500 silver? I thought 100 silver = 1 gold. Why wouldn't she say 5 gold?
If thats the conversation im thinking of, she doesnt say it but thats how its worded in your choices. As for why silver and not gold.. probably because silver is what most common people deal in as far as the game world goes.

So I am just about to finish my first playthrough as a mage, and was wondering what peoples opinions were on the Rogue class for my second playthrough, more specifically the Ranger specialization with dual wield?

One word: Duelist.

You either need a party member to train you (improve relations by talking to them a lot between quests) or to buy/find a training manual.

Shapeshifter: Learned From: Morrigan (Companion), Varathorn (Dalish Camp)
Spirit Healer: Learned From: Wynne (Companion), Wonders of Thedas (Denerim, after Landsmeet starts)

Rogue

Assassin: Learned From: Zevran (Companion), Alarith’s Store (Denerim, after Landsmeet starts)
Bard: Learned From: Leliana (Companion), Alimar (Orzammar)
Duelist: Learned From: Isabela (The Pearl in Denerim)
Ranger: Learned From: Bodahn’s Wares (Party Camp)

Warrior

Berserker: Learned From: Oghren (Companion), Gorim (Denerim Market)
Champion: Learned From: Arl Eamon (at the end of the “Urn of Sacred Ashes” quest line)
Reaver: Learned From: Kolgrim (Wyrmling Lair)
Templar: Learned From: Alistair (Companion), Bodahn’s Wares (Party Camp)

The specialisation system is pretty dumb. Without using a guide there's a chance you'll never really find what you are looking for, at the least unknowing of when to expect it.

The ones taught by party members aren't hard to figure out at least.

Is there a reason for duelist rather than Ranger?
Yeah duelist is more cooler and gives you better skills situated with staying alive. And thats rare for rogue. Other than that ranger is mostly archers, duelist is two handed awesome. That's all i got as I am playing duelist rogue on my 2nd. :D Maybe a ranger can tell you different but from seeing it's skill set compared to duelist I doubt it.

The Blood Mage one makes no sense. I beat that demon and it's not unlocked.
Thats the only one I knew

Supposedly you're able to
Bargain with the demon at the end to take the kids soul later, however when I played I was never given the choice and even though I tried to initiate the bargain, she still ended up attacking me

When you talk to the demon you tell her that you don't care about the boy, just the father. Then you start making a deal where the demon leaves for a time and repossesses the boy at a later date. Then you ask what's in it for me and you get three options. You can either learn how to be a blood mage, fuck the demon (not an actual sex scene), and something else I forget. I don't think there's any persuasion/intimidation involved, because when my mage got it, her cunning was extremely low and she couldn't persuade anybody into doing anything.

A little lacking in end cutscene department, and the cleanup at the end of it through text bubbles seems so bland, but I guess with so many branching decisions it had to be like Fallout 3's final "cutscene", as that's probably the easiest way to do things.

This is a Bioware game, if you go into a Bioware game expecting a huge 20 minute ending cutscene as payoff for your 40-100 hours, you're going to /wrists every time you play one and finish it. KOTOR had no ending to speak of, Jade Empire really didn't, neither did Mass Effect actually. It's Bioware SOP to not have real endings in their massive, epic RPGs. If there's one thing that JRPGs do correctly, it's that they always pay off the game you just spent a hundred hours with and the characters you've spent more time with than your friends the past few weeks with a worthwhile ending. And I'm not even talking about the ending needing to be excessively long, just look at the ending for FFX, it wasn't very long but the emotional payoff and closure was huge (a pity that Squenix decided they needed more money and ruined FFX's ending by making FFX-2). Bioware doesn't put real endings in their games, period, and never have. Play DAO with this understanding and you'll be happier for it when it's over.

In Dragon Age, Ranger spec has nothing to do with archery. It's just pets. I'd be interested to hear what they're like too.

I chose Ranger as my spec. Once you unlock the Master Ranger skill your pets get upgraded (regular bear turning into grizzly bear and so on). Each of them gets their own 2 skills.

Great tanks and the damage their deal is quite good too. They have saved my ass quite a few times.

Edit: and yea, it sucks how you might never be able to learn a spec you wanted. I wanted Alistar to learn champion as his second spec, but I never got the champion manual.

Ranger just adds a pet. If you want a spec that enhances dual wield choose duelist, or make a dual-wield warrior and pick any of the specs.

I played dual-wield rogue/duelist/assassin my first time through.

i was thinking of going Ranger or Bard with my rogue. Maybe both :lol Is it possible to unlock Ranger early in the game?

Ranger pets are like the 5th party member, they have some of the War Dog's abilities and can tank stuff pretty well.

You can buy the manual at the shop in the party camp.

