Eurogamer: New Pokémon Snap sold nearly triple the boxed copies of Returnal

A brand name for decades outperforms a new game without any legacy.

What kind of weird flex is this?

80 million Switches in wild, 8 million PS5s.
humongous well established IP vs brand new IP
Game which caters to mass market vs a AAA rogue-lite

Hmmmm, I wonder how this happened......

Isn't Pokemon a well know brand for decades? And Vs a totally new IP? Are they even comparable?

Seriously, I can't say nowadays if its console warring or not anymore.

Hummm... that is bad for Pokémon?

I mean I expect any Pokémon game to sell at least 10x more than Returnal.

You mean one of the most popular franchises of all time on a system with 100x as many users sold more than a new IP on a system no one can find? Fuck get them a raise for this crackerjack reporting. Thank you for sharing!!!

but what if returnal sold 3.333333334 times more copies than you expected?
Well hard to believe after the Chris tweet about physical sales (below expectations) but hey anything can happen.

BTW the Eurogamer article come from the same source... so it looks like Snap underperformed in UK.

I suspect GameFreak has some superpower that created Pokemon IP last forever.
People keep returning to Pokemon generation after generation even with a different type of games.

I'd say it seems pretty solid for a brand new IP with 1/10 of the install base, but i guess the glass is always half empty for some folks

Very successful? The original Snap barely passed 1 million units sold and it came out in the previous century lmao.
What... it sold over 1.5 million only in US NPD 1999.
And it launched in September.

Edit - Fixed the years lol... typed 2009 when it was 1999... N64 game.

Bizarre comparison. But I'll allow it. It reminds me of the broader picture outside of forums like this. A game few were even talking about on here is dominating on a system not in a console war. It's a dose of reality.

Snap ISN'T a very successful Pokemon spinoff. Stadium was a very successful Pokemon spinoff. Snap was a Pokemon spinoff that again launched in 1999. New Snap should be compared to Pokémon Mystery Dungeon and not to Sword/Shield.
Weird because Snap outsold both Stadium and Stadium 2 but a good margin.
It just sold less than Stadium 3.

BTW I wonder why even publications today write that:

"Surprisingly, Pokémon Snap was a huge success. Technically a unique kind of rail-shooter, players must make their way across seven stages and take their best shots of the wildlife to earn points and claim a high score. There are also puzzle elements hidden throughout each stage. Similar to last year's excellent Bugsnax, not every one of these creatures will want to pose for your camera. You might have to toss apples or provoke another creature to get them out of hiding. Its biggest weakness is its length, though, as most veteran players can beat it in under an hour."

The most successful Pokémon spinoff is Go.

Ohhhh I misplace Stadium 2 and 3.
So Snap sold more than 1 and 3 and less than 2.

That was my point.

BTW even today it is considered one of the best (if not the best) Pokémon spin-off.
It not hard to find fans playing it even today.

Would be better if they compared it to the other Pokémon games on switch, not Returnal which is literally supply constrained. I can't find a copy within 50 miles, seems as though Sony was too conservative on this one.

... It's Pokemon

It sells even when the game is shit like Sword and Shield

Even when Game Freak put minimun effort for years
If the game is anything like the original then it is pretty good.
But yes Pokémon name alone sells it.

And I agree with those people. I was being funny because outselling a new IP is hardly anything worth notice for any game that brands the Pokémon name. However, sales expectations for Snap should NOT be set as if it was a mainline Pokémon title and that needs to be just as obvious as the fact that Snap outselling Returnal was a given. It needs to be compared with previous spin off titles, like the ones in the link I posted.

Four times bigger than the N64 version in UK
