Eurogamer: New Pokémon Snap sold nearly triple the boxed copies of Returnal

No matter how good it might be Returnal style games are a bit niche. Add to that hardware shortages and, well, how can anyone draw any firm conclusions from physical sales in a case like this?

What is wrong with the title? The title matches the GDC 2021 Survey results.
Because that title was made to invite console war. A correct title would have been "PC is the preferred platform for developers." Instead of "PS5 is the preferred console for developers" there's a difference. And the difference being that it was disingenuous as hell for the purpose of console warring.

Pokemon is the single largest entertainment property. It's on a console with 10x the player base currently.

WTF is Anpanman?

I dont know you guys compare Xbox sales knowing PS and PC has 3 times the user base. Don't diminish Nintendo now...
BTW sales dont mean crap to me. Just pointing out the hypocrisy.

This makes me think that Returnal is actually doing very well and must be exceeding Sony's expectations.
  • Established IP (Pokemon) vs. New IP (Returnal)
  • 80 million Switch consoles vs. 8 million PS5. (10x difference)
  • $45 MSRP vs. $70 MSRP.
  • Returnal is facing a shortage of physical copies in most stores and in most regions. Digital sales are expected to be much higher. Besides, Sony led digital sales with 61% last quarter.
Despite all that, the revenue for Pokemon is only 2x higher, and units sold is only 3x higher. I'd say Returnal is doing great. I hope it does, and Sony releases official numbers.

Dude stop this. Even a pile of shit with Pokémon name on it will sell like hot cakes. Don't pretend like pokemon released it's first game yesterday, also it is the most successful franchise ever made on our planet https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_highest-grossing_media_franchises

Oh but I forgot, you are a Nintendo fanboy.

That's right, I'm used to the stuff I like being hugely popular. It's a fair reward for Nintendo being on the vanguard of the industry for over 36 years now. Craft results in exaltation.

I havent never bought a disc since PS3. Everyone I know hasnt bought one since PS4.

I buy all my Switch games physical. Be it I dont even touch my switch. So maybe im a horrible example. I still have most of my switch stuff boxed up. One day.

Very strange comparisson.. Of course a new Pokemon game will sell more than a new IP on a system with 10x less users..

It is UK and we already knew physical sales for Returnal is below expectations there.

Not surprising whatsoever and if anything, completely expected. Pokemon will go over 10m easily if it hasn't already while Returnal will probably be at around the 2m (25%) or so mark which isn't bad all things considered.

You doesn't know tha
uhm no? i think that I exactly do.
The game will sell well digitally (compared to the userbase) to users (hardcore) who bought the ps5 to try next-gen games the big market is skipping titles over 70 euros the same goes for Demons souls ... in most stores in Italy both cost 80.99 euros. at least that's how it is going in Italy

I couldn't understand that thread either. The guy said it's below expectations (no numbers), but then boxed copies are sold out everywhere (hence, the shortage). Doesn't that mean that discs sold more than what Sony expected and printed?

This sounds like something you'd want to rub in Michael Pachter's face.

Glad for Pokémon, but this is really not surprising.

Very successful? The original Snap barely passed 1 million units sold and it came out in the previous century lmao.
It sold more then 1,5 milioni copies and It rank as 11th best selling game on Nintendo 64, a console with barely a fraction of the installed base of the Switch at a time when rentals where a thing. I agree that this must considered quite successfull for a simple spin off

It's actually impressive that Returnal (a new IP) sold 1/3rd the number of copies of Pokémon Snap (one of the most popular IPs in existence) on a platform with 1/10th of the install base.

Also I believe the digital physical split is more skewed towards physical on Switch than PS5, due to the storage space issue, so that's again quite impressive for Returnal to put up those numbers in physical sales.

Yeah, that's what I said. I was a little skeptical before, but this data leads me to believe that Returnal may in fact be killing it.

There is other evidence as well, e.g., Returnal was at the top of Amazon's best-seller, excellent reviews and word of mouth, disks are pretty much sold out in most regions and stores, showing excellent demand.

We may all be in for a surprise.
