Some of you guys need to learn how to use Zoom and Evac.

So how long is this version of the game total? How Long to Beat isn't very helpful.

I will be getting this game pretty soon but I have a quick question maybe you guys can help. I really only have time for one game right now. Should I start Bravely Second or this first?

Bravely Second is a shorter game but isn't as good.

It depends on if you want to spend less time, but have less fun. Or do you want to spend more time having more fun.

After all the complaints about the Alltrades quest I guess I was expecting something way worse, but that ended up being my favorite story arc so far. Just finished it.

It just goes on for a bit to long.

I also think that whole story with the brother, the sister & the that one guy isn't all to compelling of a story.

Holy shiiiit, waste a lot of time finding the guy who can speak to animal....................

Yeah, that was a little vague. I knew exactly who it was though because the pax demo was for tje next part after that when you have him in your party.

this is why you should fully explore every area as soon as you have access to it!

i have to say though, it's funny how party chat won't reveal who it is even though they keep telling you I'M PRETTY SURE I KNOW WHO THIS IS

I don't find the Alltrades Abbey quest long at all. Epic, yeah. It feels good when you finally get it done. Though the story isn't necessarily one of my faves, but the game's challenge picks up decently there.

Alltrades Abbey's quest is gaming's biggest cock tease.

Look! An entire job system! The world is at your fingertips!
LOL JK
also, fuck your spells and abilities

One little touch I really like was upon making Ruff a paladin, where he gets a crested helmet like the others. And so does his wolf. Made me smile, anyway! :)

I'd been meaning to beat Bravely Default first before tackling Bravely Second. Will probably stubbornly soldier on with my original save (but see if there's any recaps I can go over first.) I sometimes forget I DO have that game, I got the LE despite this, probably unwise but damn that's a good artbook.

Can't at all agree with that story not being compelling. It was suspenseful the entire way through, there was real character growth, and their resolution at the end paid off well.

If the RNG hates you enough, the challenge skyrockets.

Just keep trying. Im up to 50 hours and that's been the worst fight in the game hands down. Eventually the RNG in terms of when he does the sand attack and when it sticks will go in your favour and you win.

Yeah, that's a bad fight. Thank God that I won a lot of tokens at the casino to get good armor before taking on that part of the game.

Whoever had the bright idea to stuff that place full of scorpions who randomly (and by "randomly" I mean all the time) decide to hit party members for 40-50 HP in a single attack in a chapter where your only source of renewable healing heals for like 20 HP and only during battle is a fucking dick.

Fuck that item, seriously. I'm pretty sure you can't use it outside of battle, either, which would save A LOT of grief. You're better off buying a shitload of Medicinal Herbs.

Seems like you must have really shitty gear. Those scorpions were hitting for 1 damage most of the time for me.

I don't think that's it. The scorpions have a rare (if the RNG is kind to you) "desperate" attack where it will hit someone for 30-50 damage. So yeah, hopefully people don't encounter a whole group of scorpions who spam that attack.

And speaking of desperate attacks, the final boss of the Alltrades area,
Cardinal Sin
, kind of has a move like that, but it hits TWICE, does about 50-70 damage per hit, and can hit the same character twice. I only saw it once and it hit different characters, but yeah, AGAIN, pray that RNG is on your side. And give Snooze/the Snooze Stick a try; I had Maribel cast Snooze and it actually worked!

I honestly don't find this game all that hard, maybe I grind a bit to much at times. But really other then the
the final fight with the Pig and Tiger boss when saving the Real Alltrades Priest

Is this an interesting game, or is it mostly boring? Do you have to play for fifty hours to get anywhere?

The game is pretty slow to start mechanically with stuff getting introduced around 1 hour, 7 hours and 20 hours that would usually be introduced within 20 minutes to an hour.

Theres fairly reasonable story and the mechanics that are introduced are generally sufficient to be interesting. The first hour is probably the biggest challenge if you like *doing* things since its got a lot of walking simulator to it. The 7 hour mark is only annoying if you're trying to get the time limited online content and not planning to play the game right now, which makes it feel like a 7 hour chore, it's fine taken as part of the game if you're intending to play the whole thing.

There's something compelling about it, yeah. There isn't a big overarching plot with a clearly defined villain (or at least I haven't seen it yet at 40 hours), but rather it's been a lot of bite-sized self-contained stories. I guess it's kind of like a video game version of Bill & Ted's Excellent Adventure? I dunno. It's good though, and this is my first Dragon Quest

Dragon Quest VII's narrative structure reminds me a little (only a little, mind you) of Kubrick's personal blueprint. Little self-contained episodes strung together to form an overarching story. Although I wouldn't necessarily consider each DQVII episode a "non-submersible unit." :p

Maybe it's because I got some great equipment from the Casino but I haven't had much of a problem with AllTrades Abbey yet. The Hero having a war hammer dealing 30-50 damage a turn is pretty great, along with having pretty much all of the best armors.
I've only beaten Rashers and Stripe so far though. Had to use a Yggdrasil Leaf, but around 50% of my boss battles, at least one person ends up dying, so that's the norm for me.

