DC Universe Rebirth Begins This May

If they were smart they'd do a complete refresh. Scrap all history and go Ultimate route. (Minus the rampant angst that was prevalent in the Ultimate line)
New 52 was effectively this. The big problem? Green Lantern and Batman (for the most part) stayed the same (GL was exactly the same). So it didn't work. When a huge chunk of the books in your reboot aren't rebooted, it causes a problem. Doing it all over again won't help.
My guess is unboot... but didn't they already do that with Convergence?
Exactly. They kept the New 52 canon whilst bringing everything else back into canon.

This will be beautiful. Or boring. But no matter what happens Wonder Woman's origin will be changed for no good reason.
I'm wondering what else they can do with it. Besides the clay thing, the whole daughter of a god made sense as an alternative (despite not agreeing with it personally.) I don't know if they'd go back. Guess it depends on what they're doing for the movie.

A company that he had to sell to DC after 5 years because they were bleeding money. Not exactly the best resume.

Also, running a comic book company that publishes ≈5 comics a month (some of which were creator owned) doesn't exactly prepare you to be the publisher of DC.

Co-publisher! And it's not like Didio's much better.

Yeah, Didio sucks too.

I don't mean to leave Geoff Johns out of this...because he is woefully underqualified too but I'm not exactly sure where he is on the pecking order. I don't think his job is as important as publisher, but some times he seems to be on the same level as Jim Lee.

I doubt any of them keep their jobs much longer with the way Marvel is dominating them in sales right now though.

The lady at the top is Diane Nelson. She runs DC Entertainment and Warner Bros Interactive.

Dan Didio and Jim Lee are co-publishers of DC Entertainment. They - theoretically - keep DC Entertainment operating from a closer, on-the-ground perspective.

Geoff Johns is Chief Creative Officer, meaning he's in the mix on publishing decisions, but his real job is to be the middle man between the comics and other media. He got his start as Richard Donner's assistant and is longtime partners with Dark Knight/Man of Steel writer David Goyer, so he knows movies and TV about as well as comics. This is why you can point to the characters being used in the CW shows or the films and see a clear lean towards Johns' favorites.

So long as this makes Green Lantern and Flash readable again I'll be happy.
I wouldn't be surprised if they're bringing back the classic JSA. I remember Johns saying in an AMA a year or so back that JSA was the book he missed writing the most and he was bummed the N52 didn't allow for a proper JSA because the universe was too new.

My totally wild guess: Rebirth is an event wherein elements from old universe start flooding in to the main one for reasons unclear. JSA is one such group. It's not a reboot, because there'll be no retcons, but you will have large numbers of old-universe people running around.

Yeah, I can see that happening.

Bleeding Cool, massive grain of salt, etc, etc - Marguerite Bennett is the new writer on Wonder Woman. I'd be ok with that, I like how she writes Diana in the Bombshells book, but if it's double shipped I'll never know because fuck double shipped books.

I like this choice.

Other writer appointments we have heard include Tom King on bi-weekly Batman, Peter Tomasi on bi-weekly Superman, and Scott Snyder on monthly Detective Comics.

Oh my. Is this DC's Marvel Now? They coming out to play for real? (Unfortunately, they've really mined most of the great writers they have right there.)

Bennett is a work horse and in the good graces of Snyder and Simone. I'd say there's like a 90% chance this is legit.

Edit: Tom King Batman! 👍👍👍

So the super OG Blue Beetle before Ted Kord will show up?

The only thing that matters is will they un-ruin Drake and give Static another go?
no

Edit: Best thing Kord ever did was die so the rightful king could rein.

Tom King Batman would be rad beyond belief, but it's Rich, so...

I'd read a Garrett ongoing, no lie.

This guy gets it.

Tim Drake comes pre-ruined tho. Worst Robin.

Static is now on planet M iirc so he's with the rest of the milestone guys.

I'm okay with all of this.

Snyder still on a Bat title? Great.
Tomasi did good work on Batman & Robin, so I may actually read a Superman comic for once.
Isn't King the writer of Grayson - which I've heard nothing but good things about?

Edit: though the bi-weekly thing is a major sticking point I didn't notice. Looks like I'll be waiting for the trade paperbacks (which take DC forever to release).

