EDGE: The next Xbox: Always online, no second-hand games, 50GB Blu-ray and new kinect

Licorice-flavoured booze?
I'm surprised how many people think this would spell the end for MS and Sony in the console market if such security measures were to be implemented, provided both consoles had the same restrictions I don't think this would have much of an impact tbh.

It is believed that games purchased on disc will ship with activation codes, and will have no value beyond the initial user.

I needed a proper excuse to leave console gaming for good and this is it. Unless Sony allows second hand purchases, in which case I will eventually talk myself into buying a PS4.

So Game stop, the video game store, wouldn't carry what is likely to be the biggest console? If that's the case they might as well close up shop now.

Their entire business model is centered around buying and selling used games and not selling new hardware so yeah, they will close up shop.

Sounds like EDGE has a PS4 love affair going on they talked about the PS4 just as much as they did the Xbox 3 in this article.

$1.8 billion from trade ins, how much are devs and publishers losing from those $1.8 bil in trade ins themselves? A lot more than they are gaining- that's not healthy.

You lost me. How are developers losing money when companies such as Gamestop are giving out trade? That 1.8 billion is going towards new games which is healthy for the developers and publishers, correct?

So, twenty years from now when you want to play an "old" Durango game and the servers to check your ID are no longer running - is the game unlocked or is it a coaster?

But yeah, it would suck if you couldn't play because your ISP happened to be down for some reason.

Jesus... I mean, that always online thing probably won't be true, but the second hand thing? what a kick in the arse to some people.

I could almost see a reason for Sony NOT to do it if Microsoft does this no second hand games thing. It would be a significant marketing advantage. Sure, they've always wanted to do this, and are doing it with selling digital versions of games, but the first company to actually make sure physical copies of games are dead after a first run might shoot their foot off.

Some games will always sell. If EA says I'm taking my FIFA to x3, Sony will have to bend over backwards. Same with Activision and COD. And if X3 has fifa & COD and Sony does not, that's probably it for Sony, no? billion dollar franchisees and all that.

So many rumors... We will see how many were true. If the used games provision is true it will make my decision to play on PC only easier. I can't imagine one console will do it and not the other.

It's fun to watch folks plug their ears and yell "nyah-nyah-not-happening-la-la-la-can't-hear-you" through this element of the story.. hehe..

Regardless of how things unfold, this is going to be an absolutely fascinating generation to witness.

Not a pretence that it won't happen (no matter how much trollishness you try to interpret in my previous post), but a statement of opinion that it won't simply be a case of one party going that route, when the consequences would be devastating.

Devs will just only make games for Durango if Sony opts out

No chance publishers would forfeit that kind of money, could you really see Activision only releasing COD on one system if Sony choose not to implement the same restrictions?

If the other one does it too, I will only wish the same level of failure and disaster that way, too. There is such a pandora's box with this that no genuinely intelligent consumer should be fine with this for the console space. Period.

Hmm always online you say?

No second sales you say?

ed-nortan-laptop.gif

To kick consumers while they are done further MS will probably still be charging for xbox live.

I wonder what implications this will have for services like redbox and gamefly if any (other than the obvious they won't be able to stock durango titles).

Thinking about it though always online for other places around the world are going to simply cripple MS, it's pretty stupid if they do it, I don't think their that dumb. (I hope)

I would seriously consider a WiiU only gaming at that point.

If both go in, consumers will have to deal with it. yes.

so they'd pass up on possibly the largest system/base - one with likely similar specs as the durango, minimizing the cost of porting - because why, if you cant keep 100% of the profits, you'll pass on something like 70%? not seeing the logic here

now if you wanna argue they'll continue treating MS' system as the primary development one, yeah that could happen

So, twenty years from now when you want to play an "old" Durango game and the servers to check your ID are no longer running - is the game unlocked or is it a coaster?

this is always a question with DD services, but as a consumer, i feel better with valve because they're not going anywhere, and i can strip out the DRM from my purchases as i please. but yeah, neither of those look to be true here

I really hope not, I enjoyed my 360 immensely this gen and it was my main 'HD' console.

