Dragon Quest 9 |OT| Last chance* to shine

I finally figured out how to level from 1 to 45 very fast. Fast as in a matter of 20 minutes. I did a ton of research/sweat/pain and found out you need to find the place with a lot of King Metal Slimes.

Man, how do I kill a Metal Slime? They all run!
You just kind of have to hope they don't run on the first turn. But if you raise your agility, there's a higher chance that you'll act before them. Then either use skills like metal slash that are guaranteed to hit metal enemies, skills that have a chance to crit or instantly kill an enemy, or just use regular attacks and pray for a hit or a critical.

So I went ahead and bought the game despite my earlier stated hesitation, and holy hell, it is addicting.
Succes!

Yeah I'll probably get it, since my next purchase should be Metroid and that's pretty far away. Now, if only I'd be able to get it!

I beat the game already myself. Now, how do I start flying to areas I can't access normally?
Remember the scene in the ending where the fygg fell into the ocean? Head to Port Llafan and talk to Jona.

Fought my first metal slime last night: saw him dash past my party while I was in the menu and miraculously he was still around when I backed out. No metal slash, just hit with three party members on the first round and, in another stroke of luck, he stuck around for a second round.

I wondered whether the game was programmed to let you beat that first metal.

Yeah, I finally had success killing two just a minute ago. I was not expecting that much experience!

No, trust me, it's not. :lol

Does anyone have an estimate to how many copies Dragon Quest IX will sell in Ameica this month? Is it unlikely to sell over 100,000 copies???

I'm underwhelmed at the things you can do after you're able to fly :/

Most of the new places seem to be just a house or a well with a treasure or new quest... not to mention the game world seems small in comparison to previous dq games

Anyway, yeah underwhelmed by the extra quests, seems like most are just fetch quests :(
Not to mention that I suck at finding treausure map locations, so I can't progress further there either

Oh well, it was a nice ride while it lasted

edit: deleted some of the post, believe it or not, I don't know how to use spoiler tags

carlos,
The boss at the top of the tower is part of one of the DLC quests...
Anyway, yes, most of the post-game content is quests and treasure map dungeons. If that's not your thing, then there's not much for you to do.
And you really should probably spoiler tag some of your post.

Yes please Carlos, I'm trying to force one of the things I read in your post out of my head now. :lol

This Ragin' Contagin' is taking FOREVER.
It's not hard, it's just taking like 75 turns.

I still cannot beat that last boss and my team consists of a level 42 Ministrel, level 42 warrior, level 41 Mage and level 41 priest. All of them are decked out in pretty good equipment too...

I guess I`ll go find some liquid metal slimes and level them up once over and then try to find some better defensive equipment.

Heh, Miracle Sword is in my DQVC two days in a row. Been buying up the rings and ingredients as they show up.

Currently making another attempt at the dungeon in Gleeba. I guess I won't be a Paladin anytime soon, didn't realize they wouldn't equip swords. So I suppose I'll need to get another 60 points in that skill first.

Has anyone else completely struck out with their DQVC? Everything they've had so far sucks. I was reading in another forum and a guy was able to buy a Miracle Sword on his.

edit: For those who may not have realized, DQVC is different for everyone.

Yup, got a Miracle sword to appear first time I hooked it up. :) Had to remember to not connect back once I scrounged up the dough.

I haven't played a DQ game since the first, and holy hell this game makes me want to go back and play every since one of them -- as soon as I'm done with IX, of course :D

Me too :( Well, I just got past it, but I know where you people are.
I was just SURE that they would find a way to revive here... I couldn't believe it when they didn't!

I really REALLY like the story in this game.
It seemed like everyone had agreed it was the most mediocre part of the game before it came out here.

I think most people are talking about the overarching story when they say that. The little vignettes are really great, as they always have been in the series. And I don't even think the overarching story is that weak, either.

Boyfriend and I just started playing the co-op, and we are kind of disappointed with the experience. I knew that the story only advanced in the host world, but if you play only one person's world the whole game the guest seems like they would miss out on a lot. We tried redoing the same segment in the other player's world but then you would end up playing the whole game twice. What little I read about it here, it seemed like THE way to play it, but its not a true co-op game. Maybe my expectations are too high.

i loved DQ8, it's my favorite RPG of all time, but somehow I'm turned off by the graphics of DQ9. Does anyone feel the same? I'll still play it an finish it, but DQ8 looked so much prettier.

