Dragon Quest 7: Fragments of the Forgotten Past |OT| Roman numerals are hard

Reposting this for the new morning.

I dunno is there a mistake here where they don't tell you where to go next in this one case or is this game going to be so vague in general that this is going to happen again and I should dig up an old DQ7 guide?

You got the cave and the castle. Did you get the piece from the large building in ballymalloy

Menu- info- next tablet piece will get you back on track.

Open the menu and use the option that tells you where the next tablet is.

There's nothing vague about the game so far. I've found every tablet piece without ever using the hints.

Well they should tell me about the menu... I knew that this 3DS version of the game had some feature to tell you where to go next but I assumed that was the Fairy's "Ask for Guidance" item.

I actually opened the menu last night looking for something, but I was looking through the "Misc" menu for something I could use, and didn't try the "Info" menu for some reason.

The game is being more than vague it's being completely misleading.

The Fairy dude is literally saying "Word from the top is that it's time for you to arrange all the tablet fragments you've collected on the appropriate pedestal." That sounds to me like I have everything I need and the next step is to simply lay them down. You'd think that if you didn't have something you needed to move forward he'd say something about collecting more fragments.

So, something silly happened to me after finishing up Alltrades Abbey. There was another fragment left over in Pilgrim's Perdition and I was thinking: 'That's weird why would they make me go all the way back there?' As I backtracked through the Abbey basement and the Western Caves I began to think that maybe this was a way of the game getting me to level up my new vocations. Turns out the entrance to town opens up right outside the Abbey, all that backtracking for nothing, well not for nothing, I got some job levels out of it, still, I feel a little foolish.

Ruff is especially tuckered out after the round trip.
You think you feel foolish? I did that and went back for the piece through the lengthy dungeon areas before even choosing jobs! :D I blame being conditioned to immediately go back and grab items on other JRPGs that have locked off areas after you beat them.

Absolutely loving the game, just finishing the dunes. Alltrades Abbey was pretty easy for me,
I had Maribel with the stone and set to 'focus on healing', which meant she healed anyone who lost more than 30-odd hp, and otherwise attacked. Only problem was the boss hit me with his two balls of light for 140+ damage, forcing a use of a Yggdrasil leaf. I had also played the pairs game at the casino, which seems the easiest way to both make money and gain decent kit like evade robes, a warhammer and full plate at that point. Winning equipment is even better than winning money as you don't lose half of them if you die..

For tough boss fights, I often find the AI is really good for healing because it will decide who to heal just as that character acts, not at the start of the turn. Saved my hide a couple of times in the DS games by healing just after a strong boss attack.

I hope I get a new party member soon, but it's fun getting new abilities from the jobs at last.

The desert dungeon has a tune that has this part where the MIDI trumpets play three notes solo and it sounds hilariously terrible. Reminds me of my shitty Casio keyboard I had as a child. I checked the orchestral version and it doesn't sound much better.

Shiren the Wanderer fell into my hands today and man, that game has such a fantastic theme, also by Sugiyama.

He's so all over the place. One moment he does these weirdly dissonant tracks, and then follows with very sweet and dreamy compositions.

So I it sounds like I maybe missed a tablet in Ballymolloy in the past..

"I sense the presence of a tablet in the tower to the east of Ballymolloy... Search the tower, and you will find it eventually..."

I actually think the game doesn't know how to handle this situation. When I do party talk my teammates helpfully say "Come on, let's head over to the shrine and put together another tablet!"

Basic game design tip: The player needs an item to advance, block them until they get that item.

Glad to hear I'm not the only one, I did this as well, but thankfully I did get classes first so I did get to level them up at least.

Second time getting killed by Gracos, I'm lvl 23 (ruff is lvl 21) am I under leveled?

Don't think about it that way. Look at your class abilities or equipment as a first pass when you hit a wall. In this case, I would recommend learning shepard's wooly blanket ability; it'll help a ton.

Is there a trick or a requirement before you can start getting monster hearts? I've killed hundreds of slimes but no hearts yet. Do I need to go to Dharma first?

