Survive The Future. Salvage The Past.

Gentlemen, I don't want to spread any misinformation but, I've been reading online that the performance mode on the PS5 has frame rate issues - can any gaffer who's played it confirm this ?

Cheers

I've played on ps5 pro performance mode and encountered maybe twice any noticeable frame drops on a vrr display.

Thanks Arsic 👍
So, you have VRR turned on for "unsupported games" via the PS5 menu ?
Does this run better/worse/the same as SH2 Remake on the Pro ?

Cheers
I didn't play SH2 on my pro. I went 3080 pc on that one.

It runs and looks better than SH2 for me though on the settings I used on my rig.

Why do you need the main character to be pretty? Are you gonna touch your noodle while playing or something?
I am talking about the suit design. I am clearly not on about her face as it's not even been revealed. Nothing worse than someone trying to be a sarcastic bitch and not even knowing what they're on about.

Folks, is running away from encounters a viable or even recommended option? I've done it twice now after running out of ammo, and I'm wondering if I'm missing out/screwing myself by not taking out all enemies.

Spoilers the two times were: 1) in the apartment courtyard with 5+ enemies, I ran into the workshop with half-closed doors and enemies couldn't follow and 2) blew through all my ammo with the spiky zombie superintendent in the basement and ended up running back upstairs where he couldn't follow

I use charge shots, gas containers when available, accuracy is maybe 80%, and I have refused to buy ammo from the shop. Ammo is either from chems or pickups. Lemme know your thoughts.

Yeah, plenty of people have criticized the goofy looking suit. It's not anywhere close to Issac's suit in Dead Space, which was badass MFer.

We didn't even know there was a woman underneath it until the devs revealed it. The people jumping on your nuts about that are retarded.

A good survival horror lets you escape, run past enemies.

I'm only like 90 minutes it but I'm really enjoying it. Didn't expect it to have this much atmosphere (sometimes literally).

But boy, seems like EVERY shot matters. Even with buying, finding, and crafting ammo, I'm still barely getting through encounters with spare ammo.

This might be a massive pain in the ass later, but for now it makes for even more tense combat.

I haven't let a single one of these fucks live.

Max out damage on shotgun and regular pistol, as well as charge time. Shotty is king.

Often, you can head Rock with pistol a weak boy or two that has a Chance to spawn ammo, then save fire if anyone tries to absorb. Big dudes show up we do charged shotguns full stop and send them back to hell.

You can potentially miss out on things like:
-Lore items
-Ammo money ingredients items to sell etc
-Rarely could it be a new weapon. There are missable weapons.
-I'm unsure if they are missable as I think it could be but philanthropy or whatever they are called. (I don't want to state what these are if you haven't gotten to it yet because it's a spoiler… but "perks".)

Game just keeps delivering. Right amount of challenge. Resource managing matters, exploring matters, how you fight matters.

Story so far is top shelf as I am trying to piece it together.

9/10 so far. I was spot on with the idea this would be similar to Callisto protocol.

I was massively hyped for Callisto Protocol but ended up skipping due to the negative reception. I got it for cheap the other day. Worth playing with measured expectations?

Charged shots only. There's only one enemy type I use a normal handgun bullet on and it's a green acid exploder running on the ground.

Everything else you want to space out and use charged shots from weapons to the head.

Some enemies if they have armor to them you can bait to melee then run to their back for a squishy spot, or their arm/leg may be pink and exposed.

Regular shots will destroy your ammo so don't bother. If something gets too close try to run, melee if it's almost dead, or shoot a charged to the leg to make them fall over.

You do get an item when aiming early on that shows on the side of your gun how much health an enemy has left so you can decide what to do in the moment. Also lets you "scan" lifeless bodies in rooms to not waste ammo if it's already dead or sitting there as a trap.

I think so. If only because sci fi third person action over-the-shoulder horror games don't come around too often. It's no Dead Space, but it's aight.

Go in with :
-Visuals are the key takeaway
-Don't play on harder difficulties so you can enjoy the guns
-It's actually a melee and dodge first game
-Only 2 real bosses in the game
-Very linear

It's a good game and could've been the blueprints for an amazing sequel. Its issue is it's the dead space OG guru so people expected glens new game to be as good or better but it had many issues that didn't exist in dead space 1 or 2. Plus prior to its release it was being called AAAA, and the souls like of survival horror… terrible marketing. It also had performance issues on launch.

That said you'd be hard pressed to find a better looking quick romp on ps5 pro. 4k 60fps with ray tracing and even a 8k 30fps mode.

Also I actually really like the suit and helmet design. It's an HR Giger "modern" take on an old fashioned diving suit or at least that's how I see it. Imagine the helmet made of glass but it's metal here and has that uncomfortable looking vagina-shaped "mouth". Combined with her kind of warped/slightly garbled voice, it's unsettling imo.

I just see something like this and it creeps me out.

The Switch version had some weird dark outline flickering around some of the models. I wonder if that's present in the other console versions.
I've had 0 issues on ps5 pro. I basically compare elder scrolls 4 oblivion remaster as the benchmark for bad for performance.