I dunno, if anything I'd say DQVII seems like an alternate take on Chrono Trigger, but while CT would be Bill & Ted's Excellent Adventure, this is more like Quantum Leap or something. Episodic adventures that are largely unrelated about fixing up problems.

By 40 hours they should have defined a villain, but it's very understated at first. The talk about the reason why the world is as it is, and name
The Almighty and the Demon King Orgodemir and discuss their cataclysmic battle.

So did everybody else, the OT is a wasteland. It's a real shame because it's a great game and I suspect people skipped it over fears of a BD-esque second half (fears that are unfounded).

That's a bummer. I'm going through BD right now and having a lot of fun with it. Cannot wait to start DQVII, but I'm definitely gonna hit up Bravely Second first since it's shorter.

I wouldn't describe bravely second as great. Good maybe. An improvement over bd, sure. But it's servicable at best

I started seeing mentions of the Demon King being built up around the 15-20 hour mark myself. I guess my prior DQ experience helps me get through the game faster though, despite taking my time with talking to NPCs and looking around.

Funny thing is, I enjoyed all of bravely default, even the end half. I thought it was an interesting exercise in storytelling, if not the best thing from an actual gameplay view point. Something about Bravely Second felt off point to me though, didn't feel like had the same ambition with some of the themes, the book, said storytelling in the first. I really thought the first game was very clever.

Going through the storyline in Nottagen right now. Haha, pretty entertaining.

15 hours in and my only complaint is that it's too pretty. Seriously, the ...quaintness of the original is so ingrained in my head that these big, detailed character models and their articulate expressions feel completely at odds with the cute, squat, adorably awkward sprite work I'm used to. It gives the game an entirely different personality and I still haven't quite been able to wrap my head around it.

As for actual criticisms, I dunno. The way they handled the replacement for the temple dungeon in the prologue was pretty lazy. I've never been one of those people who complains about how long it takes to get to the first battle, but I always felt that the little Indiana Jones dungeon run broke up the monotony and acts as a nice reward for all the running around. Opening some chests and talking to a little imp and selecting things from a menu kind of ruins the magic for me.

So I'm still in "I don't like it because it's not what I'm used to!" mode, but I'm sure I'll get over it. It's a pretty impressive remake so far, and the localization seems solid.

Yes, those names and events have been mentioned, but at this point nearly every civilization I've visited has had their own
deities so it's hard to know when the game is trying to say "okay THIS is the one that's actually relevant to your party"

Does anyone know how many Mini Medals you need to
get the tablet fragment in King Maximo's Mansion? Or at least, I assume I'm going to need to do that, as the radar goes crazy when I'm in there and the only thing that makes sense is to get enough medals for him to give me the fragment. I think I'm at 37 or so right now.

Sorry if the spoiler is kind of vague or if it's even a spoiler at all. For context I just beat Gracos.

I'm at the Ygg tree and I have the empty container. So I stand under the dew drops and I cannot collect them in the container?

I had the same question and Googled it, the answer is
100. But I don't know if it's a fragment that's required to complete the game. I'm thinking it's not, but if it is, I guess I'm not finishing the game :p

This was frustrating, yeah. If I remember correctly,
I stood in the spot where the drops were falling and pressed A, or went into the menu and hit Examine. Something like that

Zoom? What is Zoom? When does it work? When doesn't it work? Not in the past. Sometimes not even in the present! Why? Who could say? Enjoy your trips trekking through the Mountaintop Pass 4 times!

Zoom just doesn't work in the past or in buildings/dungeons. It works in open towns and in the present.

Sounds like you're getting burnt out. Take a break for a few days. I don't think this game is meant to be something you grind through. I'm 25-30 hours in and still loving it, but I take a break from it every few days.

The zepling tablet is good if u r at level 20-22 as i am still getting points to ward vocation levels
Also i have more plichard pies than i think ill ever need

Beaten: I was going to post this.

Bravely Second has a really neat battle system and significant quality-of-life extras (encounter rate, battle speed, whether or not you accrue XP or money from fights) and you get to play with different jobs almost from the outset. The story is bleh but thankfully skipable (you showed up for the jobs, right?). The boss fights are terrific. Edea is terrific. It's great.

On the other hand, Dragon Quest :D

tl;dr

They're both pretty great games. It doesn't matter which you go for; fun will be had!

Zoom not working in the past is something I will never fully get over. At first I thought I was doing something wrong.
