Elite Dangerous: Horizons |OT| Just scratching the surface

Scrounged through a dozen-plus wrecks and wake signals for that level 5 FSD upgrade from Farseer. So, so worth it. She was already my favourite ship so far, and now she has a nigh-peerless wingspan.

Feeling great about my first engineer experience, even if I played way too much today.

What's the highest Jump Range possible? Saving up for one now to get my Cobra to over 20.

My Asp will jump 54lys on a full tank, 55.6 near empty. Anaconda's can do better than that though, I know one guy who's Anaconda can jump 57lys in exploration trim, more if he really strips it down.

Ooooh, just jumped into my first White Dwarf system (Type DAZ, LHS 235)

"Pretty, very pretty, ouch ... OUCH... OH SHIT!"

It went something like that ^^, I didn't even think I'd got that close!

I wasn't expecting to see massive jets coming from a white dwarf though, unless it was freaky lensflare?

How'd you manage that?! Using ship builder I can't get anywhere near those jump sizes.

Yeah white dwarfs and neutron stars have those crazy gravitational/magnetic? energy jets. Fly through the jet for a certain duration and your FSD gets boosted. Worthless on white dwarfs but neutrons give a bigger boost. Also pretty useless unless you're using it to get to an inaccessible area otherwise. Explorers set up neutron highways from the bubble out to multiple areas.

Haha I didn't even get time to think about using the jets like that, it was "All hands on deck we're fucking dying right now! Let's GTFO!, Oh sweet mother of mercy!" :D

I'll try and stay calm and use them next time, without getting quite so close :p

Man it was glorious in beta. It was a 200% or more boost to your FSD range. Felt amazing to take a big lumbering combat ship to one and jump across the bubble with it. Would have made for a player hotspot too at certain locations. Alas the "Muh immershun" whiners and FD ruined it.

My FSD is modded to 54% by the engineers, so that combined with a very low mass build gives her the range. I also fly with a half sized fuel tank so that the galaxy map plotter uses the highest jump range possible to compute with. Here is how I have my ship set up:

She's done very well for me out in the deep of space. :)

Here's the footage of the deeper blacks with EDFX & VibranceGUI

I should have done a comparison to Vibrance off, but here's how it looks with it on for me:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=A_8sB9dvr7U
That looks great. Wonder how that'd fare with the Oculus Rift (still the DK2 in my case). Blacks tend to create weird ghosting effects :/

Edit:

I'm still stuck with my Cobra Mk III. I wanna get some extra cash to hopefully upgrade to another ship sometime down the line (still haven't decided). Is the stuff linked earlier a good all-purpose build?
I used to do space trucking but sorta got tired of it. These days, what's a nice way of getting cash that isn't too boring? (ie, just doing tons of jumps and no real action at all). Also I'm interested in Passenger ships (I know, it's probably boring AF, but the cash I saw was pretty good?). I'm not good at fighting, or haven't really tried much, but I might eventually get a cheaper ship just to fight around when in the mood.

Was that added in an update or something? I tend to only jump in once or twice a year for a bit so I'm guessing I missed an update or two.

Yes. 2.1 "The Engineers", around June last year. Brought the engineers, which require Horizons as they're all on planet surfaces and the persistent NPCs with faces.

It's ridiculous to me that there's no in game HUD editor. That seems like basic stuff. They probably argued for too long about how they could monetize it and then when the community made tools they just said fuck it.

yea probably.

almost finished G5 engineering my 22nd ship. feelsgoodman.

having a bit of paralysis of analysis trying to decide between some variant of bursts or something else for my fdl.

Seeing as the next monetization is probably going to be engine colors (there's a binding for it in the controls...), not an unlikely scenario.

In any case, it seems pretty ridiculous that there is still no official support for changing HUD colors. You really have to wonder how complicated they've made the HUD colors when the NPC faces get screwed up completely, unless you use one of the few combinations that work. Even then, because everything seems to depend on the HUD color configuration, even things like the "blue throttle bar" and the radar are screwed up by the colors. Even when a combination looks really good on panels and works with NPC faces, it may utterly lack contrast and deceivable colors to read the radar etc..

You can make any colour set work really, you just have to use an additive color mixing approach rather than stripping away everything until you get what you want.

Short rundown of how to go about it?

I'm using tested "presets" that work. But from my experience, it screws up the contrast at least somewhere in the HUD.

I really like this game, but my biggest issue is that there is just too much that I can do, I seem to always have "rabbit in headlights" problems, I just sit there looking at the screen thinking, what shall I do next.

The universe is so vast, so many planets, so many stations, and so many ways to earn credits, I just find it all a bit overwhelming, it's a shame it's not streamlined a little, I don't get a huge amount of time to play games, and this game just seems to suck up time like a huge black hole.

And that's what even considering the whole hornets nest that is power play!

Make sure every column for R G B has a full 100 value in one of the spots and color mix from there (wiki is a great dirty reference). In my own hud (http://arkku.com/elite/hud_editor/#theme_1_0.1_0.2_0.5_0_0.5_0_1_1), I left the full values of Red and Blue in their original cells, and moved green-green to green-blue. All the rest was additions to mix the colors into my desired pink, blue, and purple. No dimming of NPC avatars and I retained a realistic skin tone! Add, don't subtract.

My tip for using the HUD editor, and not screwing up your colors/contrast is to make sure the color for the header text element / trader rank graphic stays white (Where it says "XIHE Biomorphic Companions"), and just edit the other two UI element colors.

Here's mine, a slightly edited version of EDFX's Interstellar HUD option, slightly less green in the blue UI components, it's very easy on the eyes and complements the Cobra's switch texture colors quite nicely:

Thanks, will try to "fix" mine. It's a preset taken from the Elite forums, but the contrast colors in the HUD are horrible in some scenarios (especially near a sun), while the faces do work excellently.