The hdr worked right out the gate with no crushed blacks.

The fps has only twice shown a noticeable jitter in performance mode.

The game looks crisp, details noticeable, and isn't soft.

Not much else to say. Looks good, runs good, plays even better.

It's like a sci-fi take on the Onion Knight from Dark Souls, though I agree there is very obvious HR Giger influence in the design. It's just so muted and bland. Needs something a bit extra to make it pop IMO.

It is a viable option, assuming the game isn't locking the exit like it does with some arenas.

There aren't that many unique things (like weapons or cores) to find in the game and they're often hidden in places where it's safe. Taking down multiple enemies means using a lot of ammo, especially without the firepower upgrades. A good tactic is to try and explore your surroundings before some enemies "wake up", so before completing an objective or approaching the marked exit. There's also quite a lot of checkpoints in the game, so you can go back if enemies spawned too early.

As for ammo, I had to buy it before several bigger fights later in the game, despite spending most energy on firepower upgrades. I was able to rely only on loot & crafting before that. Part of it is because you're encountering heavy enemies more often in the late stages, even those who were treated kinda like bosses during the first encounters.

Waiting to see what the optimization on the Pro is. Alex saying there's tech difficulties that will break immersion at times.
I will say they vastly over shit on mgs3 delta on pro. I was expecting ES4 remaster levels of awful performance and a blurry mess… none of that was true.

I could've missed out on one of my favorite game experiences of the last 15 years. Joy to see this game in this glory with the new controls.

This is running far better than even delta, but even with delta the major hiccups were at the end being chased by shagohod.

Sticks Sticks said it ran and looked good on the Series X as well. Curious to hear what DF says in their analysis about the immersion breaking tech issues.

Honestly the warden suit design would've been a nice secondary skin for the traveler. Hers is tame. Even the dlc skins for her are just color swaps sadly.

I can't get into spoilers but if my theory holds up there's a real reason why the helmets are the way they are from a function standpoint.

It's really a woman underneath the Giger vagina helmet?

Sounds cool to me :pie_ssmiling:

We all know the baddest asses in space are chicks anyway

This happened to me twice too at the 70% completion mark.

There was like a "food market" area I needed more ammo to buy and the third boss. Let's call him the bull.

I've been smart to always keep a couple thousand essence on hand in case this needs to take place.

Aha. I will definitely take their words lightly in this case and form my opinion later. Thanks for that.

Yep having some energy left for purchasing consumables becomes a solid tactic later in the game. I used to buy upgrades as soon as I had enough credits, but eventually changed my tactics in case I need to purchase supplies and crafting them won't be enough.

I can't wait to jump in after work tomorrow. I said I would hold off but the game seems so badass.

It's one of those games where within literally the first 5 minutes you sit right up and go "ok. I see you. Let's do this thing!!!"

The atmosphere and music really elevate this game for me.

Something like Callisto protocol or dead space never have memorable soundtracks but great audio design. Cronos sells its world not only visually but with the soundtrack as well as stellar use of audio sounds.

At times you're listening to some straight out of stranger things tunes, at another something gospel choir vocals that could've been in a JRPG.

No surprise after Silent Hill 2. That game had phenomenal sound design. You felt every shotgun blast. You heard everything in the environment. All crisp and pleasing to the ear. The sound design team at Bloober are S-tier.
The key Audio for me is all these enemies are in the walls lol. It can be very unnerving as the world pulsates around you, but the headphones let you easily distinguish which enemy may even be in the room and exactly where it is.

If this game sticks the landing it'll be an all time favorite for me for survival horror along with evil within 1 and RE2R/RE4R.

Not enjoying the game at all. Refunded. Worse than all of its inspirations. Not on the level of any of them. I guess Bloober are only good for remakes of Silent Hill when they have existing material to draw from

They didn't get enough credit for that in my opinion. I also roasted Bloober a lot prior to release but I would go so far as saying that SH2R has some of the best sound design I've ever heard in a game. The combat partially worked so well because the sfx were unnerving to begin with. The enemies even hit the ground with this eerily realistic spunding thud I've never heard in a game, it made the bodies feel heavy and thick.

The prison is hands down the most evil sounding shit anyone has ever made. I was so freaked out by the sound of that switch and the timed lights at one point, I actually saved and closed the game instead of having to do it again lol.

I won't even hate. If you know what you like you know what you like. Too much to play right now to waste time or money on a dud for yourself.

I was unimpressed with a variety of games this year but I'm super grateful to have this and mgs3 delta to elevate 2025.

Hell yes I managed to make some gaming time, right past the first "chapter" at the train station, gotta call it a day till Monday. Really enjoying this. Hooked on the story. Another game that somehow feels so much better to play than in all previews, combat feels fine I have no problem landing charged headshots. I Don't mind backtracking and inventory management; all this retro design stuff is actually a plus for me. I just love the vibe and exploration then it's brutalist 1981 Cracow so I'm extra biased here...

Aha yea it was the IGN review cutting to footage of Dead Space which made me think it.

As for the posts, it's just one guy, thankfully. One of the best things about this forum is drive-by snarky comments like that are a rarity.
