Digital Foundry: Why Can't Destiny 2 Run at 60fps on PS4 Pro?

Isn't there a 1080p 60fps mode thing on the pro?

On a game by game basis, sure. It's not a system level option or anything and the Boost Mode is meant for games without a Pro patch but won't magically make games run at 60 fps.

The difference there is that both versions still target 60fps.

That's why I'm confused. Bungie couldn't make a 4v4 multiplayer hit 60FPS?

It's not like it's doing anything particularly noteworthy with textures or particles effects either. Titanfall 2 has an obscene amount of things going on and very very rarely drops frames.

No, you're probably thinking of boost mode for games that don't have a Pro mode. It just opens up some more GPU power for games without dedicated Pro support, which may improve performance but won't bump a 30fps game to 60fps.

I mean, you could have this argument about almost any 30fps game since what DICE is doing with BF1 is kind of ridiculous.

It also shouldn't be ignored that Bungie is targeting a locked 30fps, with perfect framepacing. Not a single dropped frame. So they need some framerate overhead to achieve that.

If you want 60fps, you must target and develop with 60fps as main priority.
Bungie sure as shit ain't doing this. At least glad we got PCs to brute-force this port.

And another one.

Re-open the flood gates.

Destiny 2 pre-release threads have to be setting a record

Are you trying to save room for more Switch cured my blindness threads or something? People are interested in this question and D2 is one of the biggest games of the year.

this video also basically is telling that the scorpio version of Destiny 2 will most definitely be locked to 30 and will not be 60 fps

It's seems like vicarious has to re-work some of the engine to make sure the engine works above 30hz to 144 on the PC........will be interesting to see how optimized vicarious can get it.

Ah is that so.

yup, not much more to it, essentially. ps4pro could have been alien spaceship tech, they still wouldn't have done 60.

This too, they could've targeted 60 from day 1 like other mp games even on base ps4.
Its just not in their list of priorities so they sure as shit won't be going the extra mile for pro.
Pc is 60 because its an open environment and they dont care if you run it at 10fps or 500fps. Unlike the ps4 No one's gonna come complaining to them about disparity or fps drops, theyll either drop the game or upgrade the hardware.

Are you joking? It would be a massive boon to promoting the PS4P and encouraging more people to go buy it.

Sony doesn't care if you buy a pro or base ps4. Heck their margins are probably better on the slim ps4. The pro is not meant to outsell the slim. And even if every game was 60 on pro and 30 on slim the slim would still sell way more.

Bungie always was a 30fps team.

Also, the only way to know for sure is when the PC version is out. Anyway, I still don't see how 60fps is impossible on 4v4 PvP, but whatever.

Also glad that Bungie themselves are not handling the PC port because it would be locked 30fps most likely if they were. :/

Other games with a similar amount of visual fidelity run at 60FPS with more players in their multiplayer modes. Other than it being a design choice, I don't understand why a 4v4 multiplayer match can't run at 60FPS. I simply can't go back to a 30FPS multiplayer shooter at this point.
I do think he let Bungie off the hook just a bit in that regard. He did explain how their original design for Destiny was 30fps...but I still find it hard to believe they couldn't have made visual sacrifices to get it to 60, especially when you consider they dropped PS3/360.

The cynic in me deep down thinks that MS moneyhatted Bungie to purposely not code the PS4 version to do 60fps so that they could have that exclusivity on the obvious but not yet announced Scorpio version. I hope that's not why, but it wouldn't surprise me.

Cynic and idiot are synonyms now?

No, that's a ridiculous train of thought. Let's not go down those rabbit holes, please. There are more plausible reasons for things like this such as not being able to do it without reworking aspects of their game engine, AI, etc. Those of us that are not experts on game development shouldn't jump to conclusions.

BF1 looks miles better than destiny 2, has destruction, and 64 player matches, and holds 60fps fairly steady on the Pro. Granted it's not native 4K (maybe it's something like 1660p? If forget) but the image is crisp.

- Even with a game built from the ground up to run at higher framerates, BF1 isn't able to hit a steady 60fps on consoles

Yep, people are quick to point to Battlefield 1 and Battlefront (Which look amazing for the framerate that they hold don't get me wrong) but they forget that not only do they not run at 60 locked, but they're not as big or have as much things going on as Destiny 2 claims its PVE will.

Yeah this is the only thing someone, even a big defender of the 30fps, can look at and think "Hold on what's going on?"

I'm no developer, but given the limitations of the map sizes for 4v4 and including the fact that it is just 4v4, the CPU wouldn't have been a bottleneck.

I needed a larger HDD anyway, plus I got $200 for trading in my OG PS4 so I don't necessarily regret upgrading to a Pro. Seeing shit like this surely is a hard pill to swallow though. They really should have named the console PS4K if a resolution bump was going to be the only selling point. Oh well.

So like normal?
Except Destiny is the game with the input lag possible on consoles (86ms on Xbox one and 95ms on PS4), for a 30FPS game. That's very close to what 60FPS titles like COD hit (66-70ms) and probably the same as what BF games hit. So no...not like normal.

Motion interpolation looks like poop anyways, too many artifacting, doesn't get applied properly to everything plus obviously it'll feel like odd because the controls are for 30FPS still at the end of the day.

This post reminds me of all the people who thought MS was going to buy exclusivity for CoD, Madden, Fifa, and Battlefield back in 2013

I was watching their last video.

He said the CPU's in the PC's at the event were a "quantum leap " over the console.

I personally don't see why destiny can't run at 60. Shit, it still looks like it could run on the PS3 if they wanted.

Fixed it for you.

Either way, if Bungie could do 60fps on them, they would have done it.

Like Malik said, fans of the game should take the supposed "L". I won't Malik, I think the game looks great and better than D1. The problem was never how the game looked.

Rise of the Tomb Raider looks like it could run on Xbox 360...wait it already does and looks very close! Doesn't mean the Xbox One version isn't pushing anything.

Go have a look at how Destiny 1 actually looks on last gen Vs current gen. It's not "the same". It's the same sort of difference you see in something like ROTR where the general look remains the same but there are tons of differences when you inspect. But I bet no one would call ROTR a technically average game.

Bungie is very committed to Destiny feeling the same in PvP and PvE, for better and for worse. I don't doubt that Crucible could hit 60 a fair amount of the time but if PvE can't, then it's not going to happen.

I don't want to play the backseat dev here. But i believe 4x4 pvp @60 fps is doable. But bungie is aiming at parity across everything in consoles. So...

Nobody's talking about the animations?

Ever play Halo on the PC? Animations are locked at 30 so it looks weird running at higher framerates.

The frame-rate can go above 60 fps on PC, as high as 144 fps from what I've heard. Animations are not an issue. The CPUs in the consoles are.

Source - (PC Gamer)
”[sic]... if you want to play at 144 [fps] and your rig will handle it, it'll do that just fine," he said, confirming that the PC build at the reveal was only running at 60 fps because of the monitors it was demoed on. Acer provided their latest XB271HK monitors to all PCs at the event. This impressive model has a native resolution of 4K, and supports G-Sync.

- Those hoping for 60fps on Scorpio are likely to be disappointed for the same reason

At least read the OP.