Do the slime tablet you get from the first townsperson in Haven and they'll drop like candy.

Are all of the advanced classes' final abilities overpowered/game-breaking? Just maxed out Ruff on Monster Masher and got Scorch, which is a 0-mp fire attack that does ~140 damage to all monsters on the field. Where I am right now (
just cleared Providence in the past
) it feels like an instant-win button against random mobs. I'm halfway tempted to leave Ruff on this class. It certainly makes grinding for my other party members easy!

Seconding that Woolly Blanket recommendation, btw. Ice breath attacks seem particularly painful, not just from that boss.

Do I need to complete the tablet all the way first? I'm in there right now grinding and I haven't seen a single heart drop. Makes me think I need to do something to trigger the drops. I've mastered 3 jobs already but no drops.

(For clarification I came here immediately after finishing Alltrades abbey)

edit: I did some googling. Apparently I needed to pick up the monster munchies. After 999+ slime kills with no drops, I got one on my 3rd fight after getting the munchies. Don't make the same mistake I did.. Grab that right away! Lots of wasted gold for me.

I must have been so lucky fighting them. They only used regular attacks against me.

The loss I had was because they kept spamming dazzle and desperate hits, so I couldn't recover enough to make up for the damage they were inflicting. Not to mention, I couldn't fight back since I'd miss.

The second time was more manageable. Got a critically timed desperate hit miss which gave me a free turn to cause more damage and kill off the bosses.

I really like what they've done with the island of Ballymolloy. Genuine Irish slang and idioms are always appreciated in games.

A few questions if anyone can help:
1) When/how do I start being able to recruit monsters?
2) How do I recruit more monsters to Haven?
3) How do I get street pass set up?

I'm at the village near Faraday Castle.

1) Sometimes after battle a monster wants to join and you get the option of telling them about Monster Meadows. You need to have the Monster Munchies. Using the Monster Munchies or an ability from the monster tamer vocation increases the odds.

2)Do you mean the people who populate the town? If you talk to each one they'll give you a clue of where to find the next. Some can only be found after certain events.

3)Go to the Haven and then downstairs and through the portal, go into the house and talk to the old man.

Pay more attention to your fragment radar on the bottom screen. In dungeons it usually (always?) goes the extra mile of showing ya where it is on the map if you're on the same level as it. In towns doesn't do that but the difference between its faintly & strongly flashing is super noticeable. Theres at least one real stupid one long into the game that'll not be immediately helped by those things so ya, the Misc. help options'll still come in handy!

Okay, I change my mind about using tactics. After accumulating a ton of abilities and spells, my party goes to town on pretty much every non-boss encounter recently. Makes progressing through areas a whole lot quicker.

I think defining games in to stuff of what they "should," and "shouldn't" do is silly.

I think DQVII frames everything well enough that needing to find the fragments/shards on your own is pretty essential to the experience. I think the fragment radar and the hint system is a perfect compromise. Otherwise they would need to be distributed through un-missable cutscenes and if they did that why even structure the game the way that it's structured.

This is my 3rd play through of this game and I have never missed a necessary fragment. It's a game that definitely rewards exploration.

I never use the tactics system? Should I start to?

Just got
Mervyn
from the Tower (after Gracos). I saw above, if I understood correctly, that you could get
Aira
shortly thereafter by doing a certain tablet first. Which tablet was that? I want to get her before she's too far behind on class leveling.

Yup! Lots less laggy menu button pressing to!

Just went through the tablet dungeons I could get, which got my first three classes mastered, so waiting until job classes was a good call. I should be able to tie the tablet dungeon pacing to storyline pacing at this point.

Yeah, the AI tends to know more about the enemies than most players do, and it's also good for characters like Ruff who has 0 MP-cost utility and AoE before getting classes.

Does anybody know what Slime Heart does? I'm afraid to use it up at the wrong time...

As someone who likes to have control of all their character I'd say... yes. It makes random battles way faster, because you'll likely do whatever the AI will do anyway. I only change for boss battles

Maturity, bitches.
The next section can be pretty hard, so if you've got the patience, I'd do the memory game a couple of times. It can net you some pretty damn strong equipment.