Can we mandate posting your overrides xml whenever posting your hud colors? ;)

Doh!, I actually included them, then edited it out when sorting out the double post issue :p

Here's mine:

Code:
<MatrixRed> 0.1, 0.3, 0.7 </MatrixRed>
<MatrixGreen> 0, 1, 0 </MatrixGreen>
<MatrixBlue> 1, 0, 0 </MatrixBlue>

Osiris, I think that's the best example of HUD colour modification I've seen. When I next dip into the game I'll be using those values, cheers.

To be followed closely by commander space suits, hats, capes, helmets, hair styles, tattoos, etc, all to be used with the new 2.3 commander creator.

"The Courier is awesome!" They said, until I saw the hardpoint placements. At least I can use it as the galaxy's fanciest wake scanner.

No commodities has made it much more realistic. if we still had to farm Articulation Motors or anything else that requires cargo space, I wouldn't have bothered past my 5th ship.

I just wish the data limits were per item, the data grind isn't too bad otherwise.

I can relate. Felt this way at first as well. Even when I decided that I really liked this game, my concern moved to this being the only game I play as my time to game is limited. Eventually I said screw it. If I'm enjoying this as much as I am, my backlog can wait.

You will be proven right I think. Still, I don't mind that bit of monetization as it has no consequences on game balance whatsoever. But they really ought to do something about the godawful debug camera and give some more means of looking at your ship when selling virtual paintjobs. Every other vehicle based online game (War Thunder, WoT, WoWarships...) knows how a proper hangar screen is done that lets you goggle at your vehicles. Only Elite is incapable of providing to do a good hangar screen...

The only thing I regret about all the microtransactions, is that they mean there won't be any ingame means of aquiring cosmetics. E.g. special skins and decals dealt out by factions whom you're allied with etc.. Those would work directly against their microtransactions and are therefore probably out of question.

I´m enjoying ED a lot by playing in short bursts (about two/three 50/150k trading missions per day).

Yesterday I stepped into an out-of-my-league conflict zone; I barely escaped, but my Cobra MK III was left with the dreaded "zero thrust capability". I restarted the game, the console, and several of the ship´s systems before finally reaching the nearest dock to repair and refuel. I felt like Han Solo during the hyperdrive failure: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=X-rkFaIPyL4

Eventually, I made a 145-ly travel to Perun to participate in the community goals. I believe I will have to switch from Alliance to Federation...

I some how missed the announcement that this game is coming out for PS4/Pro in Q2. I have been meaning to jump into this game for a while now. However, I also got a Gtx 1060 recently so I am tempted to just get it on PC now and play it there. So these are my main considerations.

-I have no flight stick on PC, so it would likely be a combo of mouse and keyboard and using a DS4 controller
-I have no friends on PC that I would be able to play with
-I have maybe one or two friends I could convince to pick it up on PS4

So, is there of fun or dynamics to be had when playing co-op? Co-op gaming is my favorite thing to do these days so can you run missions side by side or is it more doing your own thing and contributing to shared goals?

If co op is more about being in a faction I think I would go PC and just team up on GAF. If you can actually complete missions together like be an escort for a friend who is a cargo hauler, it would be worth the wait on PS4 and getting a friend to play with.

Coop is utterly underdevelopped, but fun can still be had. Don't expect entertainment on the level of a campaign game designed for coop though.

For starters: Missions do not explicitely support coop and only usually benefit the one person completing it, even if they're in a wing (formal grouping of up to four players). With few exceptions: massacre missions are better done in groups, because anybody could pick up some and you'd help each other speed up progression.

What changes multicrew brings remains to be seen. Trust Fdev to bungle at least some, if not all aspects of it though. Wouldn't be an immiursive sumulation, if not each of you had to spend upwards of 20 minutes staring at loading screens, just because you want to meet up for a quick multicrew romp, would it? ;-) And if Fdev proposes a good, non intrusive design for crewing up, trust the community to pressure it into overcumbersome game design wasteland by whining and Fdev complying due to not having the game design spine to defend something sensible in the face pretend-immersion acolytes on their forums and reddit.

At least one person seems to have realized the idiocy postmortem, unless that's just a troll.

I wish the ship kits parts showed up on the hologram ship on the dashboard. I mean obviously other players know how cool my ship looks but it'd be nice for me to see it too.

Same with enemy ships. Imagine getting ready to interdict someone only to see their Vulture has a huge spoiler on the back, you'd think twice before pulling them out of supercruise.

What’s hilarious is that the same dev said this just a few days ago, amongst countless pleas from players claiming it was bugged in solo:

QA-Mitch said:
But I can confirm that it has been thoroughly tested and is working as intended.

I'll pass on your concerns.

So I guess “thoroughly tested” really wasn’t very thorough at all now, was it?

Frontier has some of the best art and sound devs in the game, but their huge QA problems really dampen it all, every single update. Every. Single. Update. I wish they would get a handle on it.

Mine is very similar excepting that I have two HSLs (because I don't trust myself to not afk into a star/might jump into 2 stars) and 2 SRVs (because I don't trust myself not to lose one afk/drive one off a cliff on a high grav world). Also wake scanner because you never know.

As a side note, fixed cannons are categorically better than fixed MCs on the FDL now. Like unmodified cannons put out more downrange DPS against typical bounty targets than G5 overdrive MCs do. This is the fit I'm running now. Huge MC because still want corrosive, also huge MC is less multicannon more minicannon, and is still generally efficient damage/round, also saves ammo on those 5% hull left shots.

Thanks for the response. I might just grab it on PC if the co op is that lacking.
