Eurogamer: New Pokémon Snap sold nearly triple the boxed copies of Returnal

So what are they saying? I mean the dumbest person could have told you a massive IP like Pokemon would vastly outsell a niche game like Returnal. Even the legendary Michael Pachter could have foretold you this useless bit of info.
i was talk in general ....is not about the game...is about the price. 80.99 euro is a lots in a country where the average salary after tax is 1550 monthly ...(+ or - this average salary applies to Italy and England)

The game costs an arm and a leg in europe. Not sure what anyone expected.

I'd be more interested in Sonys expectations of the game. It could still meet them even though it sells like crap compared to other releases. All they need to do is offset the losses from price sensitive people with the 10-20€ increase which seems like a tall order to be honest.

So succesful it didn't get a sequel made in over 20 years
And?

It was a critic and sales success (a game o Nintendo 64 that sells 1.5m in 3 months on NPD) plus cult even today by fans.
That is exactly why it was launched on Virtual Console and now is having a sequel.

I couldn't understand that thread either. The guy said it's below expectations (no numbers), but then boxed copies are sold out everywhere (hence, the shortage). Doesn't that mean that discs sold more than what Sony expected and printed?
Well the only way I find to explain him is that he is talking about Gaming Industry own internal expectations... no Sony :pie_thinking:

Hummm... that is bad for Pokémon?

I mean I expect any Pokémon game to sell at least 10x more than Returnal.
This.

Yes. I think those new PS5 prices are bad for the gamers and the industry but unfortunately Returnal is a success for Sony so it's the worse game to use if you want to argue against those prices.

I think internally Sony is going to use that game to promote their new AAA strategy. Summary: "If the game is a >85 metacritic then it will be a commercial success" -> "firing <80 metacritic developers is a good strategy, let's keep doing it".

€79 in Europe is ridiculous, and I don't think it's supply constrained at least here, took this pic myself:

uhm no? i think that I exactly do.
The game will sell well digitally (compared to the userbase) to users (hardcore) who bought the ps5 to try next-gen games the big market is skipping titles over 70 euros the same goes for Demons souls ... in most stores in Italy both cost 80.99 euros. at least that's how it is going in Italy.
You start by contradicting yourself there saying "it will sell well digitally". Then you give all reasons for why Returnal won't sell well to the "big market" and your data is your appreciation by browsing around in "Italy". What do you know how well Demon's Souls is doing? You don't see it chart among the big third party, multiplat games and ever-selling Switch games and you conclude is not selling well. You don't know shit to be making generalizations, bambino.

No shit, the most popular IP on the planet outsold a brand new totally original game?

Pokemon is more popular than Mickey Mouse or Star Wars.

Why is this even news?

A nostalgia fueled release from the biggest media franchise in the world on a console with a much bigger install base sold more than a new IP on Ps5?

NO. FUCKING. WAY!!!!!!

stress i need a drink GIF

It's the first PS5 exclusive to get into the TrueTrophies top 20. Maybe it's doing very well digitally and/or among the hardcore PS gamers. (For reference, DS or MLB never charted)

Is that from UK?

Because there is a lot of reports plus you can check online stores that have the physical version sold out.

It sold more then 1,5 milioni copies and It rank as 11th best selling game on Nintendo 64, a console with barely a fraction of the installed base of the Switch at a time when rentals where a thing. I agree that this must considered quite successfull for a simple spin off

Yeah my bad, I should have researched this a bit better before I replied. Still, the point stands, Snap still is a spinoff and the barrier for success is not mainline Pokémon, but spinoff Pokémon.

A brand new ip exclusive to a console that you can't buy is outsold by a pokemon game on a system with at least ten times the install base? Oh, noes! Who would have thought? lmao.

A game from one of the most popular IPs, ever, released on a platform with an 80+ million install base sells more than a game from a new IP released for an 8 million install base platform.

schocking....
If I needed a reminder why I never click on anything "Eurogamer" (I didn`t), this is it.

Who wrote that? that is a horrible article, like saying " Pixar kids movie sold 3 times better than Quintin Tarantino movie "

That's nuts. I don't know if we'll ever see a phenomenon like Pokemon.

It makes me mad whoever is behind Pokemon games keep shitting the bed that much though...

Indeed. I wish they do care more about the franchise. Sucks seeing they trash the game after and after.

eG can't let Sony enjoy launching a new ip without scrapping the bottom of a barrel.

Where were the comparisons to every Microsoft first party game that flopped?

This is possibly the saddest take I've read in a while. So the first sequel in decades of a beloved Pokemon spinoff game, which is also an exclusive for a system which 10x the install base than the PS5, sold more than a new IP for the PS5? No shit. Returnal literally cannot sell more than Snap, there are not enough PS5s in the market.
