that was a brilliant episode. but did it just retcon, like everything?

It only retconned the fact that the Doctor destroyed Gallifrey. Gallifrey still disappeared from the universe, and the Doctor (up until this point in his timeline) still THINKS he destroyed Gallifrey.

In a way it did, but also retained everything. War Doctor saved Gallifrey, but still carried the guilt and never knew he saved it.

Shit-rewatching it now-Ian is the Chairman of the Governors at the school.

Yeah, and in a really dumb way.

I don't even mind the idea of the Time Lords coming back, but getting rid of all of the Doctor's guilt and revealing that he never even destroyed Gallifrey to begin with is just so...cheap.

I had my doubts about this episode, for a while I had been losing interest in Dr Who. But I have to confess I totally loved this episode it hit pretty much all the buttons that needed hitting (except the nuke gallifrey button :p).

Very well done Episode only minor gripe I had was the Zygon costumes were a tad bit "lo-fi" but I guess that fits in with the Doctor Who ethos.

Dat "I don't want to go"... :'(

Loved it. Surprised they retconned Gallifrey, but I suppose it does open up new possibilities. Seeing Capaldi was pretty damn awesome too.

Pretty decent but they need to fire moffat. his stories are far too convoluted and confusing. They need to go back to being a little more simple or just easier to understand. Thats why I hated series 7. Its gonna take me a few more rewatches to comprehend the whole 50th anniversary special.

That was fucking great. Tom Baker, Capaldi, a reused Eccleston scene. It's all I could have hoped for. Christmas preview is looking good too.

...Wait I didn't want a reused Eccleston scene. Oh Chris. :(

I'm going to go back and read from when the episode started, but just popping in my thoughts.

I watch with my kids as an entertaining Saturday evening show. But I can imagine there might be a spot of gnashing of teeth at such major retconning. Also, although I love
tom baker and he was 'my' doctor
it just felt odd having him there. Felt like
fan services because he regenerated like the other doctors, so how is he still alive and grown old?

Also, why was
peter capaldi
there? Just because Billie piper can see everything? That was odd too.

Not sure about spoiler tagging so erring on the side of caution

Why must you hate the franchise Eccleston. It could have been even better if you had showed up for half a day...

That's okay. Tom Baker didn't show up in the 20th anniversary, but he made up for it with the 50th. I'm sure Eccleston will do the same when he comes back for the 100th anniversary.

Damn that was so good!

No commercials was awesome, couldn't look away at all.

The three of them together was fantastic.

Also, hell yes at that Tom Baker scene.

Yeah, Eccleston will forever be a black mark on an otherwise great episode. Wonderful tribute the show and was quite a bit of fun.

So they played a trailer at the end? It didn't air here in Aust..

yes they did, for the Christmas special

It showed:

Trenzalore, the Silence, the Weeping Angels, and said at the end SILENCE WILL FALL, and then the end of the promo was silent

The only thing that ends up being retcon is that the viewer knows it's changed. But if you look at it from the perspective that we're still learning more and more about the Doctor's life and since it's told completely out of order... it's not really a retcon. :p

What I really enjoyed about it was it didn't go super dark, which it easily could have. It still had major implications but it wasn't as bleak as some of the other more recent episodes.

I started to tear up when all three were about to press the button. I loved the episode, and I have no idea what the future of the show holds, but I can only imagine how powerful that moment would have been if all three had pressed the button together.

He's a pretty swell guy in my books anyway.
So guys uh I'm curious about something
does this change the numbering?

I think Moffat wanted to make it so
he'd use up that extra regeneration, but the official numbering wouldn't have to change.

Oh I didn't give my opinion on the special overall.

FANTASTIC.

I also love the way the three Doctors interacted.

That was a bloody brilliant special. However it saddens me more now that I no longer have the hope that Eccleston or Barrowman would have shown up. Someone really dropped the ball here to the point where they couldn't negotiate a 10 second clip of Hurt regenerating into Eccleston.

yes they should dumb it down because Chezzymann on GAF is literally retarded and incapable of paying attention, great idea

In the case of Barrowman, I thought it was just that they didn't ask him or the timing was bad for him. Eccleston just told them to smeg off.
