Develop: Sony studios have started PS4 projects, Xbox Next aiming for 2013 launch

MS would be stupid to not have Blu-ray in the next Xbox. For games and watching Blu-ray movies. They don't want you turning their system off.

While I expect they will release games in the Fall, I'm thinking they will have as few as possible so they can have a very large launch/first year line-up during 2013.

Yeah. And they won't/shouldn't have the same amount of brand new, high-level hardware components confounding and delaying the release like last time.

i think its a safe bet to say they will not be using DVD9s again.

I hear ya :) I'm rarely an early adopter on new hardware anyway, though. For me, there are too many benefits for waiting (i.e. less chance of malfunctions, price drops, package deals, redesigns, etc).

Eh, the way I see it is if the problem is rampant again Sony and microsoft will be forced to replace your console for the first 2-3 years again. I figure by the fourth year I am probably going to end up getting a slim model system anyways and wont feel bad about my initial investment.

I mean heck, I dont keep a cell phone for 4 years, or my daily laptop for 4 years. If I get 4 -5 years out of a console I will feel ok with it. Plus by the 4-5th year the console should have dropped in price and added harddrive space and probably bundled a game or so I want. So replacing it wont be as big of a hit.

so 2 years at the earliest..

I honestly hope it takes longer, every year that goes by holding onto this gen of consoles is another year the PC looks better and price for good gaming machine is cheaper.
I know there has been more people that are trickling back to PC gaming lately and I think as the hardcore gets more anxious for a next gen more will transition to PC instead of waiting.

PC will benefit when the next Xbox and PS4 launch. No more 360/PS3 ports to PC.

I'm one of those, and I can't fucking wait for next-gen.

I still dont understand this logic, if your a PC gamer you WANT next gen to start.

99% of developers are making the current gen consoles their lead platform and slapping on a few bells and whistles for the PC versions.

Current Gen systems are holding your high end rigs back!

Oh it will benefit from the parity of tech DX11 or DX 12 quality effects ect. but the longer it takes the cheaper the PC will be that can comparably play them.

Its a pretty obvious truth that in 2005 this gens consoles were pretty amazing compared to what you could get on PC graphically. I'm not sure how this next gen will be able to out preform .at launch...should be interesting to see tho.

Doesn't matter. They should have options. Blu-ray is here to stay and there's no sense in not using it.

I'm highly doubting Sony let's their arrogance ride on into next-gen, and give MS a year early launch. That hurt them nearly as much as the price of the hardware I believe. The other area that Sony has to really capitalize on is that they have a major edge in first-party developers. No "last hurrahs" from developers this time, get them all on the new hardware asap and get something going for the launch window with them all. As far as I'm concerned, considering that earliest would be 2013, the current systems are basically dead to me, I don't want to see their top studios putting out a game that would have been better off on vastly more powerful hardware. Let the third parties play around with your current hardware yet for the next two years. Sony needs to, and is probably looking to swing things around this time, and this is how you do it.

I'd also expect this time that we'll finally see a revised standard controller actually happen.

Then you have the interesting aspect of next-gen games where F2P may actually become adopted into the consoles.

All I know is, I can't wait for trailer-wars at next E3! Always feel like a kid with new hardware announcements.

Judging by the Vita, it'll almost be like they went and built it at Best Buy. :lol

These next 2 years are gonna be tough for console graphics. They already look at least a generation behind PC games.

Fortunately the majority of console gamers don't know that.

Yes there is a reason. Steve Jobs called that reason a "bag of hurt" and he was on the board of directors for the Blu-ray association! The most forward thinking of all computer companies still has yet to put a single Blu-ray drive in any of their computers.

I agree, God of War 2 should have been a PS3 title.

Whatever happened to that optical disc tech that can hold hundreds of gigabytes and is compatible with current BD drives?

I think a couple of games will initially look better because of optimization. Developers are working on a closed platform and therefore will be able to optimize the power of the system and get better results than having to develop a game that can be played across multitudes of different rigs.

There will be one or two demos or games that will probably blow peoples minds. However I feel like the PC will be able to match it pretty much day one.

What exactly do they have in 2012?

Twisted Metal, Last Guardian, are about the only two I can think of off the top of my head. Any others?

Heck what would their "tentpole" holiday 012 release be (something like Gears 3, Uncharted 3)? Am I missing something obvious?

I think having more market share when the next gen systems start is more important.

since early adoption rates are always low if a Next gen game wants to sell that 4million copies that first 2 years, they wont neglect the PC market the way some have now.

The last 2 years have seen some really great PC games and healthy sales of games on the Platform as well. The longer the next gen takes the more Versions of games coming out On PC that are vastly superior graphically will get more sales on PC from the hardcore that won't wait for a new console.

Maybe for other things, but I think the ONE place high capacity physical media still unquestionably makes sense, is high end video games.

Physical disc sales may be dying off for everything else, but the one place they're healthy is consoles.

I agree.

