Destiny - The Taken King |OT| Time to Explain

Damn, Hunters getting no love again? I haven't had a chance to use Nightstalker yet, but the Titan and Warlock supers look way more useful (and fun). Hunters are awesome, but the lame armor and okay subclasses (especially for high end PVE) is frustrating.

Nightstalker bronades are the real mvp.

Or maybe you're expecting too much from a 24 hour period?

I admit I've only played a day and I've been lucky enough to end up around LL257. I was lucky enough to be gifted almost all my gear from Dead Orbit though. They were nice enough to give me an AR, Shotgun, Fusion, Rocket, Ghost, Gloves, Boots, and Titan Mark.

Either way though, the new system is built in a way to keep offering you rewards. If you are at LL150, then every piece of gear you get is going to be ATK/DEF 155-180. If you are LL220, then you're going ot get ATK/DEF 225-250, and so on.

Thus, you will progress no matter how you play the game.

I think it only works for you though. If you are no my team and tag somebody, I can't see the tag.

lol i'm not expecting to become legend in 24 hours. but it would be nice to be able to do my quests. i keep getting a bunch of loot but 90% of it sucks.

From what I've heard you can infuse an item with another item of EQUAL or lesser value.

So if you got a 280 helmet, you can infuse it with another 280 helmet, and end up with a higher armor helmet.

TIL, I thought you needed something of greater light to infuse into something of lesser.

I asked earlier but is there any word on what Xur will take for currency? Everyone still assuming it's strange coins? Debating on what to do with my marks. Probably just hold on to them until Friday.

Lol wtf? I'm barely 230 on my main and I've played about the same amount.

Seems like there will be more utility for PVE stuff. The bow will tether to groups of enemies, and there are perks to drop more orbs. It seems like more of a support subclass rather than a straight up kill stuff subclass. Tethering enemies and slowing them and making them take more damage, upping recovery/armor for allies, dropping more orbs, etc.

If you played old Destiny a lot, convert your old currencies.

I had about 500 Motes of Light, It takes about 50 motes to level up a Faction (I chose Dead Orbit).

On top of that, you can turn in Weapon Parts (had about 1200), old Armor parts (had about 900), and even Ammo Synths (had about 120) (like all those special ammo packs from House of Wolves chest farming).

Then, I realized I could turn in all my old Ascendant shards (had about 600) to the speaker in exchange for MORE MOTES!

Then I realized I could turn in all my old Ascendeant energy (had about 500), into shards, and thus into MORE MOTES!

Then I realized I could do the same thing with Radiant stuff from Crota.

Long story, short: Check out the rep gain stuff at your local Faction Vendor.

Would I be able to get into this if I never played the original Destiny 1.0?

Trying to figure out if I'll be able to get into this or not.

even though i've already played through vanilla destiny and quit after a month or so i'm considering just starting a brand new character and doing everything from scratch. is that something the veterans in here would recommend against?

I realized this and then decided not to go that route. I think part of the problem some people are having is they short circuited the progression routes by dumping bounties and mats in tremendous volumes and then are wondering why every loot drop is not amazing.

I'm still at the point where every activity I've run so far has left me with new or improved gear. I want to hold onto that feeling (*Journey song interlude here*) so I'm going to dole out my mats to help me along rather than take huge jumps. I just find it more fun that way.

I wish Bungie had set the raid for a week after TTK came out. I think a lot of people took the strategy of power leveling and it took some of the fun out of it; the three day window basically told everyone to crunch.

I did the same thing, and had a good time. My new Warlock is currently level 24 or so and will be doing the Taken King quests soon. It was fun going through the new progression paths and seeing how the base game was reorganized. But then, as I said above, I just enjoy the experience of progressing and leveling, so I don't mind the reset.

To each his own.

I have my power level character, my Titan. For making sure I get a chance to discover things before the internet discovers everything for me.

I have my slow and steady wins the race character, my Hunter. This is for really taking my time and enjoying the Taken King at my own pace.

I have my born again character, my Warlock. This is for restarting the game and seeing what it's like to be a brand new player again.

Nope, several of us have done just that.

ok, good to know. i really enjoyed the campaign of vanilla destiny while it lasted so i don't think it would be a big deal to start all over. plus, it's been about a year since i played it. also, i think starting from the very beginning may make understanding all of the changes to the leveling easier. i'm going to play with my two younger nephews, so the question is if i'll be able to convince them to dump their old characters and start over. they are teenagers so they are lazy haha.

So am I right in thinking the purple triangles that surround certain missions are there to help you with story progression making the most sense or have I missed the point entirely?

The Purple triangles in the Director (the level select screen) are just there to tell you that you have a quest that can be progressed here.

I just reach lv 40. How do I get legendary marks to buy stuff?

I'm doing something similar. My Hunter is at the vanguard, going through the Taken King content and bringing the best gear I could from year 1 along the way. I actually used the MIDA through all eight story missions; it was a nice farewell to it.

For my Titan, I reduced her weapons and armor to just one item in each slot. She'll go into it as a 34, but have to cycle into new weapons and gear builds pretty quickly to become flexible.

My Warlock was born again last Tuesday with 2.0.

At any rate, I was referring specifically to power leveling very far and fast via mat dumps, and then evaluating the end game loot drops. I still need lots of time to work through it, but its seems to me that might cause a planned progression path to go awry. Bungie put that option in place so they clearly knew folks would do it - and the raid timing made people feel compelled to do so - but I don't think it puts you in a good position to evaluate the endgame loot, at least not yet.

Hm, constantly have a Taken King mission icon above the tower (map). Can't find anything that it leads to. I've finished the core-quests, doing various side ones but no idea how to resolve this!

So there is no longer a better use for Ascendant Shards/Energy?

Because of Taken King, I'll be stepping into the world of Destiny for the first time. How daunting, haha.

Oh well, it can't possibly be as impenetrable as getting into dota for the first time.

Meh, I held onto about 20 of each just in case. But I'm pretty sure the only use is for upgrading weapons/armor from the Vault of Glass.

I'm still surprised they were not phased out entirely. When HoW hit and excised the concept of shards/energies, I thought they'll pull them from the future year 1 drops for the raids.

Visit every vendor including holliday they all have missions now.

I had the same thing and it wasn't obvious to see her over by the ships

Bungie seems to want avoid changing the material requirements for older weapons. I think this goes with the fear of "invalidating player effort" that Luke Smith talked about when saying that they regretted the Radiant Shard requirements for Crota but weren't going to change it.

Crucible bounty is still hell. Even with the cheap way of only equipping TLW word when you have super/heavy. Finally made positive gains and am at 83%.

Earlier I was doing Patrol on Earth and had a grip of engrams on the ground that I couldn't grab due to having a full inventory on me. When I went to the tower, though, I only had one waiting for me. What's up with that? I ran over them all several times before entering orbit, too. Aren't they all supposed to be waiting for you at the Postmaster?

What role does light level play? Does it still gate high level content?

It should, btw.

Yes.

I don't have a problem with light level, but if people were confused by that (wut?) then the new system doesn't really make it any easier to understand.

At least attack and defense isn't 33% difference if you're underleveled.

Let's be honest, its inherit in the genre that there will always be SOME grind.

Honestly, grind is part of the fun. If the game just gave you everything it wouldn't be fun.

The problem with vanilla was more a lack of direction post-level cap and that doesn't seem to happen here.

But grinding for better gear is what the game is about and I'm glad it stays this way. TTK is just a massively improved version of that.
