Still one from last year I think, 10.8 or something.

Just updated the driver through steam before making that post.

Oh, so you just directly upgraded the display driver? I'll try that, thanks.

I'm always surprised when people mention soundtracks in any racing game. I don't even know what the Dirt 2 soundtrack consists of. First thing I do in a racing game is disable music in the menus. Only soundtrack I wanna hear is vroom-vroom.

Haha that's the proper way to race I would say. I mainly just want to hear music in the menus -personally-. During the race, I want to hear the engine and my co-pilot

Monte Carlo images are still in dirt 3.

Going by the images that track layout it the entire thing, then you get it cut in half as you expect.

Looks real nice. Glad Codies is finally coming through with some quality DLC.

[QUOTE=Blimblim]Any interest in the Montecarlo DLC videos?[/QUOTE]
Sure why not?

Plat on the jimkahna speed challenge with my wheel and assists off/manual gears.

This game would really be more fun if my wheel had a clutch, can't brake with downshifting like this and no clutch means engine revving like a retard when braking before a hairpin.

Platinum times are way too generous, half a second under plat when making so many mistakes.

Also holy shit I suck at uploading stuff to youtube and making videos, I always end up with this weird picture frame size image (4:3 monitor res + movie maker = failure?)
Video also cuts out 2 seconds before the end because I only have the trial version of fraps =(

what the hell is trick steer? i turned all assists off when i loaded the game. if "trick steer" is still on then i'm in a load of trouble, as i find the tricks difficult as is and there was a lot of feathering the throttle and steering involved in that clip!

and HELL YES i'm interested in seeing DLC footage

is it official stuff sent to you? I know the track will be dlc but they have prepped stuff already for websites?

I thought it was out already? I just wanted to buy it and do videos, but if it's not out yet then I guess I won't be able to do that ;)

Eh forget it, went to play some more after making the post , finally got to another gymkahna bit and couldn't find it myself.
I guess the latching on stuff can't be turned off in the jimk point events.
An earlier poster told me you can turn it off yesterday, took his word for it, but either I'm blind or it just aint there.
google doesn't come up with any results for trick steer either.

Don't try to go too fast, come to a complete standstill with your handbrake before trying to do the spinning, flat out in second gear for the donuts.

Play with a wheel if you can it's much easier to hit blocks with (harder to spin though).

Playing in behind view can help with the disorientation you may feel in cockpit view.
Turn assists off, I only see them get in the way when trying to drift and spin if they even do anything in gymkhana mode (most are greyed out so I guess you can't enable em anyhow).

Also change controller settings like I mentioned before in the thread.

In the gymkhana events you get those red/green circles to show where you can do donuts and spins right?
Once you get in a drift and start doing the donut, the car will kind of gravitate towards the ideal line (game does some steering for you to make it happen) resulting in perfect circular drifts on the circles.
Took me a while to notice (at first I thought I was doing really well or something).
Once you are in the donut you basically hold down the throttle and turn the wheel and you'll keep doing perfect circles around the center of the circle.

Same feeling as the guided riiiiidge raceeeeer (you know you read that in his voice) drifting, but more subtle.

edit: @ neuromancer well the speed event didn't have the option.
If I can only see it in the points events then that's even more stupid, not everyone looks for these things on the interwebs, and those people will just assume thats how things are.

I think there is an option for it before you go into that exact event, not sure where though.

I noticed on Play-Asia that this game (360 version) is region free. But do anyone know if the online pass is region free as well (e.g., will an online pass from an Asian copy work in Europe)?

I'm having a weird issue where I get no dialogue at all. I can't hear the dudebro in the menus (not that that's bad) but I cannot hear a codriver either. There's nothing. I can hear the engine sounds fine and all but there's no speech. I looked in the options and everything is on max.

Yes. I wish the WRC would return to the Monte. I know the IRC has been there since but it's not the same. WRC, Col de Turini, night, yes please!

PERFECT.

This is how you release PC games people!! (not the GFWL, just the great perf out of the box)

The force feedback is pretty much just shite on the 360 wheels. There is a sizable forcefeedback deadzone on the MS wheel and if you try to go with more rotation with the Fanatec wheel then you will just further widen the forcefeedback gap. Steering input is fine all the way up to 900 degrees but if you have a 30 some degrees of forcefeedback deadzone it feels horribly disconnected. Dirt2, which I loved, did not have this gamekilling problem.

Really? I thought this game has worked great out of the box with the MS wheel, unlike Dirt 2 where I had to tweak it for a while to get it right.

Isn't the MS wheel (and the ffb in xbox games in general) god awful?
So I guess it depends on what you expect from it.

I don't think so, but I'm not exactly a racing grognard. For my purposes I think it does just fine.

This game is gooooooooooood! The car handling is great, almost a perfect mix of sim and arcade. Kinda like in PGR4. Love it! :)

i havent noticed anything of the sort. not saying you are wrong - just that i've spent very little time in the gymkhana events. has this been confirmed, or at least pointed out by others?

assuming the above is true, i guess the gymkhana play space, that isnt timed and has no markers for stunts, has no such lock on?

I can make a video if noone else notices it:p In behind the car view it is very clear the the car is doing perfect circles around the large cones.

