I use the same kind of arrows, my gear is repaired (not sure if that affects) and I haven't died in body form in world 4 changing the world tendency to darker. However I died in 3-2 by a invading black phantom when I accidently forgot I was in body form and went afk. :lol
So can the world tendency in world 3 affect how tough the monsters are in world 4 or do anoyone else know a reason to why my damage seem to have gone down?
If your playing online your World Tendency may be shifting regardless of your actions as well.
I noticed the Wiki still have the WT listed as gong from +3 to -4. I really wish it would just link to the Atlus wiki for WT, which seems much more precise.

Usually switch between two weapons and the bow, i'll try both and see at some point. Maybe it's just time to move on as Minamu said. :lol
That explains why the tendency seem to switch even though I made no progress. Is there a risk that my tendency is lowered if I have achieved pure white on a level? Maybe I should play off-line in that case?

WT is best controlled offline, but online can be useful if you have somehow locked yourself out of a given quest on a playthrough (the online WT may be leaning enough in one direction or the other that you don't need to have as many events left in order to achieve pure white).
Also worth mentioning that WT cannot change while you are in the world. WT updates when you return to the nexus.
Just as an example: Lets say you are in a pure white world in body form, then die (an event that would lower WT). As long as you don't return to the nexus the world should still be pure white, even though you have died and are now at the beginning. Once you leave it will change.
One thing I am not sure of is whether or not WT will shift if you switch from online mode to offline mode (I don't play online much so I'm not sure). Maybe someone else can comment on that.
I have to say that even though I just started I feel weirdly addicted to it.
However, since playing NGS2 and GoW3 I have been accidentally pressing square sometimes in the time of great panic instead of the R1 for attack and today it cost me dearly. Argh 2 fracking LATE MOON GRASS gone..whoosh.. I instantly loaded the last save game but it was too late... argh..
The one thing that pisses me off though is the same locked save system. Last year when my PS3 died I lost game saves for KZ2 and a few others and that is really bothersome.
I just hope I find a few more Late Moon Grass soon. Game's punishing difficulty feels like spiked log up my other end.

So I plan on picking this game up after my AP exams.
I'm considering either going fragile speedster (thief), or magical knight (temple knight). Is thief really difficult to work with on a first playthrough?
Also when building up your character is it best to focus on 2-3 stats, or should I try and focus on all of them while keeping my primary stats just a couple points higher than the others?

I went thief/ninja. The initial game is very tough, I can't imagine many playstyles that would spend more time working through the first level, but the middle game will be flawless and you'll feel like a downright badass by the last few levels you have left. Temple Knight on the other hand is a great starting class (I think it even starts with Heal?) with really good armor.
As far as your stats, you'll basically understand what you have to do after a few levels of upgrading. You'll find that even if you're focusing solely on a select few, you might realize how beneficial it would be to say, have an extra spell or miracle slot, and pour the necessary souls into that before returning to your primary stat boosting.

I sure hope you are very, very good at video games, otherwise you will be a corpse. When you can die in 2 hits, there is no room for error. It is definately possible to be successful, but role playing in this game can get you killed, especially in a new game against flame lurker with no magic spells.

The closest you can get to "easy mode" in the beginning of the game. That or priest (you want to bludgeon things to death? You know you do) are well rounded to get you past the inevitable growing pains.
In general you do want to focus on certain stats in the beginning. Even for hybrid characters it's wise to raise things like Str or Dex (to allow you to handle stronger weapons more efficiently) Endurance (to allow you get access to quick rolling as soon as possible with heavier armour) and then vitality and a magic stat if you are a hybrid. Dont waste any points on luck, its not necessary. Any drops can be more readily affected by world tendancy than by luck.
Ultimately, you just need to play Demon's Souls. And not what you THINK the game is. You need to play the game that the GAME knows. Very patient, very meticulous, very calculating with occasional bouts of OH SHIIII RUNN
edit: The hunter class is excellent for beginners as long as youre playing smart. Having access to a ranged weapon is both EXTREMELY useful as well as side steps any role playing issues you might have (due to it making up for a lack of magic). Upgrading dex (and a tiny bit of strength) allows you to be a profficient bow user along with being able to manipulate the pointy weapons (rapiers, daggers, etc) exceedingly well. Hunters can also equip a buckler or similar small shield for a bit of damage mitigation, but with some smart point management you can have a shield, a rapier, a bow, some decent leather armour and the ability to quick roll. Really fun class.

I am about to face the "Phallanx" and only have three turpentine. I wonder should apply it to the arrows or the axe (or are they interchangeable no matter what weapon I use for that specified amount of time)?

