Lesh and Lina's stuns both require aiming and foresight. You need to understand what type of player your opponents are, if they're the type to run in lines or the type who will try to fake you out. And you can use that to your advantage. For those in the first category, all you need to do is stun where they'll walk into. For the second category, you can start a stun, stop it, and move forward. The time they spent trying to dodge it means they won't be running away as fast, and for ganks this is invaluable. You can fake a stun to the right to make them go left, or fake a stun to the left to make them go right.
If you're in the woods, you can hide in trees and stun while you're hidden in fog. Again, this will come down to how well you understand your opponent and how well they understand you, whether they'll walk into it or wait. It's no different from Pudge's hook, AoE globals, etc. It's all a matter of mind games.
