Dragon Quest 7: Fragments of the Forgotten Past |OT| Roman numerals are hard

I thought it was looking at the same direction as in all of them looking to the right and it was looking at the center so my definition of direction clashed with theirs.

I just got it so one was looking in and three were looking directly out and then hit the button that moved only those three.

Thanks. Had the same thought as you. In what world is same direction =/= facing each other lmao

And then the LORD David Bowie saith to his Son, Jonny Depp: 'Go, and spread my image amongst the cosmos. For every living thing is in anguish and only the LIGHT shall give them reprieve.'
Can you make it to new parts of the game without picking up certain tablet pieces, or are they mandatory to progress further? I feel like I may have missed some.

Man the volcano made me miss the PS1 version. Between the camera being so zoomed in and the batshit encounter rate, it wasn't a pleasant experience.

I'm kind of feeling lukewarm on the 3DS version in general. The accents are still a bit obnoxious to read without really adding any character, the encounter rate feels a lot worse due to dungeons not being restructured for field encounters (anywhere with a narrow passage you're guaranteed a few fights), intro is significantly worse (takes just as long, but now the puzzles are replaced with arbitrary busywork...?), and something about the camera feels really claustrophobic. I'm still enjoying it because I love Dragon Quest VII, I'm just struggling to see how any of the major tweaks have really helped the game at all. It feels a lot easier too, but that could be due in part to the encounter rate.

Oh, and Quick Save only being available on the world map is a bit worthless. It deletes itself anyways after a load, doesn't it?

So,
got to AllTrades Abbey island with just 3 party members now. I felt like the parting was a little more melancholy in the original. Maybe not, I can't remember. Disappointed that Maribel or Ruff didn't say anything at the gravesite.

But yeah, 17 hours in and I found the casino. I'm going to spend hours here bfore I move on, aren't I?

I thought that too in the beginning because I played with the Quick Save option in the first 2 hours and you don't really have any dungeons then. However, Quick Saves are permanent, it doesn't go away once you load it.

Also, you can quick save in the world map AND dungeons. Didn't realize this until about 16 hours in. Some dungeons have floors where you can't quick save, but that's usually only the rooms where there's a boss battle or a story event that was or will be triggered there. If you really need to save you can go down a flight of stairs and then save, but 95% of a dungeon typically works for quick saving.

Huh, good to know! Guess it makes sense then - I just assumed temp save based on it kicking you out of the game. And interesting! I didn't realize that either - the few times I've tried to use it, it didn't work. Guess I wasn't trying it in the right places.

Just curious, but aside from the intro and Dialic/Regenstein, has anything else been changed much or trimmed down in the 3DS version?

Just curious, how are you guys building your
Ruff? He's a bit of a weird one. He has a small MP Pool but is decently strong physically. Also, I'm considering going Sage with Maribel, and Hero for MC (a tradition that I always do with job classes in RPGs)

Really loving the remake so far. I'm about 12 hours in just got through the Frobisher boss. One problem though is that the game doesn't seem to have cursor memory and I can't find an option for it....surely it's in there right? Am I missing something?

There's cursor memory for some things like in-battle spell or ability or on-the-field item selections, but most of them reset.

I wouldn't say this is fully 'easy'. The difficulty spikes a bit when you get to the Abbey, mostly due to reduction of powers. It can be a bit of a bitch.

They offer some good tools to deal with that part of the game, at least. It's the first time spellcasting items become available.

I've pretty much leveled up the vocations necessary for him to unlock Gladiator, Paladin, Pirate and Monster Masher. I see him as a solid physical attacker with some great abilities to sweep hordes.

I suspect most people didn't even try using the wizard's staff (or whatever it's called in English) as an item during that portion.

I think defining games in to stuff of what they "should," and "shouldn't" do is silly.

I think DQVII frames everything well enough that needing to find the fragments/shards on your own is pretty essential to the experience. I think the fragment radar and the hint system is a perfect compromise. Otherwise they would need to be distributed through un-missable cutscenes and if they did that why even structure the game the way that it's structured.

This is my 3rd play through of this game and I have never missed a necessary fragment. It's a game that definitely rewards exploration.

I don't think it's controversial to describe DQ7 as a game with flaws. This doesn't mean it's a bad game at all, but there's things the developers made mistakes on. The game has systems built to guide the player in the right direction to find these objects and here's a situation where those systems failed. In this remake the developers had to create another couple of hint systems to try to rectify this problem. The developer could have made scenario and level design choices such that none of these sort of systems would have been necessary. There's a lesson for game designers here.

I'm not asserting that there are concrete and unbreakable rules of game design here, just that there are other approaches that would have created better, less confusing, outcomes for the player.

Finished that terrible mech storyline. Now I remember why I hate it.

it's so dumb. The king is trying to make automatons but there's a fucking cave to the east with tech to help them make one completely ignored. The party knows everything about the past and just lets them continue on making mechs knowing full well that they know what happens in the end. The entire country somehow forgets that their entire country was almost wiped by A ROBOT ARMY just centuries ago and are totally keen on making new ones. Not a single documented record of Autonymus, his brother or our party of heroes. It's just bad writing through and through. Literally the only saving grace is ELLIE, dead Autonymus and soup. Probably the worst vignette in the game and among the dumbest in all of DQ.

Thank god it's over.

The next vignette has always been more my speed. If I want to deal with morons I want to deal with TRAGIC morons. Almost done with that one now!

I get what you're saying, but I still disagree, especially with this statement, because I would argue that those systems aren't necessary. If someone gets stuck, it happens.

I was also just responding to this statement.