Ah cool thanks. About the pets.. are they controllable like other party members?

edit: thanks again! i really like the bards song for the regen stuff.. but im thinking with how difficult things are im going to want another meat shield :lol

Im really happy that american DLC codes work for europe as well (no one here seems to have lions paw or guild masters belt)

Why does each DLC have its own huge box tho? Looks really odd.

I've done the elves, dwarves and Redcliffe quests and left the Mage tower for the last. Somehow the game became much less fun after I got Wynne into my party....or it could also be all those mage enemies, hate that stuff.

Theres no turning back now but I'm having regrets over the choises I made in regards party members. Hows the guy from the cage (Sten?) in the first town as a character?

I wanted to get him in my party, but the town was wiped off the map when I returned from the Elven forest.

If you ask Circle Tower for help, any character you use will not accept a trade. Thus, you are screwed getting blood Mage unlock. That's why had to replay the game because all my save files were way pass that choice.

I much prefer Shale as my warrior because of his awesome conversations and comments but Sten is pretty neat too. Ridiculously blunt and to-the-point.

What would be a good secondary specialization for a ranger?

i guess it depends on what you want your rogue to do. If you are looking into a more support role, Bard is probably the way to go. If you like doing backtabs, Assassin seems like it would give you higher damage. Then there is Duelist if you want a more fighterish rogue.. also seems to have more survivability with bonuses to defense.

I tried to stick with him but I found him boring. Shale is better.

Thanks. I'm rarely play a game more than once but I really want to do it with this game. Have just everything planned out and try to get my dream team team together.

For now I'll enjoy the raw experience of the first playthrough though. Doing things as they come. My characters might not be all they can be, but this far I've defeated everything that has been thrown at me without having to change the difficulty to easy.

Somehow I have a feeling that I have the worst behinde me. I did the elves quest first and that stuff was insanely hard, to the point I felt like pulling my hair out. Ice cone is the best skill in the game, haha.

Edit: My next char will def be an evil asshole.

ffffffffffuuuuuuuuuuuck

Just lost 500 silver to this lady by giving it to her for safe travel to Denerim. I thought I was making her pay me 500 in order to escort her there :(

But in the end you're such a nice person :D

Seriously, though, (might be a spoiler so I'll be cautious)
Do you get any positive benefits from helping/hurting people other than party influence? I've been a total dick to some people and an angel to others, but other than some party members liking or hating me for it I haven't noticed much.

Is there an option to send Wynne in and have her have sex with the demon? Im sure the game would shoot out of the console at that point

I actually liked the ending 'slides.' They were specific enough that I felt that the game was really responding to the choices I had made.

Thank you. Some parts of this game is epic, and when my companions speak to each other , or regarding my different relationship while I'm with them is rather hilarious!

I really wished they did more with archery. In most RPGs, archers are consider mage killers or disrupters.

In guildwars there was a stance that allowed you to avoid melee attacks, another skill to blind the enemy warrior charging at you (like dirty fighting I presume).

But most important are skills to disrupt casters and totally screw them when casting a spell.

Archers in this game are not scary and their DPS is pretty low compared to a melee weapon.

The devs have already said/confirmed that Archery is pretty broken. I forgot where the stuff was from (probably bioware's forums) but Archery was intended to be basically melee damage but with more armor penetration. Somewhere in the few months before release this got botched but they plan on correcting it.

Side Note: someone stop me from playing this game. I can only take like 5 minute breaks, max. I'm also in love with Leliana's voice but I gotta give it to Claudia Black <3 <3 <3. WHERES MY FARSCAPE BOXSET!

So I strolled up to mister dragon and said "hey, it's time". And then the mother fucker got slewn.

Totally awesome. I'm not even done with my first blight quest yet. The inventory sucks ass. Had to throw away like 10 items to make room for DRAGON LOOT. Which was worse than some chest in some crazy townsperson's house. Whatever.

Andraste popped my dragon cherry. I initially went with the "Well if you crazy guys are going to make my life easier, sure I'll help" option. Then I saw the dragon and was like, naaahh fuck that, so I reloaded and killed everyone and banged that fucking gong. And holy fuck that was tense, at 20% I had two characters down and was ranged tanking mother fucking fireballs. Poor Alister got devoured by the thing literally, I couldn't get a heal off as he got eaten from full health to nothing while it was on cooldown.

Oh and I laughed at the mirror team having my main as a dagger rouge and Lilliana as an archer. WRONG. Also Morrigan leveled up by killing herself.

I love this game. If MW2 weren't crazy on sale tuesday I wouldn't even bother picking it up.

Damn I can only imagine....

I have Wynne/Alistar/Leliana

And Wynne would go on and be like a grandmother to the whole group, nagging and such.

Alistar and Leliana would go on either gossiping about me or talk about simple things.

They feel so real... damn there must have been tons of dialog recorded.