I have a soft spot for 3D like this, so naaaah. Not gonna compare it to a PS2 game!

Just unlocked Gladiator role. Damn, looking at the rest of the reqs I'm going to hate myself trying to unlock these classes. I guess the first metal slime farming spot is best for Armamentalist?

Question about multiplayer: If I join a friend's game and do dungeons/etc with him, do I have to go as my main character or can I choose any of my guys? I'm assuming it's main character only but otherwise would be awesome. Also, am I just one character in his party or can I bring someone from my party as well?

My boyfriend and I also went in wanting to play the whole game together......however as it turns out after playing for awhile, we understand how the multiplayer works.

We now play together and I'll bring in my character who may be a little underpowered due to class shift and we can run around together while I level up and I can accompany him on quests in his own game....this works for us cause we also have times alone when we want to play by ourselves but don't want to leave the other behind.

Any ideas where I should go next with my team? I have the hero as a warrior (with swords almost maxed, points in martial artist for psyche up) a priest likewise with spears, a martial artist with points in the class tree and ditto for a mage.

Thinking about taking Priest to Paladin and Mage to Sage when I have access to it. Gladiator for Martial Artist?

Can you only play as your main character in a friends game?

I just gained access to class change (well, just gained access to class change and then spent a few hours hunting metal slimes), and I am loving the game. I thought I would miss random encounters, but I haven't. I thought I would hate the way the job system works, but with the ability to transfer unassigned points across vocations I find it less stressful than managing DQVIII's skill lines. Still not ideal, mind you, but I can sort of pick a build for each character and then feel free to mess around with alternate vocations for extra points or party flexibility. I'm looking forward to exploring some more once my DS has recharged. Very, very happy so far.

I'm just noticing that I can't give party members weapons to just hold as an 'item', so they could use the item in battle for its effects. It's no big deal if the class can naturally equip the weapon, as they can just change the equipment then use the weapon's special effect. But if I wanted my Martial Artist to throw fireballs with a Cautery Sword or something, he can't.

Yeah crappy because I can't keep my priest with the magma staff in her inventory anymore, I'm pretty sure you could do this in all the previous games.

Anecdotal evidence ahoy! I bought the game at Wal-Mart last night out of their 'New Releases' display and it was the only one they had left. The electronics employee said it had been selling really well, so either it's gotten more attention or people in my area just have good taste in game software.

What's awesome is that it cost me nothing. Went to a casino with my wife and best friend and won almost $800 at Texas Hold 'Em. :D

Loving this game. About to fight the
White Knight
. I'm assuming I'm ok with a party of 3 level 8s and one level 10? (my main)

There were two slots in the 'New Releases' section marked for it. To fill it would've probably taken 24 or so? I didn't ask, I really should have.

I did it in the place where you fight the Ragin Contagion

I am thinking of going with a party of two minstrels, thief and ranger.
Would I be making it too difficult on myself that way?

Is there any benefit for having a party more than 4?
Or should I just stick with my 4 and not having any additional members in the inn?

I currently have my Main, Martial Artist, Mage and Priest.

Stick with 4. Having more than four means you'd be spreading points out even more.

I love the
old man and his young wife with bunny ears.

I don't mean to be a bother, but I'll repost my question from last page since people didn't seem to notice...

When going into a friend's game in multiplayer, can I bring a character that is not the main character? Thanks to anyone who answers this! :]

Oh I beat it ohhhh what a battle. Oh my goodness....sweet mama juju

Ohhhhhhhhhhhhh

Here's a recap

I was very confident as the battle started with my warrior (Forlan)getting 1000 hits with the use of my spells, my priest is healing like he's never healed before and I thought it would only be a matter of time before I won. Unfortunately, things don't go quite as I planned as the boss slowly takes out three of my four members but not before my Mage (Mia) can heal my warrior a little bit and stave off defeat for one more round. After the boss attacks and the previous round ends it's down to a one on one showdown between that evil bastard and my warrior. My warrior has amazing defense but he's way too slow to attack first and with only 57 hp left I know I need a miracle. Boss attacks first with a magic attack.........
but my Mirror Armor sends that shit right back at him, 241 damage......
I am victorious!!!!

The spoilers are very mild, basically a confirmation of a certain piece of equipment.

Where am I supposed to go after Gleeba?
I tooled around to some islands before finding a beach that leads to the Snowberian Coast and Urdus Marshlands. I assume it's one of those two.

Head east and dock on the beach south of the icy area on the map. You can then go to two different places from there.
