Digital Foundry vs. Forza Motorsport 5

surprised Digital Foundry doesn't mention T10 is now using a GT-esque depth of field effect, where cars not in focus are blurred..but their edges are perfectly sharp against the background.
Can look strange at times

I think it's safe to say we're not gonna be seeing a lot of 1080p games on the XBO. The machine simply can't handle it with decent IQ and effects. This game only manages to be 1080p60 because there's not much of anything going on visually in it.

Will certainly be interesting to see how GT6 compares to F5 graphically. I don't expect there will be the kind of generational leap some people will expect.

gameplay at least forza wipes the floor with GT6..photomode is something GT has always done amazingly

Fanboy stuff aside, how impressive do you think later games in the series will look? Meaning if we got 1080p/60FPS at launch, what about for Forza 7 or something?

yup, although GT might still look more realistic.

I honestly expect the next GT to destroy Forza for good, though.
The amount of exotic rendering techniques (smoke, dynamic lighting, tessellation) PD is using this gen already, their voodoo (GT6 is already close-ish to being full hd) versus T10 much more traditional way of doing things coupled with the apparently significant disparity in power between the X1 and the PS4 makes me think there will never be a case of Forza coming close and almost matching or surpassing GT in some areas again.

So this is going to be the Digital Foundry's MO the entire generation? 1080p will be a big deal whenever the Xbone is doing it, but otherwise "no one can tell the difference" or "the difference is miniscule."

I still believe T10/Forza will always have the audio advantage, which isn't a small matter if you ask me.

I picked this up with my XB1 yesterday, and even the new console joy can't convince me this game looks amazing, at least on the track. The garage/autovista is pretty awesome.

I don't think they will tbh. Or at least in terms of realism anyway. They might have it in terms of fun factor. We know Polyphony can do good audio based on their trailers alone, and they've stated many times current audio is limited by hardware, and that they are re-doing the entire audio engine for the next game. Will be interesting to see either way.

yes UNLESS t10 gets rid of their poopy engine for good and really go for gold, tbh i doubt they'll ever get rid of it though and somehow i dont even doubt we will see weather in forza 6 too :/

Yikes.
what?

weird how forza 4 had good sounds on even less poweful hardware than ps3, seems like bs to me honestly

Have you played GT6 and FM5? Serious question.
I have. Back to back, too.

Gameplay is subjective.

Visuals, there's no contest. People can compare screenshots all day long, but Forza looks miles better in action, aliasing and all. Its just not even a fair comparison. People posting particularly bad shots of Forza here are going out of their way to make a game look worse than it really does. There's a lot of games that can be made to 'seem' ugly by taking the worst pictures they can find. Its a really dumb and agenda-filled thing to do.

Forza isn't jaw-dropping, but its definitely next-gen and is still going to look good, particularly to anyone coming from the 360/PS3. Compared to a few of the PS4 games and maybe even Ryse, its not super impressive from an image quality standpoint, but it also has the very demanding goal of achieving rock-solid 60fps gameplay.

only talking about graphics here, i doubt GT will ever sound as good as Forza. FM5 in particular sounds incredible.

The reason I even mentioned the sound is because I lump it together with the graphics into "presentation"; all of these racing/simulation games strive to present the most realistic vision of driving, and therefore I value sound as much as any of the graphical tricks PD or T10 might implement. Besides, proper aural feedback does put (many) demands on the hardware, so my personal opinion is that the audio should be included as a technical bullet point just as much as any of the graphical effects/perks that are being discussed in this DF tech topic.

I'm pretty disappointed with the overall quality of games for the Xbone launch - maybe I've been spoiled with PC gaming - but none of them appear 'next-gen'. Next gen to me is about visuals and 1080P@60 (which should just be a base) it's about immersion. Yes there shouldn't be any aliasing, or at least limited. But the crowds should be popping out and ambient shit everywhere.

These consoles were rushed, and subsequently the launch titles seem to be that way too. I'm in Australia, and I get my PS4 this week, and I'm looking forward to seeing KZ and maybe even some other cross platform games - just to compare. But I don't think you've lost anything if you didn't adopt early. The end of next year will be the start of when we should see 'next-gen' games.

Forza 4 isn't really pushing near as much as GT5 on a graphical and technical level though. Better overall lighting engine, dynamic lighting, day night, better shadowing, weather effects and other post processing, pseudo 1080p etc. Different priorities in terms of system resource usage. I guess we'll know when GT7 hits.

It looks a mile away from that first (fake) gameplay trailer at e3 to say the least.

He doesn't need to really. It's pretty obvious that a next-gen game will look better than a last-gen game (Although, I think the photomodes will be pretty close)

i dont need to, you cant get around that hardware limitation bro, no matter how good PD are

Yeah, but I think GT5 (not commenting on 6 until I play) still does some things better than FM5 even on gameplay.

As I said in the other thread, T10 had to make a lot of compromises to maintain 1080p/60fps. The game looks good in gameplay videos but not as good as I've hoped.

they do, forza still uses static lighting, smoke is better in GT5 too and a much more realistic colour pallet, but due to new hardware forza does a lot better than GT5 or 6 ever could..and its just the beginning, i cant wait to see what GT7 looks like

Atrocious IQ. Hopefully this isn't indicative of what it's going to take to get titles to run at 1080p on the Xbone. Trilinear filtering and no AA? Whhyyyyyyy

I do not have a problem with the texture, because in motion FM5 looks great. My main issue is with the horrid smoke effects. They seriously had no resources left to make it a little better?

Its not a bad looking game but its clearly in the Forza 2 spot of "we just ported over the last gen stuff and added a few next gen tweaks".

I bet Forza 6 is vastly more visually impressive. Hopefully they get things like dynamic day / night and some weather effects in it.

This game is very underwhelming in the looks department. Played it all day yesterday and never really got any next-gen feels from it. The haptic feedback is nice though.

"...with a high density of fine details, many of which would otherwise appear muddied if seen through a lower resolution window."

I'm certainly not counting on texture work getting less intricate for any future games. Extra clarity matters.

Coming from the straight 720p of the previous game, where MSAA was in effect to varying degrees based on the race mode chosen, the impact of the resolution boost for this fifth entry can't be understated.

Coming from the same place that has been downplaying 1080p....

The graphical downgrades, lack of tracks, f2p elements and heavy emphasis on grinding makes this the most disappointing dose of reality of all the titles shown at E3. Unfortunately the bone really couldn't cope with this being delayed, unlike the PS4/Driveclub scenario.
