I think both this and Mario Kart World were pretty much finished and were interchangeable potential launch games. They just chose to go with Mario Kart, for obvious reasons.

Nah, makes perfect sense for them to spread the games out to add another round of headlines/news articles/sales after launch. Then later this month a Nintendo Direct with more Switch 2 announcements.
They've got a good plan/cadence going here.

Are there non-spoiler impressions out there of the final build? I wanna know how the gameplay holds up over time and if the extra story stuff works with the franchise or gets too overwrought (the FFXV director handling this one gives me pause).

Hajime Tabata is quite a common name but the Luminous FF15 production COO is CEO of JP Games now.
edit 1 : Uh apparently there were dual reporting of different directors by different sources all in the span of a couple of days ago.
It seems Kazuya Takahashi is indeed director but was an art designer, that doesn't make sense.
edit 2: fucking hell there's even multiple Kazuya Takahashi within SE

He was one of the director of Nights into dreams
But again, there's so many devs using that name its a wild guess, Haven't seen a single interview nailing down where he comes from except that he joined Nintendo in 2020. (so why would DKB been in development since 2017?)

Why? It's already sold out everywhere and over 3.5 million sold in the first week, it's not like it would sell any better
If anything this was a test. Nintendo was weeding out who wasn't a true fan that would buy the Switch 2 at launch with just Mario Kart World, now they are going to start dropping the serious heat for the true fans
I would have paid $80 just for the unbelievable 200+ tracks MKW soundtrack. The fact that MKW also comes with a fun racing game is just icing on the cake

and by the end they come back out to the surface and reverse the de-aging of Pauline.
and that will be the explanation why there's so much stuff in New Donk City named after DK characters.

Amazon Canada hasn't got me a Nintendo game on day one ever. Hopefully since it's a Thursday release it shows up Friday though, when Nintendo was doing Friday releases you'd have to wait the whole weekend out.