Wish I had prepared myself for it. Finally
have all my spells and abilities back.
Having a hero with just a copper sword sure didn't help lol

No way! Why? I never grinded, but I pretty much have 90% of the best gear the whole time. What were you spending money on?

Hahah yeah, I can imagine. I tend to get stuck at the casinos whenever I come across one in a video game and usually it just ends up feeling like a waste of time.

Not so with DQ VII. I had no idea what to expect, and I'm damn glad I stuck around lol.

I just can't get the 4 statues looking into the same direction puzzle right. I've been 20 minutes trying multiple solutions and the door to the next room won't open. Any tips? I'm in the
present version of the bridge island.

I thought it was looking at the same direction as in all of them looking to the right and it was looking at the center so my definition of direction clashed with theirs.

I just got it so one was looking in and three were looking directly out and then hit the button that moved only those three.

Oh boy, things are getting serious in this game at 65 hours.
I have Maribel in the party again and the present world is engulfed in darkness. I had the feeling something like this had to happen since the start of the game, "glad" that it happened. :)

I dunno if I'm just getting used to DQ games in general, but this one feels really easy. Normal attacks from enemies barely do anything to my party, and I don't even grind. I had trouble with that bandit fight with the four guys, but otherwise it's mostly been a breeze. Hoping things get tougher.

Alright done with the first tablet. Man, I really didn't remember anything past the first slime fight, it was like playing a new game lol.

I'm kinda not sure what to do with the stats boosting items, right now (End game party composition spoilerssss)
I'm using most of them on the Hero and some on Maribel. I know Maribel leaves and doesn't come back until the end game, so it's kinda of a waste, on other hand it's like 50 hours until I get Airi and Menvil.

Every post-2 DQ is easy. The series is marketed as being for RPG beginners in Japan, and has for years. It's made for everyone to enjoy.

That's why I've never understood the stigma the series has in the west, unless it came from people who only played 1 or 2 on NES.

It's probably from all the people that got DW1 for free with Nintendo Power and that's all they ever played.

I wouldn't say this is fully 'easy'. The difficulty spikes a bit when you get to the Abbey, mostly due to reduction of powers. It can be a bit of a bitch.

…er nothing lol. Been basically upgrading from treasure chest rewards. Hasn't really been a problem until now, but having
just had my party reduced to three
didn't help matters. Well I know what I'm doing when I find a weapon shop again ha ha.

Just unlocked the job system, 24 hours in.

I love it when games play with your expectations and more than willing to forgive playing through what others would consider "not-fun" segments if they serve the story or experience.

I'm absolutely in love with this game, I honestly think of another turn based JRPG that I've enjoyed this much.

The premise and structure is incredibly alluring, I'm always curious what awaits me on the next island and, after I solved whatever problems the inhabitants had, what became of them.

Shard collecting feels really good, like say, how you are rewarded with stars in 3D Mario games, they are tangible rewards.

The rest is done rock solid.
My one gripe has been the difficulty so far, it's just a tad too easy.

But man, what a game.

I generally agree, though VII did have some hard spots, didn't it? I do recall some genuinely challenging bosses.
Kraken, Dharma temple section, town frozen time?

Granted, I did play it when I was a jrpg-noob basically.

Same, I recall it having some difficult spots as well. The nice thing about the remake is that it has those traveler's tablets. I picked one up from someone at some point? Maybe swinging by a McDonald's or GameStop.

Anyway, It was a pretty difficult dungeon, but manageable, but the boss destroyed me. Completely immune to physical attacks and only Maribel and my MC could deal damage to him because they both had "Swoosh."

First death so far.

Reached Faraday.

... Is it me, or
does this feel like a Dr. Who episode? Think it's the mix of having Dr Who knowledge I didn't have before, the British flavoring of the dialogue, and the fact it's a robot menace of unknown origin.

I clearly recalled a bit about cooking with simple ingredients that's still there! And I remember the present day situation of one part even though this otherwise has been kind of vague in memory.
