Dragon Quest 9 |OT| Last chance* to shine

So where are these framerate issues happening? Or is it pretty constant?

I remember in DQ 5, everytime you went to this grass hut town (don't remember the name of it), the framerate would drop significantly. And it was just that one town, everything else was fine. At least from what I noticed.

I see framerate drops with four party members in a variety of scenes; heavy grass plus a few monsters in the overworld, city scenes with multiple characters, etc. Interiors and dungeons generally seem to be spared.

Loving this, too, although I didn't realize you could recruit a party for the Wight Knight so I ground until level 14 solo and then went and beat him :p. I'm now nicely over-levelled for everything, though, fought the Witch at level 16 with three level 12 party members, hehe.

Apparently when you have a full party and when you head into towns.

I guess that ruins my plan.

I put somewhere between 140-150 hours into DQ7 on my PSP and fully completed it. Main quest and post-endgame content.

I can honestly say that were it not for my PSP, DQ7 would have been the only mainline DQ I would never have finished.

I had the same problem with my DS charger when I went to India. The problem is that the DS charger inconveniently happens to have a different voltage than most other chargers and the converter is either too strong or not strong enough, I don't remember exactly. The DS's charger is I believe 120v and you can try looking for a converter that's compatible with the DS charger. I came across one in India and basically it was a converter with a dial on it with which you could change the voltage.
Yeah I figured it was something like that. I never had a problem charging my DS Lite when I stayed by my mom's during these trips. But they have a bunch of those heavy duty converters. My sister only has one of those smaller ones meant for minor electronics. It must not be strong enough. I'll be spending the next few nights at my parents, so I guess I can live another night without DQ9.

Maybe.

Thanks for responding though!

What's the interplay between classes and weapon skills as far as learning abilities, transfering skills etc. goes? Also is it possible to max out all weapon skills or is it like DQVIII where the maximum numbers of points is less than you'd need? Also can you reset your skills if you feel you've gone down a path that isn't going to be beneficial in the long term.

So what level do I probably need to be to fight Wight Knight?

My main was 11 and the 3 others(priest,Mage and Warrior where 8) bring some medicine for everyone and you should be fine around that level...I also geared them up a bit, defence wise, all I could afford.

Did you find a solution for charging your DS Mejilan?
Worst case there has to be some store that sells chargers for different parts of the world or converters. You could try and go to some hotel and ask them if they got some and where did they got it. Thats what I did last time I was in UK

I took him down with my hero at level 9 and the rest of my party at 5. The mage died right before the last blow (and immediately prior to landing a heal on him, damn it). It was a close fight, closer than it needed to be considering I forgot about Hot Licks until half way through.

Kind of. I've decided that my sister's converter is a piece of crap, and that DQ9 will have to wait until tomorrow, at which point I'll have access to their more robust converters. It's what I've been doing for the last couple of years whenever I've flown down to visit the family. This is just the first time I spend a number of sequential days at my sister's instead.

It`s not that bad on the small DS screen, you notice it but nothing serious,IMHO anyway...

Well, I was planning on playing it on my DSi XL. Or would that be a bad idea because it would be more noticeable?

Honestly, I don't mind the slow-down with a full party. That's like a DQ tradition! At least it's just dropped frames instead of the slowdown _and_ flickering we endured back in the NES days!

So I fought Wight Knight at level 9 with my party at level 7.
I had me (A Minstrel) a Mage, a Priest and a Warrior.

My mage died about 2 turns in, but then I just spammed attack with my MC and Warrior and then Defend or heal when needed with my priest, and he went down pretty fast.

I went back to the Inn and the Wi-Fi shop lady wasnt there, do I have to
find that town that Wight is from first?

I don't think the slowdown is a big deal. It's just while walking through town with a full party and there are a couple townies on screen. I haven't seen any slowdown in framerate out in the field.

Yeah I'm not sure why folks would make a purchasing decision for DQ based on it, it's more a curiosity for those of us who are involved in game dev, wondering what the hell they're doing with so little on screen to get such performance :p.

It's cute when you notice not all the people in the game are polygonal, too. Like when the sprite guards come and escort Princess Mona away after the Witch fight :p.

My Hero is apparently an "alternative" hero. He just needs a better shield so he can be totally ~stylin~
I wish I had made a girl main character, because the female Minstrel armor is so cool looking.

My main was at 8, and the others were at 5 or so I think. I had a main/thief/mage/cleric

I had purchased the best Claws I could afford. Armor was middling. The main had a large defense but the others were eh. Pretty much all my damage came from casting the ice spell.

edit: others must have been 6 because my mage had just gotten crack

Quick question. I've noticed there is an Adventure log and a Quick-Save Log.

Does this technically mean you could have 2 separate characters (one you ONLY save under the adventure log, the other you ONLY save under the Quick-Save log)?

Or do you lose the Quick Save when you turn off the DS

I've been playing it on both my original DS fat and my new DSi XL and I prefer the graphics on the fat's smaller screen. They seem sharper and the smaller screen hides a lot of the imperfections of the graphics. It's like the DSi XL makes you notice how outdated the graphics are in DQ IX. The flat pixelated characters look really odd on the the XL. The 3D characters look pretty good though. I'll probably play through most of the game with my XL, because I just spent a bunch of money on something that I'll rarely touch when the 3DS comes out.

You lose the quick save once you use it...if you do a regular save, there`s no quick save to go to after...

I really do not see what this framerate thing is all about, unless I am just not far enough in.
I just finished the Wight Knight arc, and have not noticed anything at all while running with four in my group no matter where I go.

You notice it a bit in Stornway only, not that much in the field...

Happens for me running through Stornway, it's just barely perceptible. This is nothing approaching game breaking or even, in my opinion, mildly irritating. DQIX is not Shadow of the Colossus.

Take a party member out then run around a little bit.

I'm thinking about making my main character look like Crono and making the rest of my crew Chrono Trigger themed. The spiky red hair and green eyes are easy enough, but I wonder if any of the armor looks similar in appearance.

I really had no idea how customizable this game was before I bought it. Are all the members that join your team permanently similarly as customizable as the lead?

The actual problem is that unlike most chargers, the DS charger is not multistage. It only accepts one type of voltage. So standard outlet adapters do not work in other areas of the world. I had to buy a voltage transformer for 40 bucks in order to use my charger in the UK.

It would be cheaper just to buy a UK DS charger in the UK since the use the same port it works fine. I had to buy a transformer since I could expense it as a business expense.

Gotta ask again if anyone has a class guide that they can link?, it would be a great help. There is just to much to do in this game, what the fuck was Yuji Horii talking about 40 hours for a normal games playthrough??!! :lol I think I can play well over 100 hrs with this sucker.

Is anyone else main character kinda weaksauce? My MC can do shit while my Warrior is wrecking fools and my Mage ( when she isn;t trying to hit people despite having full MP) is making fools explode and shit. I can't wait to change class'

Currently obsessing over making my party. Thank the Almighty (har) that there's backup slots so I can make multiple people, stare at them, and find out who I like the best.

Uh, really? Apparently I'm completely overlooking where the backup slots. I'm having a rough go at creating an ideal character (I always do, I hate choice!) and I've started over a couple of times to get to the character creation.

I mean your party, when you get to where you can recruit more people, there are 8 backup slots.
