EDGE: The next Xbox: Always online, no second-hand games, 50GB Blu-ray and new kinect

It's adapting poorly. It just feels lazy and badly thought out, its also not particularly sustainable in the long run I think. As others have mentioned eliminating second hand sales only gurantees that people arent buying stuff second hand, it doesnt mean theyre going to buy stuff brand new

This, I bought Genji 2 for the PS3 because I saw it for $5 used. I would never have bought it for anything higher than that. It was a sale at a used price or no sale at all.

Why do people keep saying, "I hope Sony doesn't do this," "Sony better not do this." but these rumours are about the Xbox? If M$ does this, then obviously Sony is gonna make sure not to do it so they can cater to the fans.

Looks like I can't sell my used games. I really hope Microsoft will support day one digital downloads because there is absolutely no reason to buy a physical copy anymore.

Wasn't there a rumor about Sony doing this?

I buy my games new but this would totally kill the new Xbox if you add that supposedly the PS4 is more powerful.

Don't fuck it up MS. It's either your console or I retire from gaming.

Some think that third parties will abandon Sony if it doesn't do it as well.

I think we have multiple rumors being smashed up into one sensationalized rumor.

Always on - required for DVR service. - Rumor
Anti-used games. - Digital Downloads that can't be sold.

That is my assumption. Hopefully someone in the know can verify.

That's Microsoft's share price over the last decade. It not the shining beacon of a company that consistently makes good financial decisions.

Investors works on the principal of if a company will grow. Several investors thinks that Microsoft has reached it's peak and will only transfer it's market, but not grow consistently. Investors has also started to think the same about Apple.

The value of a shares is only as high as brokers are willing to pay for.

In an ideal world... the publisher of Genji would see that its not selling at full price, and reduce it until it hits a point where people are more okay with impulse buying it. Currently they can't do that BECAUSE of used games sales.

Not that easy if 3rd parties have both console makers at gunpoint making sure both follow.

Otherwise the next COD will not come out on one system.

There's no way this is true though the more I think about it. Gamestop is practically doomed if Sony and Microsoft go in together on this no used games stuff, and I don't think it benefits them enough to lost all the advertising from Gamestop, the specials, consoles sold there, etc.

I mean if this is true, this is it for Gamestop. Obviously it can't stand on just new hardware and software sales alone, and it's definitely not getting that much revenue from the Wii U, and likely never will, so this would be it. I just don't see this happening right now. It doesn't make business sense.

If new games were released in the $30 range, then not having a second hand option is alright with me.

But current retail prices with no way of selling them. I'm not going to bother with the system

Bad, if true? yes. Dealbreaker? no.

If the exclusive software is there, sadly I will be too. For me this is much more of a reason to be worried about because of the gaming ghetto that is 360 since 2010.

that mandatory connectivity shit is BS, you should only have to do that once to activate the game. Now you cant take your shit anywhere w/o a reliable internet connection. It aint even really like that on PC, minus a few Ubisoft or EA games.

What about those specs though, how good is their shit? How does it compare to say, a gtx 580?

So serious question from a non-PC gamer; but doesn't the PC crowd already deal with DRM routinely?

Also; I also think that if this is true; MS has done their homework on what they think will be the standard deviation with either decreased or increased sales and that other companies will follow suit.

Lastly, if true and Sony and Nintendo do not adopt the same stance, would publishers/developers prefer to give MS increased exclusive deals on either full games or DLC based off of this?

You cannot rent PC games though...

Of course the PC does this. And it's why people say "Will wait for Steam sale." There's nothing wrong with DD (it's awesome), but only if priced accordingly. Considering the monopoly MS and Sony have with consoles, is this going to happen? Are they going to routinely have slash and burn sales? Is there going to be a GMG equivalent that allows you to pre-order most games at almost half off? It's reasonable to be skeptical of this.

