Digital Foundry: Alan Wake 2 PS5 Pro Tech Review - Pro vs PS5 - PSSR vs DLSS - Pro RT vs PC

Yep just look at HFW on Pro in comparison.
That game doesn't use PSSR right?

PSSR struggles right now with image stability and noise, it's worse in this game since internal resolution and settings are lower than in other games, but Ratchet for example had this same problem, or Hogwarts.

Also just like with Hogwarts, adding more RT features versus the PS5 version seem like a bad idea, guess due to being an AMD card after all, maybe they should just focus on raising the non-RT settings for these versions instead in the future

What does OLED have to do with it?
30fps doesn’t look or feel great on OLED TVs, apparently.

OT: Yeah, this is a rough version, despite the increase in RT quality over the base PS5. But I mean, this also shouldn’t be a surprise either? Remedy have never really done console ports well, with the exception of maybe Quantum Break. Their games are definitely more PC-centric. Hopefully they can patch AW2 on the Pro to be more stable, though! A great game like this deserves to run the best it can for new Pro owners.

Also interesting that SX remains the, “best” way to play for this game specifically on console.

Imagine my shock that 800p don't scale well to 4k...

Still do not get why Remedy decided to throw more effects into the game rather than raise the resolution.

HeisenbergFX4 HeisenbergFX4 Are current ps5 pro versions just weak ports or is this really all the ps5 pro can muster...because its underwhelming to say the least. I remember you mentioned devs saying it would perform close to a 4070 in realtime games but so far it isn't close. I mean even in raytracing workloads its just underwhelming.

I said this in another thread. Fsr ain't that bad, it's the low resolution that some devs use that make it look so bad.

The Sony first party games looked great anyway so the pro updates looked great to.

But once devs start feeding low res into pssr it will just look as shit as fsr 🤷‍♂️

This game isn’t representative of the Pro. It’s arguably its worst performer.

They've been like that since Xbox 360. Alan Wake was once 720p on the X360 before they lowered the resolution to 540p in favor of higher visual effects.

Maybe later versions of PSSR will be able to handle this as well as DLSS did, but what Remedy is putting out now, there is really no excuse for this. They can see how it runs and how it looks long before DF got a hold of it. Times like these are when I wish consoles had the ability to turn on/off specific settings like on PC.

Rebirth has this problem as well. The upscaler is unstable.

It might be but the pro is underperforming in just about every port so far, especially underwhelming in rt workloads considering that was supposed to be the main improvement in the architecture.

Or is it just one of Phil's balls in my throat?
Damn, this is true test to upscale quality:

I wouldn't recommend anyone using DLSS with lower than 1080p internal res on 4k output but it clearly handles things better than PSSR at lower res.

In video whole image is also very unstable on PS5 Pro.

oof yeah, not a flattering example.

The first picture looks like there's a mesh pattern running all across the screen, most notable over the deerfest sign.

Gane in rt mode looks good enough for me.
I tried performance but settled for quality.
I like how the games looks in rt its just more realistic

Silent Hill doesn't have an official Pro patch yet. So it is probably running into issues where a "boost" setting needs to be turned off on the console itself, or they just need to patch it up proper.
I thought it did? It’s showing Pro Enhanced…

There was nothing in patch notes about Pro support and people claim to be still be waiting.

The last patch was the hotfix 3 weeks ago (v1.05). People are still waiting on the Pro patch.

PSSR has a long way to go, as does RT on Playstation, it appears. Pretty poor case study here. Once you hit the Pro with a rendering challenge like AW2 it just collapses. Even a 3070 wipes it out because it has better RT and RR.

There will be other development houses that will do more with better results. This is not the thesis, no matter the spin.

The only other game with rendering as advanced as AW2 is Cyberpunk 2077. And I think it will fare comparatively bad on the Pro should they do an update for it.

But sure, let's wait and see if other developers pick up the rendering challenge. Nvidia DLSS and RR for RT heavy games is just so far ahead of what the Pro can do.

Not even DLSS holds up in 'Ultra Performance' mode, not sure why they'd use it here. Probably get a more stable image with more detail preserved with 1440p FSR 'Balanced' then upscale to 4K from there.

This comparison just shows how advanced Nvidia's AI gaming suite is. Sure DLSS is in a league of it's own, but the RT Ray Reconstruction is crazy good on the 4070. The reflections look so clear and stable.

But ray tracing gaiz!! Turn that shit off if it's gonna be noisier and grainier than those porn channels on TV that required a premium subscription, otherwise, you'd only get the sound.

Star Wars Outlaws with a Pro update vs PC would be a nice comparison.

Alan Wake 2 is most of the most technologically impressive video games on the market today, so its transition onto PlayStation 5 Pro should be a match made in heaven, right? Oliver Mackenzie and Alex Battaglia shares notes on their experience with the new version of the game, highlighting the strengths and weaknesses of the upgrade, along with PC upscaler and ray tracing comparisons.

Alan Wake 2 is “one of the most technologically impressive video games” but it’s a whole year old already. Are there technically better games on the Ps5 pro? How are the the Unreal Engine 5 titles performing?
