Doom: The Dark Ages |OT| Mod City

I FAR prefer "narrative" games like Silent Hill 2 as they are thought provoking stories and with SH2, tend to focus on a psychological narrative. Basically the opposite to The Last of Us 2 with it's big budget and crap Hollywood style story the gaming industry is trying to make today.
Story is secondary to me, gameplay is first like all game should be. But LOU2 story besides some woke themes and Joel's death controversy was great, I think it was a fantastic twist incorporating the revenge story and playing as Abby. Not sure what was thought provoking about SH2 it's a story like we've seen in movies and other games many times over. There's not much out there like the Last of Us story, it's more original. Like I said, we are so opposite it's not even funny.

Nothing like The Last Of Us? A human who has blood that is immune to a disease ravaging a world? I've seen The Omega Man based on the story I Am Legend YEARS ago! Not original at all. And part 2... a revenge story? Hollywood has NEVER made a revenge story before.

Yet the psychological horror in Silent Hill 2 is unique. Hollywood have tried psychological horror but it really works well in games. Yes, Silent Hill drew inspiration from Hollywood films but it's not like anything Hollywood has made. Last of Us is big budget Hollywood story slop. Silent Hill is vague, intriguing and scary with a story that leaves it open to interpretation. But to each their own.

But I do agree- gameplay is king. For ANY game. If a story is strong enough then gameplay can falter a little! Hence my love for Silent Hill!

Going through doom eternal now after dark ages and 2016… yeah eternal is still king.

This game is actually hard. Died more times than 2016 and dark ages put together in the first few levels. Visual powerhouse to this day, soundtrack fucks, and you actually use your entire weapon pool constantly. Dark ages was just super shotty and chain ball. 2016 super shotty and gaus.

This is peak Doom but I can see why some favor 2016 since it's just a straight up game that doesn't overstay its welcome.

Aside from the coolest looking slayer and epic final bosses, dark ages brings nothing better than prior entries. It's fun but not better.

I'm so disappointed in how blurry this game is on ps5 pro...was hoping the patch would help fix this.

How is this not false advertising? Cosmic Realms trailer released 2 weeks before launch with game director stating how "amazing it is on ps5 pro" ...turns out not a single enhancement to settings and its a blurry mess especially those big levels.

I tried cranking the sharpness slider today and it kinda sorta works ...but not in a way that's pleasing to the eye. Despite all the technical advancements the final game is too blurry to appreciate what a shame. I'm sure it looks great on a high end PC im just sick of devs lying and phoning it on on Pro.

Not sure. Am dying a lot more now.

Even those bigger enemies are coming in groups now.

Maybe its cause I am progressing through the game. But it was a massive jump.
Nah. Later levels will get harder yes. Game is overall piss easy compared to eternal, but you'll die more and it'll flood the screen with dudes especially chapter 18 onwards.

Hell Knights do notable more damage now. There jumping attack is now 80-100 damage on UV.

Need to check Pinky Rider, heard they got a massive damage buff. Edit: Pinky Rider seems around the same, maybe people were getting double hit and didn't notice.

Lies of P adds difficulty options to make game easier via patch.

Doom makes the game harder.

What is going on.

Nothing beats the difficulty of Doom Eternal: The Ancient Gods - Part one, that shit was hard.
I loved Doom Eternal so much, I managed to complete Ancient Gods on the easiest difficulty which to me was still damn near impossible, easiest setting was nearly equivalent to Ultra Nightmare in the main game. I still can't even do Returnal first boss but I made Ancient Gods somehow work because I was in love with the game and didn't want to let it beat me.

Well, this isn't quite accurate for Eternal, not mixing weapons that enemies are weakest against, you would run much much faster out of ammo than here in TDA., especially when you're dealing with Maykr drones or Blood Maykrs.

I don't understand the heavy critique to Eternal, is the game really that divisive, did a good part of people hate played the game? Steam score is pretty high, not that it matters too much.
The people who seem to dislike Eternal seem to absolutely hate it. There are all the excuses under the sun like too much resource management and forced to use certain weapons blah blah.. When really, they found it annoying because it was difficult for them so it wasn't fun like 2016 anymore, that somehow makes it a bad game. Still one of the best FPS to this day ever made.. Dark Ages doesn't beat it.. It's funny how Eternal lovers still like Doom 2016 but Eternal haters can't appreciate Eternal being an actual very well fleshed out designed FPS.

I guarantee you, if Returnal was a sequel and the first game was a lot easier and wasn't a rougelike.. People would be hating on it like they do Eternal.

Did Eternal launch barebones like dark ages did?

Eternal having these mini free seasonal passes to unlock stuff, the customization to your profile and skins, etc. plus the extra modes available.

I legit stopped doing nightmare on eternal on my now second playthrough on like level 4 or 5. I was like "I've done this before and it was hard enough the first time" so I set it down one difficulty. Now the game plays like dark ages where I'm not struggling for health non stop.

  • Changing resolutions in fullscreen and using Alt-Tab can cause the desktop resolution to match the new game resolution.
that is not an issue for me lmao
i have to switch desktop to dldsr resolution in many games myself so game automatically switching desktop to dldsr is a feature that i'd want in games

Yeah, that's basically what I was saying. The on the ground combat is more fun and complex, especially more so than those other segments, which doesn't do them any favors. They were passable, but man do they pale in comparison.

Having just played the first flying level, I actually really enjoyed it because it has the sense to have the player land fairly often to engage in ground combat. The dragon controlled really well with keyboard and mouse and made me wish there were more dogfights/chases with the enemy dragons. There was a lot of potential there but most of the air combat ended up being that sort of dodging minigame with the cannons on those ships.

I also think back to how much cooler Halo handled boarding the Scarabs vs boarding the ships in Doom. It is so much more satisfying to physically have to jump your character onto the ship rather than it being a contextual landing cutscene.

One of the greatest moments in the game so far is going melee with a Hellknight. The stomp it does is right out of a Souls game. Took me a while to get used to listening for the bell sound, and it takes two parries to make them falter (I think?). In the larger ecnounters it has mostly been about clearing the waves of demons and save the Hellknight for last. Ive mostly kept my distance from the Hellknight in Doom games before this.

Another was with a Mancubus, in a tightly spaced pump room or something where you get locked in and the room is filled with smoke. Like being inside a thick cloud. With a big ass Mancubus spawning inside the fog with red and yellow lights from the walls bouncing around, and the combat on top of it. A visual overload on my eye balls. Seriously one the most atmospheric moments Ive experienced in a videogame. Its amazing that they can make games look like this now.

Watched a Hugo interview and he said if you parry an attack it gives you get a temp shield. Allows you to use the rocket launcher at point blank rank like a shotgun. I need to try that.

Said this isn't the final Doom game, cagey on a new Quake. Sounds like id has a lot going on.

Hugo started his Dark Ages playthrough this week. Need to watch that this weekend. His Eternal playthroughs were awesome.

I saw Master Levels were confirmed so that's a relief.

Also they are fixing the music mix and bugs. They plan to make the music louder and music that wasn't playing will be fixed.

Thats first upgrade for rocket launcher.

Any damage heals you when you have that effect.

I figured this wouldn't be the final DOOM game at all, but that's nice to hear. Also, come on new Quake, lmao.

Yeah Hugo is awesome. I met him at a previous Quakecon and he genuinely felt like a very humble and down to Earth guy that was taking time to talk to fans. I thought it'd be a hi and bye, but he straight up hung around the entire time I was at this little mixer/party thing.

I figured they would, but good to know as well. The audio stuff was the worst bug(s) I came across. Playing a DOOM game with no music at all feels.... absolutely wrong, lol.

The weapon wheel was driving me nuts, until I figured out in the options you can lower the time it takes to appear. It is set to 180 ms at default, which is why its taking so long to pop up. I thought the RB on my controller was busted.

Default setting 180 ms

Lowest setting 70 ms

Setting the wheel at 70 ms takes away the ability to quick swap (when testing now), but the wheel appears near instantly. Quick swapping works again if raised to 120 ms if you want that, but then the wheel appears almost immediately after a quick swap and can clutter the view if you only wanted to swap weapons.

I made a little gameplay video of 150% speed, Nightmare difficulty, and no weapon wheel using a Razer Wolverine controller. Once you play 150% is sooo weird going back to normal speed.

I'm up to the Abyssal Forest. Beautiful stuff man.

I want to go back to 2016 after this. And I bet it's gonna be a real trip having to adjust to having no shield. Can't wait! :D

I started playing 2016 a couple days ago. It feels fine and I adjusted quickly.

It does suck having less offensive tools at your disposal. The Doom Slayer feels a little nerfed, especially when enemies get in your face since there's no Blood Punch or parries.

Please make me feel better by confirming I can't be the only person who got completely stuck on the dragon sections because the tutorial tells you to use LT to dodge when it's actually B.

Sigh. Why am i playing games day 1 still...

Just finished the Harbor of Souls level and while that was a better map overall I can only muster about one level per session. No idea why they thought one hour levels were the way to go. Looked at the map that comes after and I just noped out of there.

Really souring on this tbh. But then again it's the only DOOM game of the past 30 years I actively dislike so that's not a bad run for a franchise this old.