On PC you always have a choice. For every Diablo III that tries to enforce always-on DRM, you have a Torchlight 2 that says "yeah, f that". Hell, there are stores that only carry DRM-free games! (gog.com)

[hyperbole]If Microsoft go ahead with this always on thing and both Sony and Microsoft run with second-hand game lockouts, Nintendo will have won next-gen by default.[/hyperbole]

Quick question - do the publishers of books, CDs, DVDs and Blu Rays get a percentage of second hand sales from places like Amazon, CeX etc? I was under the impression that they didn't.

If they don't, what makes games publishers think they are entitled to extra money from second hand sales?

If this is true, I guess I'll skip the new Xbox, even if I wanted to buy it (I'm very happy with my 360). But always online and no second-hand games? LOL no

My previous comment was regarding developers preferring Orbis over Durango.

Just read the last few pages and people are already defending the anti-used game feature. Really disappointed.

The more I think about it, the more insulted I feel. It is like they are treating consumers who buy/have bought used games as pirates.

You bought a used copy of Torchlight?

If anyone thinks for a moment that Sony will not be following suit (provided XB3 really does allow people to not play second hand games) then he/she may be setting him/herself for disappointment. I think this comes courtesy of third parties negotiating with both the manufacturers to root out the second hand business much like it is with the PC platform.

This could mean earlier fall in game prices. And while it is unfortunate, I'd rather my money go to publishers. But the always online part is the one that I am shaking my head at in disbelief.

This can't be true.

It would mean suicide for Microsoft. It's just too easy for Sony then. They'll just announce that they'll allow for offline gaming and Microsoft is doomed.

Nah, this can't be true.

In two countries. And it hasn't held that position very long either.
And the 360 lead has nothing on the PS2 lead. I was convinced Sony could almost literally throw shit on a platter and sell it to everyone, but that wasn't the case this gen at all, even in the markets they did win they weren't ahead of the Wii IIRC. So it's very plausible that the mainstream gets inconvinenced, or they throw an absurd price tag on top, and have everything completely ruined.
Why do people keep saying, "I hope Sony doesn't do this," "Sony better not do this." but these rumours are about the Xbox? If M$ does this, then obviously Sony is gonna make sure not to do it so they can cater to the fans.
There's been rumors for a long time about Sony blocking out used games, with the patents to back it up. Someone actually taking that step could embolden them.

And the more I think about it, I think the always online may be a bigger deal breaker for me. It almost seems like a digital switch over is all but inevitable, but you don't necessarily need to STAY online for that as iDevices readily show, even Steam has an offline mode or at least won't flip out if the connection's lost. Here, it's just overkill or an absurd fear of piracy when XBL as it is now should be enough to deter most people.

You see where the loss is occurring? None of that goes to the game creators

The game creators got their fair cut the moment they sold the copy of the game to the retailer and the first buyer paid retail price for it.

That first buyer covered the creator's share, whether he keeps the game himself forever or whether he sells it on to someone else. The creator was paid for one copy of the game. How many hands it passes through during its lifetime is completely irrelevant.

I see a lot of people are saying pc does this already with steam and origin, well the big difference for me is the pricing structure, ms and Sony seem to charge ridiculous amounts for digital downloads, where as £30 is the norm for a brand new pc game.

If the games were to be priced £30 brand new on the next Xbox/ps, then fine. Just don't try and charge me £50.

Kind of hope it happens because I want to see what the next excuse for game sales plummeting would be and because it would bring an industry crash and reset.

We play at a local restaurant every other week. They have spotty wifi. If we have a gathering at a friend's and bring several consoles, it's pretty annoying setting up an internet connection for everything just to play a game.

I'll just skip if true.

Spotty WiFi is a surprisingly pervasive problem. I know I've always had a problem with it (from living in extremely-rural areas to living in old buildings with ancient wiring).

And what about the people with DATA CAPS, god forbid? Good luck keeping your console online 24/7 when you have a 20 GB / per month cap to deal with.

I'm still skeptical that they'd do such a thing, but MS has been replaced by a bunch of money eating whores.

I certainly hope it isn't for the industries sake.

Doing away with used games won't suddenly make me have the money to buy all games new, it will just mean I buy way less games each year...
