EDGE: The next Xbox: Always online, no second-hand games, 50GB Blu-ray and new kinect

LOL

Sony and Microsoft are both said to be doing this.

Are every one of you people going PC (no used games) and/or WiiU?

LOL
didn't you just say this a bunch of pages ago? Nothing is confirmed for Sony, they've only researched it, just like they research a lot of ridiculous things that never happen. But if it were to happen, it's not even the only bad thing written in this article. Always online/region locking are worse imo.

Also why would this make anyone want to get a wiiU? On Durango you might not be able to play used games, on wiiU you won't be able to as well because there won't be any games :p

For the new page...

People seem to be forgetting that this isn't the first time this has been reported.

I've heard from one reliable industry source that Microsoft intends to incorporate some sort of anti-used game system as part of their so-called Xbox 720.

Jan 25, 2012 - http://kotaku.com/5879202/sources-t...t-play-used-games-and-will-introduce-kinect-2

[UPDATE: A Microsoft rep e-mailed me the following statement: "As an innovator we're always thinking about what is next and how we can push the boundaries of technology like we did with Kinect. We believe the key to extending the lifespan of a console is not just about the console hardware, but about the games and entertainment experiences being delivered to consumers. Beyond that we don't comment on rumors or speculation."]

This sounds insane to me. Are they actually willing to go into a war with the traditional retailers?

You could say that this only affects Gamestop, but I see it as a way to make the value of retailer games the same as online games. And if they also have online sales as many of you are suggesting then it would be a punch in the face to the whole retailer games business. It seems like suicide for the industry. How much will the holiday sales shrink without stacks of consoles(why sell them, when the margin is tiny and game sales will be low) and games at Walmart, Target, Best Buy and Gamestop. People will be downtown shopping without seeing posters for the NEW MEGA AWESOME GAME OF THE CENTURY SHOOTER 5111.

If they "go to war" with retailers who are selling used games, they have a ton of soldiers fighting alongside them in the form of development houses and publishers. There will be nothing to stop retailers like Best Buy/Amazon etc to sell new copies of games. If Microsoft is doing this, it's pretty much a given that Sony is as well. And I doubt either will do it without also giving the third parties the direct ability to modify e-store pricing as they wish.

This isn't a denial or confirmation. This is Microsoft sticking to whatever release plan they created long ago. They've gotta be pretty confident in their plan.

What if both the consoles do the same thing? PC Gaming would EXPLODE this fall.

and then everyone finds out the premiere PC games distrubution platform, Steam, has been pulling the same damn shit for years. PC gaming won't be in a better position than consoles in respect to this until devs stop relying on steam, which is basically just an always-online DRM client that no seems to notice.

The fallout from this news is so crazy it makes the stalwarts of reason fire shots, goddamn Alberto.

It is pretty interesting. Gamestop's stock is falling, and Microsoft is staying quiet. You would think the suits at Gamestop would be like "Hey Microsoft, we are losing $$$ because people think our Used Game Sales are going to be gutted. Save Us! Help Us! Tell us this isn't true!"

If this weren't true, I would expect someone to at least say something.

Come on. If it was indeed a smear campaign from a competitor Microsoft would instantly debunk it. Unequivocally, with no space for misinterpretation or ambiguity.

I don't see any company instantly and unequivocally denying a rumor about a console that has yet to be announced, in effect damaging its highly-planned (and likely very expensive) reveal planned for this spring.

If both of them pull this crap then I'm going PC+WiiU+handheld exclusive. I could stomach it on PC because I'm not forced to pay $60 (probably $70 for next-gen) for every game.

Do you guys really believe the 'Always on-DMR'? I really can't believe it coming from the same company that didn't allow having texture pack downloads on a second disk, like Halo 4 and BF3 have now, because not every Xbox has a HDD. Also, I don't really know the numbers but wouldn't MS lose quite a big chunk of their potential costumers because even now quite some people don't have their Xbox connected to the internet?

I don't think you understand the ramifications of these announcements. Once people figure out that they will have to buy games full price ALL THE TIME, why would yr average consumer want to buy that console?

Microsoft and possibly Sony will lose a huge share in the market. There will be those people that will not buy these consoles because of these consumer constricting policies. The obvious choice is buying a PC or going nintendo. A resurgence in nintendo popularity will cause an influx of core games to nintendo.

it makes sense to me.

If we don't see a Major Nelson denial of this story at some point today, it's true. Microsoft would not allow this to linger for that long.

However, if Microsoft is doing this, I'm kind of inclined to believe Sony is doing it too, because I just can't imagine Microsoft would do this unless Sony was also doing it.

If Microsoft does this, and Sony doesn't............good luck Microsoft. lol

I don't think we'll see Sony do it. After all, they didn't do it with the Vita and that just launched a little over a year ago now.

This is good. Making the choice even easier. I was leaning towards PS4 anyway since i prefer sonys first and 2nd party devs, and with this extra burden on 720.. i dont see why i would ever consider it.

A rumor convinced you, did it? The very same rumor that was linked to Sony mere months ago.

So if the next xbox has this but ps4 doesn't...does ps4 win next gen?

If both have it, do gamers move to pc? I'd love to see more pc only games so it could be a good thing. Ultimately the consumer is what keeps these companies in business. If the consumers dry up they are done.

I think people are kidding themselves if they think this will have a big enough impact to cause a resurgence of the core on a nintendo console. I'm strictly talking about used games here. I think always online is potentially detrimental.

I'm saying most people won't care outside of hobby forums. I'm also saying everything is unconfirmed, for Durango and DEFINITELY unconfirmed for Orbis.

at least steam screws me over for less money.

does this mean you wouldn't be able to bring your games over to a friend's house? or is it most likely that you'd be able to sign into your Live account at a friend's house to play your disc games?

Full price all of the time? You're still going to see discounts at retail, just as we do now. Games are often half their price in 4 months these days.

They would win for me. This always online bullshit has gone too far.

dont believe it until i see it. It makes no sense, the technology wouldnt work unless..because if your system was defective you would get a new one and then you couldnt play your games on it.

Regarding the always on line bit...MS knows there metric well. They know there lifetime customer value, the live subs/activity/DLC/etc to sales ratios and other key metrics. Its fairly easy for them to determine the impact of "always online". My guess that the numbers show that after a certain point and period of lapsed time the lose to their customer base and income will be negligble in relation the return and advantages of forcing customers online.

I have no intention of abandoning Sony's platform. Truth be told I'm very upset at the whole constraint against used games, not because it will alter my purchasing habits, but because my family owns multiple consoles at a time and we generally switch them around quite a bit within a generation. I also borrow and lend games to my friends from time to time, so I will have to change these practices a bit with the PS4.

What does hurt is the "always online" concept that just popped up. I am a person who travels a lot and I don't have a stable connection everywhere I go. This is a serious deal breaker for me. MS's consoles have been my least consoles for two generations straight and if any of these rumors hold true I will honestly stop supporting them. No matter how good the tech will be.

Sounds like they're going the steam/pc route.

On PC, right now, if we buy a game, it usually comes with a steam or shudder origin key, you activate it online, you have almost no use for the disc, and you can't sell your game.

It just sounds like they're moving away from standardized console practice, and I imagine that'll work out just fine, if it happens. Seems like it could.

There is some crazy amount of denial going on in this thread. Reminds me of the "WiiU is two - five times stronger then the 360" crowd.