I planned to go with its successor next gen too over PS4 (until an exclusive hits on PS4 I had to have then I'll have all 3 consoles :p) but if these silly things end up being true I wont be looking at the new Xbox.

I don't even care if GameStop falls. This move destroys game rental services. That's just a very hard pill to swallow.

the always online is probably true.. rumours where that MS (& Sony) would try to go Apple´s way this gen. And an iPad without internet, is like having an expensive mirror in your home.

If it's "always online" then I expect some kind of Offline mode. You cannot make a console with a large userbase being children and expect it to always be connected to the internet. US from what iv seen has terrible bandwidth caps an always online anything is a detriment to this.

No second hand games on the other had is something I fully expect. Its a real shame but I won't be effected because I only buy new. Still I do not condone it.

My guess is Always Online has been taken out of context. It could be as simple as games benefit from having an internet connection.

If both companies seriously went anti used games, I honestly think we would see a videogame market crash and the end of console gaming.

Heh, No second hand games is fine by me. But always online isnt.

I hope PS4 doesn't support that always online shit.

Oh.. I see no malice in your post whatsoever. I rather agree with you emphatically.

We've known about the possibility of always-online and anti-secondhand technologies for, what, over a year now? I wonder if EDGE has new information that's leading them to believe they'll be implemented, or if they're just combining the nearly-confirmed specs with old rumors deciding to kick the hornet's nest. It would be awfully Kotaku-like of them, but I wouldn't rule it out.

I have bought the total amount of 0 secondhand games this gen. But I exchange (borrow) alot of games among friends, so does this mean I am screwed too?

I'm not for taking away the used market but how is this different than the pc market now? You can't resell pc games at gamestop or bestbuy...Because I hear most people saying they will stick with pc but its the same there pretty much with just a better steam sell?

No second hand games is crap. What other consumer market blocks the resale of goods like this? And say goodbye to renting games. This is ridiculous.

Next Xbox games will be manufactured on 50GB-capacity Blu-ray discs, Microsoft having conceded defeat to Sony following its ill-fated backing of the HD-DVD format. It is believed that games purchased on disc will ship with activation codes, and will have no value beyond the initial user.

I'd be happy with that if I didn't have to put the disc in again to play a game.

I would like a system where I could get a disc of a game to install it to a HDD (as it helps save on my bandwidth usage, but I would still like updates to happen over the net and I'm mostly OK with them being somewhat large), put the disc away and play it without the disc.

When I am done with it I could uninstall it but if I want to play it again I could get the disc and reinstall it.

I don't really buy 2nd hand games (I think I have bought 2 for my 360 this gen) so although it sounds kind of crappy I can live without it (but I won't be too happy about it).

The only thing I don't like is always on DRM as I can't guarantee my net connection being up and running 24/7. I'd be OK with it having to be online to activate the game once to register an activation code and getting a license for the console and for the Xbox Live account but to have to always be on seems way to harsh.

You lost me. How are developers losing money when companies such as Gamestop are giving out trade? That 1.8 billion is going towards new games which is healthy for the developers and publishers, correct?

exactly. used games don't come from thin air. someone traded that in, meaning Gamestop either paid that individual for it, or more likely offered store credit for newer games. when Gamestop does this it takes a hit on the sale of a new game it bought from the publisher at full price.

the used games model subsidizes the new game business. end it and watch the sales of 60 dollar games fall off a cliff.

Of the 75 million Xbox sold, how many we're to the hardcore/GAF crowd that cares about any of this? 5 million? The other 70 million don't give a shit about this as long as they get their COD and Madden

Exactly, plus the PC used market was never big to begin with.

Take away used games and I guarantee you people will just stick with the PS3/360. I'm sure Nintendo is hoping to god they try something like this though.

PC games are much cheaper and with pretty much the whole catalogue being available digitally as well, you do not end up with 'rare' Japanese/Eastern importing needed for some titles. These titles can have low prints, meaning importing new isn't always an option.

I've imported a few PS3 games.

:p Perhaps one hardware generation later... perhaps... such measures could be implemented, but I honestly cannot see either company being so blind to the resulting effects in this climate. with this digital infrastructure, at this time, as to try to enforce such dystopic draconian restrictions.
