Digital Foundry vs. Forza Motorsport 5

I thought last pic is Forza? I don't remember DriveClub showing city track.

Yes, it has to be. DAT night racing clearly looks like Forza's.

Holy shit?

Really?

I kind of wonder why people venture into Digital Foundry threads for games they clearly have no interest in.
Hoping to find some cherry picked screenshot to fuel the console wars ?

Yikes.

This reminds me of GT5. What's up with jpeg compression though?

Absolutely

People need to realize that.

Lets be fair here, this is a launch title. People are tearing this game to shreds over some 2d crowds and aliasing during a launch release. I distinctly remember another big name title being released after many many delays last gen that made up over half its content with assets from the generation nefore, a horribly inconsistent frame rate, aliasing everywhere and the entire time hid all of that until the very last second, but we never heard the end of it was the definitive title. If they could get away with that, Im not sure how these minor discrepencies at launch are such a big deal.

So 1080p does matter now?? I'm confused?

It matters for Xbone games, because achieving 1080p on that thing is near impossible :P

Jokes aside, Forza does look nice if a bit sterile. Aliasing isn't that much of a problem at the speeds you're going, and the locked 60fps is pretty sweet.

Yikes at those jaggies on the spoiler and the leaf textures dont look 'next gen'!!!!!!

Welcome to release window games i guess for both sides!!

Look at the tarmac or anything remotely resembling a solid shape.

Notice the compression artifacts the size of your fist.

There's no comparison to be made here before some direct-feed footage shows up. :)

Been playing all night with it and i'm having a shitload of fun, the first race in Prague was mind blowing for how good it looked on a 55"

After all the "downgrade this, downgrade that" i was almost worried for the final product

Now i couldn't care less, love it

how far back are you sitting?

Doing trilinear instead of anisotropic is a rather strange choice for a driving sim. Bilinear with AF4x would've been better visually with the same perfomance hit. I'm actually surprised that even in this gen we're getting games with less than tlf+af16x texture filtering. This shit must be a standard for next gen games.

I'm willing to bet that the people who actually own the game agree.

Evidenced by the fact that the only people bringing the doom and gloom in this thread are those who are relying on the article for their impressions.

Why do developers seem to not be able to implement some decent AF? Seriously, most of the launch games' textures look like shit because of it, and it's just infuriating.

AF is piss poor on most games on both consoles. Shit is sad.

I mean, by all accounts good AF nowadays shouldn't impact performance in any noticeable way whatsoever. Are devs just assuming that regular Joes won't notice the piss-poor distance texture quality? I'd really like some technically-inclined people, or actual developers/programmers, to provide some input on this matter.

Who cares about crowds when you are actually playing the game? (not watching screenshots) You are supposed to rush past them in 200 km/h. Other aspects of the graphics are much more important to spend processing power on.

i am so glad that 1080p is important all over again.

It is pretty curious how sometimes it is important and sometimes it is not important.

We need to stop comparing DriveClub with Forza. Hell, the gameplay captures of DriveClub being compared aren't even the latest build. They sorted out the aliasing issues already.

No doubt Forza 6 will be a big upgrade. But I do wonder how much given their short development window and the need to do an entire overhaul of the graphics engine (full dynamic lighting and shadowing, geometrical foliage, night, day etc).

I was a big complainer of the jaggies after playing the demo at the MS store. but playing the full game last night at home definitely changed my mind. There are still moments where the game can be a bit too jaggy, when the camera pans around the car while it is still pre race, is when it was most noticeable. but holy shit i couldn't believe how clean the game was during the races. Game looks amazing, especially in motion.

Does it look amazing.......or does it look......next gen amazing!

Looking at those .jpg's...yikes...but I've put in almost 2 hours into this game and honestly I think it's gorgeous...not once have I noticed any of these issues even though clearly they are there. On the contrary I can't believe how beautiful the game is...not sure how to reconcile the two???

I played Forza in a huge ass HDTV. The Aliasing is noticeable before and after races, while playing however you can't really notice it, since there's blurry effects and stuff. It looks great, very next gen.

Bit disappointed the article didn't talk about other stuff besides resolution and PP. Thi lighting is still what bugs me the most about Forza, especially after seeing the more recent DC footage.

All they talk about is graphics graphics graphics? Without that it just looks like a standard plain racing game.

Seriously every single thing I've read about this game, (and drive club and GT) is graphics graphics graphics.

Bor ring.

What exactly does Forza 5 offer over Forza 4? Other than slightly higher polygons and a more advanced shader for the tarmac?

The devs did players a solid by making more microtransactions so you don't have to play it as much to get all the content if you are pressed for time and absolutely need all the content.

Yep i watched a stream last night with 2 people who have bought both copnsoles as they are Youtubers and they were floored by the graphics in this, they thought NFS: Rivals on PS4 looked terrible in comparison (they streamed that last week on the PS4 launch).

Comparing photomode pics is a bit pointless to be honest.

If they represented the in-game visuals, then GT5 would would destroy next-gen :P

yeah, and just when you thought a game looked good someone posts a phototravel pic of GT5 that puts things back in perspective ; (

Yikes, Forza 5 doesn't look very good. The E3 demo looked better than anything out there. Amazing how much of a visual downgrade there has been in the final game. The poor IQ sticks out like a sore thumb.

I think it's easy to find shit looking stuff in any game if you want to..

I opened my XB1 last night after deciding to keep it, and I've spent quite a few hours on FM5 now..

Sure, it has some pretty ropey bits in it if you look for them,

I do laugh at the crowd.. they can be reasonably high-res if unless you start zooming in ridiculously.. here's Dan chillin' with some office dudes..

However, as with the comments above, the actual game is pretty decent, the texture work and overall effect in-motion is pretty impressive indeed, I am about 1.5 Feet away from a 24" monitor on my racing rig, and it looks pretty decent, I've certainly been impressed more times then I've been disappointed..

I'm sure it's competition will step things up graphically, and good on them, as long as they maintain a rock solid 60 and have decent audio, physics, collisions, etc, then it'll give T10 something to improve upon.

And that's not forgetting that this is a launch game, it's rushed, it feels monetised to hell, and it's a shame they wheren't given the extra time, but we are where we are..

I can't wait for my PS4, and I'll have the best of both consoles, so I can stay well and truly out the confirmation bias shit that people are pulling..

Have you played it? Just asking.. I was down on it's visuals when I saw the first streams the other day, but I've been very happy after getting some time on it.. I'd suggest people getting too 'concerned' make some effort to see it in the flesh before condemning it..
