Asunder and The Masked Empire both take place between the second and third games.

If you want a story about the Mage/Templar situation, go for Asunder. If you instead fancy the far superior* world of Orlesian politics and Elf-relations, read The Masked Empire.

*I may be slightly biased.

lol, thanks for the info. I am gonna be playing as a mage elf so it looks like I'll have to read both. :O

But if I only have time for one, I think your opinion just shifted me towards Masked Empire.

Did you read The Last Flight?

I thought the fight with
Corypheus
could get a little frustrating with the pathfinding at times.

I guess that's true. I just let everyone in my party get flamed to death and then Spirit-Healered them back up later XD Which I supposed proves your point.

I loved the feel of the battle, though, with its various phases and the way it just became more and more ridiculous as time went on.

Last Flight kind of fits in by giving you some background on what's happening with the Grey Wardens, which seems to fit into DA:I but perhaps less directly than Masked Empire or Asunder. Most of it is a narrative of the Fourth Blight, however. A lot of Warden lore and (IMO) some reasonably interesting characters.

Not had the time for The Last Flight unfortunately, but from the synopsis it doesn't seem like it's going to be linked to the new game as closely as the other two.

Thanks for the info. Just looked at Amazon and they say Asunder is 415 pages and Masked Empire is 381. Not sure I can finish both before Tuesday.

Also, there was another novel called The Last Flight. How does that fit in?

Really, if you think you can do one, do Masked Empire. No offense to David Gaider, but I really feel like Masked Empire reads so much better. And like I said, I think it's more of a preparation for DA:I. Non-detail Asunder spoiler:
Nothing really changes by the end of Asunder, mages and templars are still at each others' throats, while Masked Empire is pretty significant
. Masked Empire is also a bit more of a page turner; it's paced well to keep you going.

Last Flight is really a story about the Fourth Blight, so it's likely less relevant. I haven't read it yet because of this.

In attempting to recreate my world state I realized I remember absolutely nothing about the choices I made, even in the "good" playthrough. Ah well.

Look at it. Just sitting there.

Mocking me.

Hahahaha, I know right?

Thanks. Looks like I can skip Last Flight for now.

Yeah, if there isn't much development in Asunder, I guess I'll skip it. Not too interested in Cole yet anyways, although that might change when I actually play the game.

Masked Empire seems like it will be a fun read, especially since I've been playing The Last Court on The Keep.

Time to get cozy with my Kindle. :D

So I finished DA:O and Awakening and started DA2. While the story and characters might not be as good as the original, the actual gameplay is miles better, especially combat as a mage. I don't remember enjoying it as much as I am now, compared to when the game came out on PS3 (playing on PC now). I should have this beat by Tuesday!

Edit: And finally some good looking gear compared to the trash from Origins.

I don't know, the combat in DAII seemed to be too much on the hack-and-slash side of things. I much preferred combat in the original game.

Well its different, yes, but I much prefer the actual animations of clicking and casting spells, the better effects, it feels much faster paced which I like too. Maybe its different with other classes but playing as a mage in Origins felt like a chore to me.

Local store already has this. So tempted to go get it, but I'd give up that Best Buy GCU discount. Also, I'm not sure I have the time to take on this game at the moment. Might hold off. Don't know what to do. :/

I just bought Dragon Age Origins Ultimate Edition yesterday so I'll be bnetter prepared for the world in DA:I. I'm twelve hours in.

Well preordered the deluxe for PS4 from amazon with release date delivery. Crossing my fingers that the PS4 version is a nice port as I could have opted for PC but i'd rather have a physical item.

do you want it now or would you rather use the cash you save(from GCU) for something fun later?

so how does the keep thing work? do i sign into my origin account on ps4 and it just uploads the stuff automatically?

Yes, but you have to make sure you exported your Keep data to DAI. There will be an screen icon with a red arrow above it saying DAI and Need to export next to it if you havent. After that you just need to login into your Origin account in the actual game and it'll load up your world state.

If it's like what I'm thinking, the game will probably ask you to log into your Origin account when you fire it up, and it'll automatically transfer the information when it links your accounts. I know one of Bioware's previous games worked like that.

Uuuuuhhhhhhhhhhh...

Theres a lot of development in Asunder. The difference is that the gist of it is already pretty much a given if you played DA2, Mages and Templars split and go to war, the book just goes into much more detail about how that happens from perspectives within the organizations, plus its an orogin story for one of the companions in DAI (not one I particularly care about but still). Masked Empire gets into a second big conflict that hadn't been given much of any detail prior, which makes it important in a different way though. The civil war in Orlais was just barely hinted at in DA2 and its in full detail in Empire. Both are very important, but Asunder is probably the most relevant for DAI simply given its conflict affects the entire world and is the context for the big disaster that kicks off the game, while the conflict in Empire is mostly contained to Orlais and will be more of large secondary issue.

If I could only read one before DAI, it would be Asunder.

Oh and Last Flight isn't just about the fourth blight for who was saying that. It swaps between that and the modern era, and the stuff happening in the modern timeline is certainly important to the Wardens. The ending is going to be a HUGE deal for future DA games too. Huge. That said, yeah its lower priority for DAI prep. Could just as well read it during or after DAI I think. Edit: though the ending may or may not be spoiled in Inquisition, which would suck. Its a pretty damn big deal, but since its impact won't really be felt until later down the timeline, i'm not sure if DAI will mention it or not.

How much do you think most reviewers played before getting to that 'sweet spot' where they felt they'd seen and done enough to justifiably review it?

A lot of the major reviewers reported beating the game, claiming some 80-90 hours played with still a vast amount of things to do.

The streamer I was just watching only just now completed the Hinterlands. 12 hours.

I don't know if they beat the Dragon or not, but they most likely did.

Can't really judge framerate by this, but otherwise it looks similar on all three. In the sequence when the camera panned up to the breach, though, there was pretty bad stuttering on the Xbox One version, and a little on the PS4 version.

I'd love to hear what others have to point out. Of course, we'll have to wait for DF for a real comparison, right?

Honestly, I don't recall seeing any slowdown when I played that bit, so it might be on their end. Or I could just be forgetting things.

Agreed that they seem largely identical otherwise.