Basic game design tip: The player needs an item to advance, block them until they get that item.

This solution in this context would be a boring one. Is all I was trying to say. So the snarky phrase "Basic game design" is both silly and wrong.

Maybe with an entirely new game they coulda but since this was a remake they're kinda stuck with the absolutely awful structure of the original DQ7. This game got lots of problems an what you're describing definitely is one of 'em. Advancing the game totally should not feel like a chore, nor a confusing one at that!

Every post-2 DQ is easy. The series is marketed as being for RPG beginners in Japan, and has for years. It's made for everyone to enjoy.

That's why I've never understood the stigma the series has in the west, unless it came from people who only played 1 or 2 on NES.
I dunno man i always felt the dq games had a decent difficulty level altho a few aectiosn in dq5 did seem pretty hard for me

The past was pretty good, but I agree, the present felt like there was a lot that could have been said and wasn't. I think they were going for a history repeats itself message, but executed it very poorly. The next two islands definitely make up for it and then it's
Alltrades! And Casinos!

Finally got to the Alltrades Abbey

I gotta say, there's a moment right before that that really got to me.
When you revisit the island with the Almighty's shrine on it and find that gravestone overlooking the beach that marks the gravesite of Lala and Keifer...man that got to me a bit. I wasn't expecting that, even though I maybe should've. It was a really nice moment.

Same,

Everything about that arc seemed better executed this time around. I was so much sadder about that event than I was when I first played it, but maybe that's because
I expected him to come back, so I didn't take it as seriously.

Same, that whole part after was pretty moving
Specially when you go to the castle and the King is so eager to see his son and let him know he approves, then his sister, and everybody in town. Then you hit the grave and its like, oh yeah the friend you just left is dead now.

I unlocked Thin Air a little while ago and holy crap, I won't be changing that vocation for a long time apparently.

Speaking of which, is there an updated/accurate list of vocations anywhere? There's one anemic FAQ on GameFAQs but it looks like a copy/paste from the PSX version and I get the impression it isn't complete since there are pages and pages of blank spots in the vocation list in-game

All of the advanced human vocations are covered in the book on the counter in Alltrades. All the other spots are monster classes. No new classes were added to the game as far as I'm aware.

Also Champion retains Thin Air, though you'd need to master Gladiator alongside Paladin in order to move up to it.

I like to alternate Ruff and the main between Gladiator and Paladin so I generally always have a Paladin before moving on to Champion.

They also have multi-heal, kazing, and magic barrier which are all useful as hell

No for sure the remake developers' hands are a bit tied here. My criticism is about the original developers of the PS1 game in this context.

Yup. One of my quibbles with the remake. Should have added both past and present forms to zoom to be honest.

One of mine as well. That and tht encounter rate being a bit too high in some dungeons.

Just made it to all trades abbey and in one dungeon I hade about 8 fights one after the other as the enemies seemed to spawn right in that spot. Managed to get in the menu and use Evac to stop it though. Werent sure if it bugged or was just bad luck

I love it when a monster spawns right in front of a door.

And by love i mean i start to leak a murderous rage every time it happens.

Are the girl and old man characters in the cover art optional party members? I find it strange that nobody has entered the party in such a long time and I'm suspecting that maybe I missed them or something.

How many hours or islands until you are able to download the tablets that expire soon? Haven't had much time to play and I'm worried that I'll miss them.

The third island should be enough, it unlocks the Haven. Then you have to find three NPCs to recruit to the haven which will upgrade the place with the Download Bar. Talking to the initial NPC, and then to NPCs you recruit will give you hints to the next one's location and there should be 3 available from the start.

Ok I am now up to a town with
Mechs
how long before I get jobs? my characters are all 14 well except the new one

You're getting closer. :p You still have a few more hours until you unlock the class system.

I dunno if I'm just getting used to DQ games in general, but this one feels really easy. Normal attacks from enemies barely do anything to my party, and I don't even grind. I had trouble with that bandit fight with the four guys, but otherwise it's mostly been a breeze. Hoping things get tougher.

What level are you?

There are a few tougher enemies that you'll fight soon, like
Gracos
.

They're party members that you'll have to find at later points in the game.

This game gives me pretty big Terranigma-vibes somehow.

But no one asked me to bring them a pot/basket and then yelled at me for trying to help but failing because I had no choice due to game mechanics =(

Edit: It sure would be cool to bring Terranigma to the VC, and in doing so also properly release it in NA...

So I bought the game on day one, but only just started playing yesterday in the plane back from Berlin. I played a good amount in the evening too, it's my first Dragon Quest game and although I'm a pretty old gamer with many old JRPGS being one of my favorite games ever, I have to say...

...fuck me that start is slow. Don't get me wrong, I do like stuff I'm pretty hooked on its story, world and characters (Toriyama art is just too cute man, I love it) but I hope it really takes off soon because I realize as I get older I'm less patient than I used to be and I let many games on the side that might be really good afterwards but starts off too slow and probably will never finish. Please tell me it won't last for another hour ? I went in blind for this game as I really wanted the surprise. Also what's up with those menus ?! Why couldn't they make them snappier for the remake ? I mean I'm all for old school experiences, but you don't necessarily have to deal with really cumbersome and slow interfaces in the process. I know I'll surely (and painfully) get used to them, but gosh isn't that a miss. Anyway, back to it.

PS : Maribel is a dick.

So I'm pretty lost again. I'm hunting down some guy for a sizzle stone and he is never anywhere. The maid said try his primo pallaso or something and i feel relentlessly stuck. The guides I found all use different names too so that didn't help.