@neuromancer: you should try r factor or I racing with a g25 or other high quality wheel, it's amazing.

Gt5 does an incredible job at force feedback too, I've played with ffb wheels for years, mainly at friends (didn't buy my own till 2 years ago) with tons of games since the days of destruction derby 2 on pc, and nothing comes even close to those games.
It's hard to explain, the wheel doesn't just bump and pull around a bit, but you actually feel when the rear wheels start sliding, or when a wheel comes off the tarmac alltogether, or when you have grip and when you don't on ice and dirt in gt5.

The wheel will also pull to neutral position pretty agressively if you floor it with a front wheel drive car, just like it would in a real FW car.
Steering also properly gets stiffer as you go faster.

It feels right, much closer to driving a real car.
You get to let it slide through your hands (sounds erotic, car porn?) as you exit a corner like with a real car, which is very satisfying.

In gt you fight the wheel and the wheel tells you what's going on.

Dirt 3 FFB just feels lame, even on tarmac.

Gek54

Dirt2 and Forza 3 had more than acceptable FFB. If dirt3 didn't have this apparent FFB deadzone problem it would be fine. Turn off the vibration, which is almost completely random, and wheel weight, which is just constant resistance, leaving just the Wheel strength, which is the only TRUE FFB setting. With only wheel strength activated the deadzone should be the most apparent. The wheel just feels loose until you turn so much. It's not as apparent with the MS wheel but if you want to use the standard rally car rotation of 540 degrees on the fanatec wheel then you will have to deal with a large zone of disconnect. 900 degrees is that much worse.

So wait, Monte Carlo DLC might be coming?

If so that's sweet. My rant for wide rally roads is suppressed for now.

i'd be interested. make sure to compare to an area that has no such marker so that we'd be able to see a difference between the circles generated.

Thats absolutely what happens. ANYTIME there is a guide circle in the Gymkhana events, it is making it 100x easier by guiding you and holding you in the groove. Turning off the assists makes it a whole different ballgame.

Its way better without IMO.

Posted this on racedepartment, you don't need the download, its really really simple.

No Sound in Replays, Simple File Mod

What it Does.
This file mod disables music in replays, allowing you to capture raw footage, while retaining music in menus.

What it Is.
A modified musicPlayer.xml, that is placed in the audio folder of the main DiRT 3 directory.

How its Done.
This is quite simple, and can be done manually by anyone. It simply changes one value from .1 seconds to 999.1 seconds.
Code:
<!-- Replay music fade in time (at the end of the race) !-->
    <DataValue name="replay_fade_in" value="[B]99999.1f[/B]" />

Yeah i saw the whole trophy list story. No concrete information though.

Also is the Gymkhana stuff necessary to progress in the game?
Can i just do the rally/raid/trailblazer things to advance?

so there is an actual assist you can switch on and off? does that option only show up in gymkhana events? what about the gymkhana playspace (off to the far left of the career mode's seasons)?

Yes, there is an assist you can turn off. You have to turn it off in the pre-event options. Before the event even starts.

The assist toggle is tied to the guide. So anytime you see a red circle going around an obstacle the assist is on.

There's definitely a gymkhana-specific assist. I'm not sure if he managed to disable it but I saw it in the tutorial sectons two nights ago. It's listed with the other assists but it only shows up in gymkhana events.

As an eternal grumpy cynic, the only reason I can think of for them hiding that option from all other possible assist menus , even on the main menu screen, is to make the younger/casual player crowd feel good about being able to race with 'assists off'. (assists off is the new k/d ratio or prestige)

It's patronising as hell.

Nice driving, manual or automatic trans?
The constant jittering of the wheel (I get it too) onscreen suggests that even if you turn everything off, there is always still some steering aid on in the background.

I got to the second pyramid, and just did my first trailblazer races (in norway) and used the Tacoma.

THIS is the handling I like, it feels just like DiRT 2. All my other races haven't felt as good as these two have. I've been using the Impreza (my goto in Dirt 2), and it didn't feel as good as that Tacoma trailblazer race.

I'm assuming that's just from the kicking back from going 100+ mph on rough terrain. At least that's what my car and all other cars I have ever driven or seen drove do.

Well it happens on tarmac too.
A properly aligned car on a slick paved road should have fairly smooth steering.

There are many situations when I'm driving where I should be spinning or losing control because I tossed the car out balance and yet I'm able to retain (not even regain) control effortlessly.
The onscreen steering inputs just don't always seem to properly follow what I'm doing with my wheel.

Hell it even happens in the video I posted, I should have either hit the wall or spun or struggled to regain control at 24 seconds but it just kind of corrects itself, ignoring momentum/inertia.
Wheels spinning and overdoing countersteer so it veers to the other side ends in a crash.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=88QT5JD46NE
This is what happens in real life.

Not expecting it to be that simmy but assists off is assists off:p

I don't have experience with driving at high (illegal) speeds in real life, but looking at some footage from tarmac races the wheel shaking seems minimal.
I know in forza and gt the wheel jitter shaking indicates steering aid so that's what I'm comparing it to.

You tend to see some heavier shaking in f1 cars and track racing cars, but I guess that's mostly because they have such ridiculously rigid suspension and low profile tyres that every little bump translates to their steering wheel.
