Thanks for the input, I might get into the ones on Steam first then..not too huge overt anime tropes. Only exception is P5 !

I will say that the characters of Cold Steel do go off in more interesting directions but they all start of as overly tropey

Also yeah go for the Steam ones first! They start of slow but they have great characters and take you on a really entertaining and for even emotional journey.
I used to say that trails in the sky does nothing super amazing and is just rock solid all around but over the last few years there's been nothing in JRPGs besides Persona that had me that engaged story/character wise. It definitely stuck with me the most.