King is currently cowriting Grayson, writing Omega Men, Vision, and Sheriff of Babylon. All of them fire. Probably my favorite new writer from the last couple of years.

Dude had a grappling hook, cockroach ship, and a flashlight.

He was on borrowed time anyway

Don't forgot the compressed air gun!

And I feel pretty safe saying that for most fans of Ted (myself included), it was due to his relationship with Booster. Blue and Gold forever!

They technically did that, but it's also meaningless in a way since none of those old universes are followed by any comics. The only effect that Convergence had on their actual publishing line involves the characters from other universes that stayed in the main Earth afterwards (Pre-Flashpoint Superman, Parallax Hall, Tellos).

DC please give me more adventures in Thunderworld. Remember how cool Convergence: Shazam was? Please. Anything.

Yes! My favorite Convergence title and 2nd favorite Multiversity one. Too bad Doc Shatner is on the new Johnny Quest / Spaceghost book, his style is perfect for the Marvel's classic look.

This is true for me. But I'm more than okay with Ted staying dead and Jaime being Blue Beetle. But I wouldn't want Ted not existing at all and just starting off with Jaime. I like the legacy. (Same way I feel about The Questions.)

Ted exists, he just hasn't shown up much.

Luthor had a Pet the Dog moment with an off-panel Ted Kord (who's apparently rather younger than usual) during Forever Evil.

Non comic book reader here, what happens when a comic book is rebooted? Or what happened to the continuity before New 52? Were the storylines just left with cliffhangers or did it have closure?

Well, some of them were.

Most of them weren't.

Generally, a reboot means that everything that happened before never happened at all. There are no stories to give closure to.

And Flashpoint was even messier than that.

I think classic Captain Marvel will be relegated to multiverse stories and mini series/one shots. I'm not confident that a Parker written Shazam series would put up numbers where DC wants them. There's also the issue that it wouldn't be inline with the movie and I doubt they would want to put out two Shazam books.

That's where I'm sitting. Lots of classic elements going to appear all of the sudden. John back on JSA would be amazing, his book is what really got me into DC in the first place. Curious what his lineup would be. I'd like to see him write Spectre and Dr. Fate in an active lineup.

As long as Superman doesn't get his red panties back, do whatever. It's not like it won't all be undone with another "event" in a few years anyway.

Which is why I gave up reading comics.

Giving up reading comic books is silly.

What you SHOULD do is just start reading comic books by Image.

No continuities to worry about, loads of original and awesome books that stand on their own as series. Very few books about capes.

Just read Saga, Low and Elephantmen and live life happier in your awakened bliss.

Forgot all about this.

nothing DC does is going to work until the hatchet is buried with Marvel and Marvel vs. DC 2 happens, complete with TV, Film, and Videogame crossovers.

Honestly I want more darksied war Shazam.

That's cool and you're gonna get it Nu52 Shazam isn't going anywhere soon but man I would love some more classic Marvel family stories like the ones we got in the last year or so.

I said anything.

After Rebirth, it turns out all Shazam users are actually Speed Force users.

Barry Allen is the greatest Shazam of all. Billy Batson is now Kid Shazam, and Barry now goes by Flashazam

I don't really like the idea of DC taking all their big characters bi-weekly. If Flash gets a good writer and doesn't go bi-weekly I'll pick it up. I have given up on Teen Titans ever being good though and the Batgirl I liked isn't under the mantle anymore so I'm good there.

Was I the only one that liked Trials of Shazam?

I didn't care for Freddy taking the mantle, it wasn't the clean break that it needed to be if they wanted to pass down the mantle. I thought the inherent concept of the story was cool but for some reason it didn't really resonate with me.

What I did like about it is that it showed more of the magic side of Shazam, and I like that Johns echoed that theme as well by making it more of a visual element with his cloak, arcing lightning and spells. He's always had this origin as a magic hero but he almost never interacted with the vertigo side because he was just too much of a traditional cape hero.

I liked it. Was looking forward to seeing what they'd do with it, should've known that it would amount to nothing.

I just liked that he had to earn it

It was always silly the wizard gave out crazy power with no way to take it back just because he had a good vibe from someone.

Greg Pak on titans tho.