I felt this way during the transition from ps1 to ps2 and then from xbox/ps2 to 360. (Man I'm getting old)

Right around 4 to 5 years into a console life I start to get underwhelmed by pretty much even the best graphical games on consoles. Probably because it seems at least one or two companies have pretty much maxed out the system so graphics just cant wow me like they used to. I then start seeing what PC's can do - like with the GTAIV mods, Battlefield 3 and The Witcher 2 - and I start itching for a new console.

It started creeping in earlier this year and I can only imagine it will get even worse going into next year.

Oh, totally. For gaming I totally agree but for other uses... not so much. Steaming is the future. I don't think these companies will pay for the licensing of full Blu-ray because it won't be needed. Sony obviously has other reasons why their system needs it just like their support for 3D. They have other products to sell you that depend on the technology. MS and Nintendo couldn't care less.

Starhawk and Sly 4 are the other two, but all of those should be out in the first half (except perhaps The Last Guardian, which is half way to vaporware).

Edit:

Oh, and MLB: The Show, but that's annual.

God of War 4 would have been the most obvious choice for a Fall 2012 game, but that it didn't show up makes me wonder if it's being saved as a launch PS4 title.

- Sly 4
- Twisted Metal
- Starhawk
- Ni No Kuni
- Jak Collection
- The Last Guardian

+ Maybe games from Quantic Dream and the GoW team, since their last games are from 2010.

Has the The Last Guardian been shown in playable form to anyone outside of Sony?

A console without an optical drive will be DOA in any country without unlimited broadband. Or just DOA everywhere like the PSP Go.

So, Sly 4, Starhawk, MLB the Show, Last Guardian, and Twisted Metal. None of those really strike me as being big enough to be tentpole holiday games, but I guess one could be shoehorned into the role.

For Microsoft I can think of even less. While they do have a obvious holiday tentpole in Halo 4, that's literally all I can think of. Maybe some Kinect games (Rhyse?).

Sadly it seems Microsoft no longer bothers with first half of the year hardcore exclusives at all. Which while GAF (and I) may hate it, may actually make sense as a strategy.

But whatever the case, both companies lineups look pretty thin in 12. It would seem perhaps the gen is winding down.

E3 2013 reveal? I expect them to announce it at next years E3 but not go into too much info about it so they can build up hype for E3 2013

From a company perspective an announcement that early makes no sense. Why would you ever want to give your customers a reason to not buy your current console?

Of course the rumor mill will be rolling by E3 2012, but it's better to deny it up until you really have to publically announce the product, which is about 6 months prior to launch.

I suspect Guerrilla's new IP will be on PS3 while Killzone 4 is on PS4.

Santa Monica implied they wanted one game out fast and one out slightly later, so that would kind of imply a PS3/PS4 split as well.

Quantic Dream, well it will be an adventure game so PS3 makes a lot of sense.

Sucker Punch though I think might be PS4. They're early enough to be PS3 still, but I don't see the real benefit to Sony to doing so unless they want one notable Spring 2013 PS3 title.

Gran Turismo 6?

God of War 4?

Mod Nation Racers 2?

But for 90% of those games coming to PC the lead platform will still be consoles, which means you still will have those high end rigs only really getting to use the brunt of their power for a handful of games each year. And almost none of them will be as optimized as they could be if the lead platforms were closer to the specs of those higher end rigs.

I get it that you think the longer cycle will lead to more people jumping ship from console to PC. And that you think that will lead to more PC adopters.

Personally I think those that do move to PC gaming arent going to be enough to create the sort of industry shift of focus you think it will. The vast majority of console only gamers are going to stay that way. A small percentage may fracture off and join the ranks but I think a lot of people will see a 2012 E3 announcement and wait for the next gen systems instead of buying a 600-800 dollar rig as a 1-2 year holdover when they can buy a 399-499 console a year or so later.

I do think the delivery method for PC games has helped PC gamers because companies know they make a good profit from it now. So I think you will continue to get some very heavy focus going forward. I still say that for any PC gamer, starting next gen sooner rather than later is in their own best interest. I think the only way such a quantum shift would really happen is if the next gen transition took literally 3 years or more to get going and some company really managed to market the PC in a way that is as hassle free as buying and playing on a console.

Not sure I follow as the PS3 was announced 17 months before launch and it never hurt sales of the PS2.

I probably won't be getting a new console until there's a price cut. Plus I'm pretty sure more of the bullshit from this gen is gonna spill over to next gen, which makes me even less enthusiastic about playing video games at all.

In terms of first party games for PS3 there isnt a whole lot. Although you could add Agent to that list. An exclusive Rockstar game with all the advertising blitz they bring should be a good seller for them.

But remember there is still your annual CoD's, Madden's, NBA games, and numerous multiplatform games that should get some pretty good sales like: Bioshock Infinite, Far Cry 3, Prey 2, Resident Evil Raccoon City, Soulcaliber V, Borderlands 2, and that new Tomb Raider and maybe Devil's Third. Maybe not any behemoth games for PS3 like God of War(though who knows it may be possible they are holding off revealing it) but it should still be solid enough to get both of them to 2013. From 2013 onward though its a whole lot of nothing.

It is strange for Sony to have such an empty line-up at this time of year, but maybe they've finally taken a cue from Microsoft's book? Something's bound to be announced at VGA's, though.