Phallanx was rather easy as far as i remember him, just dont stop moving and try killing as much as possible of his minions before engaging him. As for the thief class - i play like one and i guess it has its lows more than its hihgs, though yet i managed to die only once in 1-1, just as long you learn some magic and get some good weapons and armor (i mainly use a spear and some light armor to be more mobile plus the fire resistant shield from 1-1 dragons nest) youll be just fine.
You're far away from learning any magic spells. I would just stock up on healing items & try to kill as many/all minions before attacking Phalanx from behind. Unfortunately, the luck stat only affects item drop rate & is fairly useless. It's usually recommended to only put points in that when it's your last stat remaining (as in, when everything else is 99). You can buy additional firebombs in the secret shop in Boletaria Castle for 500 souls each.aryanr said:Thanks. You can learn magic after 3-1, my advice for the armor and equipment was for the later levels. you can kill Phallanx with your axe dont worry, just start killing his minions one by one and then attack him from behind him as somebody else already suggested. oh youl have so much fun in 1-2 :lol .aryanr said:Thanks. 1-x through 5-x are just what we call the levels in order of where they're placed in the Nexus, going clockwise from 1 (Boletarian Palace) to 5 (Valley of Defilement).
The "x" in 1-x just means the 1st or 2nd or 3rd or 4th part of that level.

I would recommend that you get it up to at least 10.
A few of the magic tricks will be useful even if you don't focus your character on it, like Poison Cloud for taking down dragons and some of the really tough guys like the Old King. Water Veil is nice as well, especially for the Flamelurker battle.

Ok just got this game and holy shit is this game hard for an RPG. I started as a female barbarian because I'm a perv and wanted a scantily clad avatar. After hours of rage and obscenities I went to read this and various threads and found out Barbarian is a hard class to start off with. Well shit. But my character was so meticulously customized and looked oh so sexy which is hard to pull off considering what I had to work with. I'm not starting over and going through that shit again! After a gajillion deaths and enough swear words to fill up a 5 gallon jug of quarters, I finally got to Phalanx and whooped dat ass. Oh so satisfying. This game is amazing! Now to find some co-op action...

The key to beating Phalanx as a barbarian is patience. The minute you over-extend is when you'll get hit by three spears and die.
Attack the minions that are away from the herd first. Attack from behind, attacking from the front is useless. Once the stragglers are all dead, methodically kill each minion on Phalanx. When injured, hide behind a pillar to eat a grass. If you have firebombs, save them for attacking the main body with all of the minions on it.
It's no way task for someone new to the game, but gets easier with practice.

With regards to slaying the phallanx, I have not yet done it (went to sleep). Someone suggested that I use firebomb on him and I realized that I already used them up earlier in another part of the level T_T

You'll see soon enough when you beat him, but when picking a world from the Nexus you can choose to go directly to 1-2, 1-3 etc. as long as you have beaten the boss from the previous level.
You've noticed how you don't have to travel all the way through the level again whenever you want to fight Phalanx again? That's one of the great things about the level design in this game. Provided you unlocked the shortcut, there's always a quicker way back to the boss if you die fighting him.

As for beating him, fire helps but you don't need it. Just keep pecking away at the mini phalaxes until you have an opening. Also, it helps to use the pillars as cover from their spear attacks, using the shield to block them will lead to you staggering and taking damage. Just attack a few times, duck behind a pillar while they attack and repeat.
Still doesn't work. I guess you just have to find a nice little hiding spot and stay there when the phone rings. The worst is having to leave the game while you're in body form.

I had a hard time finding The Monumental too. People had put messages right in front of her, and she is kind of small and surrounded by people who look like her anyways. The messages through me off, because it meant that I got a 'show message' as I ran on by, rather than 'talk'. And I spent at least 20 minutes trying to talk to that giant statue before discovering that The Monumental was a small person on the lower level of that upper walkway.aryanr said:

I wanted know how do I differentiate between the Demon's Soul and general souls for upgrading. I talked to the Lady in Black for enhancing my soul and in the menu all it lists are the number of souls I have at my disposal. However, I was told not to use the Demon's Souls (boss) for upgrading the character and instead using it to attain special weapons or magic.

The Demon's souls are items you can use. They will not add themselves to your "current" souls. You can deposit them in the bank until you know what to do with them.

Ok guys, I need some advice. I'm done with all the worlds except 1-4. I don't want to finish the game yet, so I'm planning on turning the worlds to black tendency so I can farm items and equipment. My question is: Is the world tendency affected by all the players or just me? I don't want to turn a world black and all of a sudden is white again because someone killed a boss in his/her playthrough. Should I play offline or it doesn't matter?

If you are going to change WT it's best to do it offline because online the server may switch it back to neutral when you get it to pure black.Dizzy-4U said:
