Doom: The Dark Ages is a flop

It starts of very slow and unappealing. I was feeling disappointed at first, the game just didn't feel like a fun experience. But... I pushed on and didn't want to give up on it as I absolutely adored 2016 and Eternal and my gawd when it clicked for me, it CLICKED. Now I'm running into hordes and bigs and just curb stomping and shield slicing these mf'ers like burritos. Crazy fun. Game is great! Soundtrack is pretty weak tho. Miss Gordon badly.

I doubt it wil be considered a flop in the long run, but it definitely isn't as good as Eternal or 2016.

That still means it's better than 99% of the dog shit that gets released these days, but it could have been better.
U confuse quality of the game with its sales numbers, we consider game a flop if it sells well below expectactions aka doesnt make back money invested in its budget(it actually has to make 2x its budget amount to be considered success which makes sense, if u are investor u dont wanna spend 300m usd over 5 years only to get same 300m usd in profit back, u want at least 2x that amount so 600m usd, and again we talking profit here, not revenue).

That price though. I'm glad people are voting with their wallets.
I DID MY PART THOUGH AND BOUGHT THE 200EU COLLECTORS EDITION!!!!!

haven't played yet but been playin through doom 3. what an amazing game that is

Doom 3 was the one notorious for the "monster closets" unfortunately. Every encounter in that game was the lights suddenly go out and a bunch of demons appear behind you when a wall opens that was keeping them inside until right when you arrive

The atmosphere of Doom 3 was unmatched though

Yes, this is true. But still, that game was a milestone in videogaming even with its issues.

This is what I'm talking about. Was it chapter 6 for you also?

Flop or not, I just finished the game and it was pretty great. The gameplay was excellent. I have some issues with some things, but it was good overall.

Glad I got to play it via game pass.

Around that yes. Once I started to get the hang of it and understood how the game wants you to play, it got so freakishly fun. I'm attacking hordes and biggies like a butcher and I friggin love it. Running into big crowds and causing all kinds of havoc. I understand some people are thrown off by the start of the game but my advice is to push through it and suddenly the game clicks and it's so much fun.

Playing through the game a bit this morning. Solid title so far but yeah I can see some of the gripes that people have with the game. Also something about the game just kinda feels... antiquated? not quite sure how to articulate it but yeah. Anyway the game is quality and the story is well there. Also I think Expedition 33 turned me into a parry god.

But that's not the case with other big hit video games. So what's up with that?

Most recent big hits have been also a hit on social media: Hell Divers 2, Black Ops 6, Marvel Rivals or REPO comes to mind.

We are also in the transition phase probably, people are just watching people play video games rather than just play them. And thats even assuming they are even caring about games at all. If you see many kids outside, most of them are fixated on social media/reels, not mobile gaming (or any portable gaming like the Switch).

If it goes on to sell millions of copies in a couple of years...is it still a flop?
It all depends on the cost of development and the amount the game/IP made as a whole.

It's really hard to gauge too considering the details that exist point to majority of the players being on Game Pass. So, how that equates to their success is a question mark. Really depends on overall development cost, and the total of Game Pass subsciptions + game sales across all platforms.

I bought it day one! Are not these the games we keep asking for on NeoGaf?
Non live service,
Single player,
non woke,
Focus on the core male gamer
From reviews very solid game

I think we should all take a long look in the mirror and see if we have been lying to ourselves.

Well... yeah, but people still want the game to be good, too.

It is good, if it wouldn't be fun there would be no runs on Ultra Nightmare and speedruns. Usually shitty games don't attract speedrunners and godlike players.

Oh, they 100% do.

Either way, I wasn't saying that this game is necessarily shitty - I have no idea - I'm just saying that even though a game checks a lot of boxes like being single-player and being targeted towards male, core gamers; none of that matters if the quality isn't there.

The game is fine, really. This is my observation as a long time gamer and responsible adult person.
