Digital Foundry vs. Forza Motorsport 5

BTW I am really unimpressed with the smoke in Forza 5. I watched GiantBomb stream yesterday, and they were spinning and doing donuts, with almost zero smoke. :(

So 1080p does matter now?? I'm confused?

Because it doesn't look "next gen". Screen space subsurface scattered paint jobs with much higher detailed cars and high res PC quality textures, running at 125% more pixel resolution and higher polygon models than the latest achievable Forza, which already had 10x more polygons than the launch Forza on 360, all while still running at a blazing 60fps on a rushed launch title?

It's hard not to judge opinions and say they're not stemming from this game being on Xbox One. The agenda being: "This game is only running 1080p because it's visuals are last gen". or "These reflections and shadows are baked" which has nothing to do with what you're actually seeing (Because the effect is beautiful) instead a technical decision that directly questions the hardware capability vs what you notice different on screen, the only difference being day/night transitions during the same race, which although cool, does not change how the reflection or shadows in Forza 5 are perceived at a locked time of day, mainly because inside the vehicle and from the players point of view, all the shadows and reflections are dynamic for the players.

I was told to do this. Drive up to a rail, pause the game and notice where a shadow is being cast on a low vehicle, then select a taller vehicle, drive up to the same rail and notice if the shadow is being cast higher... umm, that's just plain ridiculous, is that what it's come down to? Is that what people do in games now a days? cause I was just running the game going blazing fast and wowed by the awesome textures, beautiful vistas and buttery smooth 60fps, and boy how sweet it is.... sooo smooth :-)

Framerate is king. But this is coming from somebody who likes to race competitively.

If you just want something pretty, then maybe.

It most definitely does. Huge improvement from 360/PS3.

It most definitely does not. The comparison video between Forza 4 on 360 on Forza 5 on the XB1 shows that the improvements are minor, at best. The game simply does not wow like it did at E3.

I haven't played Forza 5, but would it not be fair to say that if your game is going to look unflattering in screenshots, if it's a racing game it won't be that noticeable while you're playing? It's the one genre where I'd be more willing to accept visual sacrifices to maintain 1080p 60fps.

I would remove those crowds though.

Horizon looked cleaner than this.
That Horizon has less aliasing isn't surprising, really.

As far as geometric aliasing is concerned, Horizon uses a 1440p backbuffer; nearly twice the size of Forza 5's. And that 1440p is using an MSAA sample pattern, which means it's dealing with geometric aliasing much more efficiently than Forza 5's ordered grid.

And as far as other aliasing is concerned... Horizon's visual makeup is constructed out of fewer things that are susceptable. Less thin specular highlights and stuff.

The lower resolution means that I wouldn't expect Horizon to look as sharp as Forza 5, but I would expect it to be much more visually stable.

Never looked visually impressive. They sacrificed a lot to make launch and to have the 1080p60fps tagline. So they can gloat about their bigger launch list but this is the price you pay.

indeed. i can't believe how many people are/were saying that this is graphically the most impressive next gen game....

To that I say, be careful who you choose to believe. I'm not going to judge anyone's opinion, personally I think Ryse and Killzone are the top of the top, but let me just say that it's more likely to get the truth from an official source, than a playstation fan with an agenda ;-)

However, there's no ignoring the rough-looking foliage and cockpit interior details that go entirely untreated here. In other words, it's without a doubt an advance over the previous Forza standards in visual fidelity, but not the knockout blow we had expected in this category.
everything about this sentence irritates me.why do they have to insert the "we had expected" line?

Man the jagged edges are pretty horrendous. Look at the shader aliasing on the water. Horrible.

Liquidi Mario Lake :D

Having tested F5 I can make these statements:

1) Less aggressive lod than Forza 4 on the cars (aggressive lod on the rims :( )
2) Aliasing
3) Juddering or stuttering during collisions against opponent or wall (the same juddering/stuttering of Forza 3-4)
4) lack of good texturing filter except for the car
5)very poor smoke effect
6) I don't think that we'll see nice trees or forest in a 60fps racing game ;)
7) pre baked illumination. The snow on the side edge of swiss alps is trasparent/inconsistent.
8) enviroment mapping on the automotive is 60fps, isn't it? (I was playing with inside cam all the time)

It arguably was back at E3. I don't know what the hell happened since then.

well, back then it was a prerendered movie that used uber high poly (up to 1m) assets and 16xAA or even downsampling.

Then, they had to make it..you know, interactive :P

Same thing happening all the time with that "other racing sim" on console, really.
To be fair, those "other developers" don't t write ACTUAL IN GAME FOOTAGE on their trailers though.

While IQ and models are far from those trailers', though, the game still looks great; certainly one of the best looking next gen launch games.

This thread reminds me of a bunch of people standing in front of the Mona Lisa complaining about some brush marks. Forza 5 is not perfect by any means. But attempting to call it 'ugly' really requires some alternative reality gymnastics. Is it possible to isolate some elements that don't look perfect? It is. But in motion, to me this game is absolutely beautiful.

However, different strokes I guess. If you believe this game is 'ugly' that's completely your perogative. I guess what bugs me about a lot of the 'resolution wars' stuff is that its all technical, and not very related to gameplay. When I play this game at 1080P and 60 frames per second, rolling around the Swiss alps in cockpit view, I honestly feel like I'm looking at real life. Cannot WAIT for Forza Horizon 2.

dear god, I'd prefer 900p with some AA

that's horrendous

This I could get behind. Frame rate drops are unacceptable in a game like this, but I could easily live with 900p for some AA. Especially with Ryse basically being the best looking game out there right now.

Having said that, the game still is a big step up from last gen and the people in here acting like it isn't are nuts.

Wait wait, let's pull the camera a little bit back for Forza 5.

Shit zoom back in, zoom the fuck back in!!@#$

Seriously? Forza 5 seriously has painted trees for that distance in the background? And then Mortal Kombat style FMV sprite crowds?

My lord that is AWFUL. Haven't seen that done in a game in a very long time.

Are we sure this machine really has 5GB of RAM usable?
I'm playing Grid 2 with a 6770 @ 60fps and that game utterly destroys this.

Did you really just compare Forza 5 to the Mona Lisa?

You realize how contradictory those two sentences are? The reason why you feel like your looking at real life is because of those technical decisions. Turn10 decided for 1080p 60fps for a reason, because it does enhance gameplay. They're not mutually exclusive

No AA and no AF (or very low AF) it seems. They should have kept the game looking the same as at E3, if that was indeed running on actual XB1. I've heard reports it had minor frame drops in certain camera views, but it really looked far better than it does now.

Yep, painted 2D trees with no depth whatsoever.

Forza5trees_zpsa061495e.gif

*end sarcasm. These so called distant trees do eventually come into the side view window of the car. Looking at that gif I would have to disagree that they're 2D, flat or painted.

I really wish T10 would have removed the crowds when they realized they weren't capable of getting the 3D rendered crowds from the reveal. They don't move. Ever. Just one random guy here and there waving a flag. And the aliasing really hurts the visuals in some areas.

T10 didn't seem to grasp the concept of resolution, and resolution alone isn't important. But high fidelity images AT 1080p/60fps. I'm really sort of impressed that F5 is shipping like this, and the $$$ grab system, and its ok with gamers. Just means, like these basic abuses that a lot of people were wary about manifesting(f5's system of $), its going to get worse. just weird to me, the content and the visuals are compromised for a money system and a bullet point to say a game can do 1080p/60fps on your system too.

Quite frankly, it looks like FM4 Full HD edition. With a lot less content. Rushed as fuck, like other exclusives barring Ryse.
