Cronos: The New Dawn |OT| Survive The Future. Salvage The Past.

I won't even hate. If you know what you like you know what you like. Too much to play right now to waste time or money on a dud for yourself.

I was unimpressed with a variety of games this year but I'm super grateful to have this and mgs3 delta to elevate 2025.
Too much to play? I never have that feeling.

Too much to play? I never have that feeling.

I certainly do. Maybe too many genres we're interested in?

Games I'm failing to juggle currently:
  • MGS Delta
  • Cronos: The new Dawn
  • Shinobi: Art of Vengeance
  • Playing Elden Ring Nightreign with a friend for the first time
  • Sol Cresto
  • Rogue Trader
And I have an embarrassing amount more.

Watched the prologue in a video and I notice how the black levels are washed out, grey instead of inky black like in Dead Space. Is this just due to HDR but I'm watching the video in SDR, or is this just by design? I dislike this shit so much, just looks bad.

They didn't get enough credit for that in my opinion. I also roasted Bloober a lot prior to release but I would go so far as saying that SH2R has some of the best sound design I've ever heard in a game. The combat partially worked so well because the sfx were unnerving to begin with. The enemies even hit the ground with this eerily realistic spunding thud I've never heard in a game, it made the bodies feel heavy and thick.

The prison is hands down the most evil sounding shit anyone has ever made. I was so freaked out by the sound of that switch and the timed lights at one point, I actually saved and closed the game instead of having to do it again lol.
They had a very talented guy named Arek Reikowski working on audio in both Silent Hill 2 and Cronos (and the studio's past games). Unfortunately this was his last project for Bloober and from what I understand he went to Elsewhere studio.

This can be corrected in settings

There was a hdr improvement video posted earlier to assist.

Myself I didn't experience what I'm seeing. The blacks are a pure black, nothing looks washed out, and most importantly no crushed blacks.

Mileage may vary.

Yeah the 2nd game lost all that weird feeling you got from original Evil Within, I LOVE the safe room with creepy nurse and the music in original game......it was soooooo good!
The second one actually starts off very strong, but then... they stray from that vibe and it gets chaotic. Reminds me of RE4 somewhat*, the further you progress, the more action heavy it gets. I like destroying everything with the brass knuckles. Most bosses included. 1 is superior, btw.

To me the 2nd game's story was very generic, to me the original Evil Within had vibe of physiological horror similar to Silent Hill but gameplay of RE4.

Hearing that the game is difficult is music to my ears. I love when my ass is on fire in these kind of games.
Wild part is it has a hard mode and new game plus.

The hard mode has me super interested in how it handles it. I assume you take double damage, and enemies maybe need 1-2 extra shots, or even less resources.

In its current normal base mode the further you get the more mindful you are for all shots. I've reloaded a section just because I missed 2 bullets lol. No shot left behind.

There's a perk that I have to vastly increase melee damage but honestly melee is still worthless lol.

I always wonder why tf they even include melee when it feels bad and does nothing. Dead Space did the same. I have no idea what purpose it serves and there are many TPS style games that do that.

The resource-drop algorithm is more forgiving than I expected.

Seems like every time I'm completely out of ammo, I'll get 5+ handgun bullets out of a small crate after finding nothing/50 energy when I was sitting pretty with ammo.

Also, in times when I've game over'd because I ran out of ammo, my next try, the enemies go down much faster? Or maybe I just used better tactics.

Regardless, this game is absolutely my jam. Survival horror is the most immersive genre for me because when death can come at any time from anywhere, I am laser-focused.

My initial 8 reaction has edged up to an 8.5 after playing ~7 hours.

So similar to Silent Hill 2. Good to hear. I liked how that functioned.

I heard hard mode in new game plus is a joke because you have all the upgrades.

The bullshit move was to lock the real finale behind hard mode, i hate this shit when majority of players never replay games more than once.

Played a little bit over an hour. Really digging it so far. Some minor stutters here and there, but the game runs really good without RT. Im getting 140+ fps maxed out with DLSS4 quality and framegen

Dead Space had gun smack as a last resort get off me option and stomps after stasis could destroy enemies. There were also these tiny bastards that were hard to hit with a gun, but stasis with stomps/smacks took care of them. Mostly I used them if there were breakable supply boxes nearby.

So tempted to get this, but this game sounds like the complete opposite of what I'm into.
  • Hard difficulty - Ugh
  • No Easy mode - Ugh
  • Inventory management - Ugh
  • Bloat to extend game length - Ugh
YET, I wanna play it. Maybe I'll wait for a PS Plus trial.

Yea I meant the gun smack specifically. Stomp is technically melee though and rules so you're right.

Started it, loving it so far. Weapons pack punch, enemies take a hit before going down, ace atmosphere and the game is challenging just like survial horror is meant to be. This stuff is real good.

Shrug. Just use YouTube to see it lol.

I've done that for games I don't plan to complete multiple times.

For this one I'm curious if I can do hard mode without a new game plus carry over. That would be tight.

Maybe they tweaked some things in the day 1 patch, but I didn't feel like the loot system was reacting to how the player is performing. I had a situation in which I completely ran out of ammo so I started destroying crates in the kill room - they were either empty or dropped energy which was useless to me at that point. Ended up reloading the game since melee combat is pretty worthless.

You can play NG+ on normal (the default setting) or hard, no need to pick the new difficulty.

Well damn I was planning to wait for a sale or something, save it for later..
But then scores came in decent and hey fuck it how often do I get to play a new survival horror that looks intriguing? And with killer synthwave infused soundtrack at that if that's true what I caught in one of the reviews.
So I guess I'm playing it now, and now like ~1 hour in it might be for the better! Good vibes so far, this might very well be a pleasant surprise this year!

Hm...the algo is a black box, so who knows? Reminds me of when people said iPod Shuffle would repeat some songs over and over and wasn't truly random, and the programmers were like "lol" because it was actually random.

*Google AI says its resource system is designed to give the supply the player needs most at that moment (e.g. bullets when low on ammo).

Stomping isn't as good here. You can't destroy bodies this way to prevent enemies from merging - have to use fire. There are some small enemies, but
they jump at you and explode with acid so you should use guns against them
You can try stomping if you knocked an enemy down, but it's not a guaranteed instant kill and they can get back up rather quickly. That leaves destroying boxes which works as intended.

Arsic Arsic said some of the music is like something out of Stranger Things? So are we talking 80's-ish ambient synthy stuff or am I going to be walking down a creepy fucking hallway with "Should I Stay Or Should I Go" playing in the background?

The entire soundtrack is on youtube, I'd also say it's got that 80s synthwave vibe (since part of it takes place in 1980s ;)) Definitely one of the highlights of the game and music / ambient isn't dominating the rest of the experience.

My reserve wasn't much on the difficulty but more for the need of a second run, sorry if i wasn't clear.
